What color is bird crap?

Default What do I do with this car? Advice please!

Hi all, I have a 2002 WRX wagon, I've had over 15 years / 165k miles. I love it, but I no longer have the money or time to keep it up, and it has fallen into some serious disrepair.

It still runs really strong, but I'm looking for a good faith idea of what you all might think it's worth in its current state. If I were a service writer, I'd put it like this:

Cust states
- oil leak, burning oil smell
- manual trans hard to shift into 1st, 2nd
- brakes make a metal grinding sound
- power steering makes a whirring/buzzing sound
- clunk/creak in suspension over bumps
- steering shakes on the freeway over 55mph

Of course, there is all the other miscellaneous wear and tear from a nearly 20 year old car, that sadly has never been able to be garage kept.

Basically, would this be worth the effort to try and recoup some money for, given that it is a rare-ish cult car with no wrecks? Or should I dump it for peanuts/donate it?

They all could be easy fixes or larger issues TBH. Pics and how much for it

since I also have a 2002 wrx, I've experienced and repaired all these issues.

- oil leak, burning oil smell
likely valve cover gaskets dripping oil on exhaust, not terribly expensive and cheaper if you can do yourself

- manual trans hard to shift into 1st, 2nd
this likely needs a transmission rebuild/replacement, guessing $3-4k

- brakes make a metal grinding sound
pads and rotors, easy job

- power steering makes a whirring/buzzing sound
maybe low on fluid, or needs new pump. relatively simple

- clunk/creak in suspension over bumps
assuming oem suspension, likely needs new struts & mounts

- steering shakes on the freeway over 55mph
wheel balance, alignment, steering rack

without seeing photos of condition of paint/interior, based on year & mileage it's probably worth $2.5-3k maybe?

Thank you for your thoughts. I was headed for $3k on the high end so this is encouraging! I'll likely list at $4k to start with the expectation it will come down fair bit.

Constantinus, yeah, those are my guesses, except the oil leak is confirmed to be on top of the engine, so it's pooling on top of the block and burning from there. Anyway the idea is hopefully someone will take it as a beloved project since I don't have the time/money anymore, and also lost garage access. D:

Here is a pic as requested, tho of course as per forum rules this is not a for-sale post. I'll put that in the proper place.

Not clear in the pic but the roof and hood are badly sun-cancer'ed. Interior is dirty but in otherwise good condition.

You can get 3k for this on Craigslist pretty easily. You are right to start at 4k though. People on CL seem to think they need to get some kind of discount in order to buy

A bugeye with zero rust is worth a lot more $$$ if you can find someone from the rust belt who's looking for one, even one that needs work.

Thanks again for the advice, everybody! I'm squaring up a bunch of personal/family stuff at the moment, then I can tidy up and take pics of the car and I'll post it up soon on the NASIOC FS board. If no one bites there, CraigsList is the backup.

Cheers!! Y'all the best!
