I'd have a hard time buying a WRX/STI -- or any high performance car for that matter -- used.

I've read too many horror stories here on NASIOC.

Very few people buy a WRX and then drive conservatively and never get on it. Most people drive them like they stole them -- at least sometimes. Many modify them and then race or abuse them. Often, there is damage that is not obvious -- a tranny getting ready to go for example. Or internal engine damage that isn't obvious -- yet.

I think you were smart to get another engine from a reputable shop and go on down the road.

No point in thinking about what you could have done. Hindsight is 20/20.

Up here in Massachusetts there's a former master Subaru mechanic that does reman'd engines for the major Subaru dealers and shops in the area that does an insanely good job. All in total with labor, the longblock, disassembly and a new clutch (ACT HDSS) was $7300, about the quoted price for a BNIB OEM longblock.

I've put about 3k miles on the new engine so far and its held up mint.
In my situation, I was getting ready to sell the car anyway. Your $7300 quote is what I was seeing on the low end in the DC area. I ended up selling the car for a bit over $7k, vs a book value around $15k. So it was close to a wash.

If I had sold just before the engine blew I would have felt terrible for the new owner. While i'm never owning a subaru again (and have certainly spread the word to my friends and family about the situation) I just don't think newer cars are being built to last. My philosophy has been to buy used at about 2-3yrs old. Now, i'm not so sure. I've also become an EV convert. They have their own challenges, but broken connecting rods isn't one of them .

I was being pretty diligent in what I was looking at - and I thought I had a gem on my hands (Texas car, all highway miles, traded in by a girl who commuted back and forth from the oil fields in west Texas). While there were some other issues that came up before the spun bearing, these weren't with the car itself, but the dealer I bought the car from.

Overall, I knew going into it that there was going to be some maintenance and stuff that I would have to do so I knew that it was a possibility - I just didn't think that I was going to get screwed on the service contract part. I felt like I had a leg to stand on because it had been sold to me and billed as an extended warranty, not a service contract.

With that said, I'm glad that I was able to get the car that I've wanted since I was 16... now I just need to rebuild my wallet while everything settles down haha.

The funny thing is that a dealership offered to buy the car the Saturday before it spun the bearing when I stopped by to look at the 50th Anniversary Edition WRX. "I want to buy your car - what can I do to buy it off of you and get you into that one?"

I'm just glad that everything worked out in the end for me, and that my job allows for me to be able to afford all this stuff. Might make things a bit tricky at times, but some people have stamp collections, or play Magic the Gathering (ironically I used to play), I just put money into my WRX.

I'm going to end up buying another Subaru in the future and when the time comes to get my wife into a new car, she's definitely getting one because it'll be under lease lol

Problem And Likely Cause: throwing codes P2764 and P0700

Reason Given For Denial: none

Your Story: Slight shutter and engine light came on,with ABS light, oil temp and pic of traction control, I am afraid of what the dealer is going to say because I know there is an extended warranty on the trans but I have too many miles on the car. If the cost is to much, I will have to consider getting rid of the car. Between the oil consumption and this,I should of bought a Toyota!
Anybody else run into this type of problem?

Time Out Of Use: 3 weeks

Problem And Likely Cause: cylinder one bearing failure. Most likely from sitting at redline to long

Modifications: nameless turbo back exhaust and cobb ots stage 2

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): yes

Reason Given For Denial: vehicle is excessively modified which could have casued the bearing to wear, which could have caused the rod to move more, which could have caused the piston to let oil past the rings which would have burned oil causing me to be 2 quarts low.

Your Story: Driving down the highway windows down, music up and wasnt paying attention to my rpms or gear. Drove fine then on the way home starting hearing valve tick which turned into rod knock. checked oil and found it was 2 quarts low. Took it into the local dealer here and they told me it was cylinder one rod bearing failure. quoted me 13k for new everything. Ended up getting SOA involved and they tore the block down and confirmed the issue then denied the claim for the reason above. Ended up finding a used engine on here with 10k and put that in.

Your story:I was taking off under reasonable revs 3-3 1/2. I hit the throttle. When I went to 2nd it wouldn’t go into gear. I pulled over (still not going in to gear, no gear) I stopped the engine. I put it into gear and started engine. The starter motor jerked the car as if in gear and didn’t start. I left it in gear and tried again. This time the clutch engaged and the car started. There was a burnt clutch smell but not excessive. After that it has been driving fine but I haven’t “dumped” it since. I heard no noises or knocks. Do you guys think it was slipping because it was burnt?

Sell this car immediately you don’t deserve to have it.

I think its slipping because you haven't even finished breaking in the car and your pretty much launching it. For driving I never have the rpm over 2K for getting the vehicle going. I think you abused your clutch and broke it my friend.

Did you read the manual your car came with? Might be a good idea...

Based on what you said, I think you definitely have done some kind of damage. You shouldn't be attempting to "launch" the car in any way during the break in period. The unfortunate thing is that it probably will cost you a lot to have anyone check it since the only real way to know for sure if a clutch is damaged is to look at it which requires taking it off. Also, if damage has been done, you likely are on the hook for the bill since the warranty manual specifically says that clutches are not a covered item. From past experience when I was about 17, I can tell you it's blatantly obvious as well when a clutch has been abused when you actually look at the plates.

Good luck, and please start taking better care of your car :\

Default 18' STI Warranty Denial

Name: phil

Make: 18’ Sti

Mileage: 31K

Time out of use: 0

Problem and likely cause: Rod Knock

Mods: stock

Submitted for warranty: yes and denied

Your story: started car earlier this week (Monday) when i decided head out for the day. Headed out and heard a horrible noise approaching 3k rpm that faded above and below. Checked fluids and all looked good. Same noise the next day, booked into to dealer for a check, asked brother to listen. His thoughts were rod knock. Wednesday limped car to dealer...tech listened to it and said looks like you'll need a long block but we will need to do a further inspection. Today (Thursday) Mr Subaru from SOC comes out does his thing, claims engine has been modded (Dont make me go there) and indicates warranty is voided (at least these were the words of the SA)

Where do I go with this?

I bought the car with 80 kilometres on it last september, drive it to and from work and around as I play PGO. I am the only person that has driven the car since it left the lot (unless a tech took it out while in for service). I', happy with the stock STI that it is....how can they possibly claim that it is modded when it isnt?

Get a lawyer that has some experience in these things. Lawyer drafts a letter to Mr. Subaru, and see if that solves it. If not, get it fixed and file in small claims. Lawyer's letter might be all it takes.

They'll be able to tell if stock ECU has been tampered with. That's very vague though that they say "the engine is modded" I would fight with them and ask them to prove to you that the engine was indeed modded. There are telltale signs that show if an engine was modded. They likely don't want to bite the bill for a new engine.

Well further digging has brought about their claim that not the engine but that they “suspect” the ECU was modded. Now my biggest problem is getting proof that it hasn’t been or tonfind our exactly what was done to it.

As Subbie owners what’s out there that would allow us to see a complete history or changes to the ECU because of even the dealer has said that they are only able to see the current version for updating purposes and that they have no ability to dig in to the history of the ECU like Subaru Canada would when investigating

They can easily tell/prove that the ECU was tampered with. If you haven't, then you should have nothing to worry about.

If they give you trouble, I would suggest going to another dealer, and telling them about your situation.

Tried 3 other local dealers and all have refused to look at the car because Subaru Canada is involved so stuck with this dealer who absolutely refuses to budget because SC is involved.

Nothing has been done....but with SC claiming there had been the dealer now refuses to do anything whatsoever.

Default Warranty Story

Name: Jesse Collier

Make: 2014 WRX Hatchback

Mileage: 55,000

Time Out Of Use: 2 months

Problem And Likely Cause: rod bearing ruptured, lodged a rod, cracked the block--cause is ???

Modifications: cobb blow off valve

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): yes

Reason Given For Denial: "there are only two reasons that this would happen: lack of oil maintenance or over revving, and neither are covered by the factory"

Your Story: I was driving home on Father's Day (06/17) and was merging into highway traffic going somewhat fast (shifted from 3rd to 4th at around 6k). I heard a sound from the engine, shifted to fifth, and the sound went away.
I continued on down the road, heard valve tick from my engine, and tried to get off the interstate. The car shut down a few times on the way over, and by the time I was to the side, it had turned into full on rod knock.
Car was towed to the nearby dearliership, I waited two weeks to get an answer (they gave me a rental only after the first week), and they told me that the warranty repair wasn't covered for the reasons above. I asked what troubleshooting they had done, and they replied that they've only looked at the parts that the field engineer said to look at and have not troubleshot any parts of the car.

I bought the car with 45,000 miles and have changed the oil three times (45k, 50k, and 55k). The Carfax was spotless and showed an oil change every 5k miles. I had changed the oil two weeks before the incident happened--along with the air filter and brakes on the car. I verified when it happened that the car had oil.

SOA told me on 07/17 that the car's warranty was now NOT being denied, but that I would need to make a $1,600 deposit before they would look at the engine to see if it was covered. If it wasn't covered, I would be out the $1,600 and would need to pay another $13,000 to have the engine REPAIRED.

The dealership's director of services said the following, "I completely understand your position, but please understand that there is zero chance that your vehicle’s damage is going to covered by warranty or they will find anything to conclude a manufacturer’s defect was the root cause of the bearing failure, and it is only my personal opinion that you would be wasting your money on a tear down. The reason Subaru of America would participate in this endeavor and agree to pursue this further is to again, further solidify the legal case of denial of warranty coverage of this repair."

No troubleshooting has been done, and I don't want to fork out $1,600 at the chance they will deny it. What should I do?

Might be a silly question - but did you keep the oil from your last change? i.e haven't got rid of it. If you do maybe get it tested to see whats in it. Mybe it will show something that could support the claim for you.

I just gave them a credit card as requested. In 2 months they returned the car and everything was covered under warranty.

Name: Logan

Make: 2018 STI

Mileage: 6500 current

Time Out Of Use: ~25 days

Problem And Likely Cause: Transmission rebuilt at 3000 miles
Bad synchro

Modifications: None

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: Evidende of abuse or aggressive driving ( which they will not show me )

Your Story: Car started grinding on the downshifts from 6th to 5th. Took it to dealer and they told me it was normal. Took it back a second time cause it got worse and they admitted there was an issue. They pulled the trans apart and apparently subaru denied the warranty cause they said I drove it too hard. Dealership paid for it under goodwill. Handed me the box of parts and one of my gears had 12 teeth clean ripped off no ware on the sides just teeth ripped off. Currently in contact with subaru the dealership and the BBB.
They have given me such crappy service and the dealership is really coming at me cause I do not want it stated I abusively drove this car it’s my dream car. Yes I rode it a little hard ( after the break in point ) but how do 12 teeth get ripped clean off. Am I able to post a photo? I’m unsure or the rules for I just made this account.

I'd say go ahead and post the photo. If someone doesn't like it then they'll move it.

Problem and likely cause: clutch issues, Dumping clutch on take off

Mods: none

Submitted for warranty: not yet

L M A OOOOOOO. Yeah that one is definitely gonna be on you.

That's cool they Goodwill'd it, as you got pretty lucky there. Anytime the teeth get stripped off a gear, it's "not a matter for warranty" so I would be happy you got it goodwill'd and maybe not drive it so hard in the future.
