Drove with the new HPGO for a week and 3rd gear is still grinding when I upshift from 2nd. No issues when downshifting from 4th to 3rd gear, though. Is my 3rd gear synchronizer busted? No other issues with drivability other than brief grinding when upshifting from 2nd to 3rd. Is this type of issue common with the 5MT? Is the only option to drop and open up the gearbox to repair?

Mine does just a little bit of that "zip" feeling - incidentally only on the 2->3 shift as well. Uncertain of the answer on whether this means a synchro is actually dickered, or just getting a little weaker, or common/normal for the 5MT. Any warranty left on yours? FWIW, with my situation, I don't plan to have the tranny opened until it becomes an actual problem. |

To add some data points for anyone else searching.
I'm boat as you, '05 STi with ~140k miles. @ 120k I changed the transmission oil to HPGO from whatever the dealer did at 60k (I assume ExtraS). The HPGO was terrible. Lots of downshift grinding when there never previously was. Changed to Motul Gear 300... smooth as butter. I'm a believer. I'll be putting another bunch of Motul in the tranny if I still have the car at 180k. |

Adding my $.02 in...from what I read the oe fluid is made/bottled by valvoline, and so I just went with their full synthetic 75w90. That was 27ish k ago with no issues, and I drive hard and often.

With Valvoline, I know there is the option of their conventional 80w-90 HPGO at $25/gal, https://www.autozone.com/greases-and...gal/972913_0_0, or their 75w-90 full synthetic you mentioned at around $50/gal, https://www.autozone.com/greases-and...-oz/977482_0_0. I may try them all until something works rather than having to potentially repair the gearbox (last resort if it gets to the point of not being able to engage the gear) at this point of ownership. |

I drained the Subaru HPGO and replaced with Motul Gear 300 75w-90. No more grinding. I wish started using this earlier. I hope this takes care of the issue for good. |

Motul's Gear 300 75w90 is magic. Wonderful stuff. I ran it in my BRZ's 6MT and never had trouble shifting.

Tranny Fluid. Specifically Extra S Replacement. AKA Subaru High Performance Motor Oil

5,000 miles later and the grind when shifting to 3rd returns. Only at 50,000 miles but no more powertrain warranty because over 5 years. Out of ideas...may need to eventually take it to the $hop. |

I just did my first transmission oil change, filling the dipstick tube after I removed the intercooler. Now Im shopping for intercooler gaskets. I hear some cars can fill at the gearshifter location once its removed. Know if that works with subarus?

I just warm the trans lube before filling the trans. If warm and sunny out, I put the bottles on the driveway in the sun for an hour or so. If colder out, I put the bottles on top of my furnace. |

Check out the rear label of the Valvoline 80w-90 HPGO. It mentions non-synchronized transmissions. So this wouldn’t be good for the WRX 5-speed? |

Interesting...never seen that sort of specific warning... So, no, not for use in a subaru 5 speed MT. Their DuraBlend does not seem to have this warning. The info sheet for the white bottle (and also the full syn) indicates it already has LS additives, so that's no-go for synchros.

Have you tried mixing some Redline Lightweight Shockproof with your gear oil?

The Motul website shows the GL-5 rated conventional GearBox 80W-90 (https://www.motul.com/us/en-US/products/gearbox-80w90) as one of the options for the 5MT in my WRX, so I drained out the Gear 300 75W-90 and replaced with 3L of the GearBox 80W-90. This stuff is milky black (Moly?) and thicker than any other gear oil I tried. It's marketed as Moly reinforced for "noisy" transmissions, so I'll try this stuff for awhile and report back if it helps... |

Dyson Analysis helped me out a lot with picking oils for my car. Could probably come out ahead financially sending a sample to him and buying his recommendation, vs buying 6 quarts of motul gear 300...

Any thoughts on the first marketing point of the Lightweight Shockproof? “Film thickness greater than an SAE 75W140, yet low fluid friction like 80W gear oil or 30W motor oil. “ Anyone try using a GL-5 75w-140 gear oil for their 5MT? Maybe that’s why people get good results with the Lightweight Shockproof oil? The oil stays thicker at operating temperature which allows for more protection for the synchros? |

Drained the Motul and refilled with 3 quarts of Lightweight Shockproof. Feels the best out of all the gear oils I tried so far (Subaru HPGO, Redline 75w-90NS, Motul Gear 300 75w-90, Motul Gearbox 80w-90). Gear shifts are smooth and silent now. Will see how many miles I can get out of it. |
