I agree that the car should start more easily, but let's not get carried away. It starts. Be glad you don't have a VW TDI. The issues that VW has been building into those cars since 2009 leave people stranded, sometimes causing engine damage. I owned a TDI before this Impreza, so I know what it feels like to be stranded by a car with less than 30k miles on it.

So for me, I don't think that cranking the starter for 5 or 10 seconds is a show stopper. It shouldn't happen, but as long as the car starts, is it really a big deal?

I doubt it's caused by the car wash. I don't use a manual car wash. The wash I use is automatic, where it pulls the car through. I do this once or twice/week, and have only had a hard-start once (unrelated to the wash).

Hi Everyone

Looks like we started seeing this on our 4 month old 2013 Impreza so I wanted to post my notes which I have provided to my dealer in Toronto. The car is parked outside all the time and is driven daily. We only use the recommended fuel (no high octane fuel).

To describe the issue this morning:

  1. Turned car on and Dash reading -8 Celsius.
  2. All dash lights light up and car radio indicator reports subaru, no warnings.
  3. Crank car over first time and engine turns over a couple times and did not starting.
  4. Wait a couple seconds and crank car over 2nd time and not starting.
  5. Crank car over 3rd time and it starts and runs for 20 seconds and shuts off.
  6. We then waited 15 minutes (while I looked under the hood:
  • Checked battery pole to make sure tight (notice it is not greased)
  • Checked Oil and fluids (looks good ... engine oil at first indicator)
  • Made sure no loose wires
  • Checked gas cap to make sure tight.
7. Turned car on and waited 2 minutes (made sure to listen for fuel pump to complete cycle). The car now started and idled high for 1.5 minutes.

I will follow up if I get a solution (As I am waiting for feedback from the service advisor).

Has anyone else tried the premium fuel trick? I might but it happens so rarely in my case so far.

In regards to the premium fuel trick,

I really don't understand the logic with this. Condensation in the tank freezing is the most common issue which causes fuel related issues. Premium (high octane fuels purpose is to not prematurely ignite when the engine is running at high temperatures. The best way to avoid condensation is to keep the fuel tank full to keep out the air.

My dealer (Brampton Subaru) did a service record check and did not see any reported issues relating hard starts in cold weather. So I think it is best we report the issue to the home dealership and make sure it is recorded.

Suggestion from dealer:
One thing that may help is that when starting the car is when turning the key leave it in the on position for 4-5 seconds before going to the start position, this allows the engine throttle control servo to cycle improving cold start. We may have to preform an "IDLE LEARN" which teaches the engine computer how much to open the throttle on start up.

First failed start happened yesterday morning. The temp was -7 celsius but the car had spent the night in the garage so not a factor. So failed he first 2 time i turned the key. Third time i waited for all the lights to do their things and the car finally started. I have about 12000 km on the car so far.

What makes you think this would be the solution, on a relatively new car?

I had my 2nd hard start event this morning. 28 deg F out. I let the gauges do their sweep and then while cranking it took a while for it to start. Once started though it was like normal; that is no rough idle or any of that.

Just saw this thread bump, I had my first hard start with just over 10k on the odometer. I turned the key, it barely started, and then about a second later it "caught" and the rpms seems to be normal.

When it is at or near freezing, I use the remote starter. Never has failed to start. Only time that I experienced a "non-start" at the first attempt was on my 2008 OBS, and that was caused by a misfire on all cylinders (cold morning @~40 F). Dealer isolated case of the misfire to be water in the gas tank (filled up at a station that I normally don't use - and will never use again).

This was my issue right here. Thanks Xafen for giving me the info I needed to get the service guys looking in the right direction. My issue appears to have been more severe than most I've read so far in this thread. Within a few hundred miles of a brand new 2013 Impreza Sport, I started having the same problem, only nothing in the thread seemed to make a difference. The car was most problematic to start in the mornings. As it is kept in a heated garage, temperature was never the issue. 19 time out of 20, the car wouldn't start on the first, second, or maybe third time. I also waited for the gauges to do their thing and listened for the fuel pump to complete its cycle. Didn't make a difference, also in my case, giving it premium fuel didn't help at all. After scheduling some time for the dealership to keep my car so they had ample opportunity to reproduce and mentioning the service bulletin Xafen found, they re-adjusted the camshaft position sensor with some shims, and the car starts like it should, no need to wait for the gauges, simply turn the key. After all this isn't some old diesel engine that needs time for glow plugs to heat up. It's a brand new car that should start right up without issue, and now mine does. So if anyone else is having the problem, I highly suggest mentioning this service bulletin to your service guys.

Your problem definitely sounds like it was a lot worse than most of the rest of ours. Glad it got fixed!

Most of us have trouble replicating it, and for me, I'm not worrying about it, because it hasn't happened in a long, long time. If it was ever even close to as severe as you describe, it would very much warrant a trip to the dealer.

Are you thinking about going to the dealer and seeing if they should install shims to adjust the cam position sensors?

I have the rough idle problem that happens at stoplights. It randomly occurs 3-4 times a week, usually when I've been driving for less than 5 minutes. The RPMS drop the car shakes and shudders and then it returns to normal. Feels very much like a misfire. I have an appointment on the 13 to get it checked out and will present the following TSB's to the dealer

Service Bulletin # 11-124-12

Bulletin Description: This bulletin will provide an inspection and repair procedure for camshaft position-related and/or engine misfire DTCs for 2.0L FB engine-equipped 2012MY or later Impreza and XV Crosstrek models. Service Bulletin # 11-125-12

Bulletin Description: This Service Bulletin will provide an inspection and repair procedure for EXHAUST camshaft position and / or misfire-related DTCs for FB engine-equipped 2012 and later MY Impreza and XV Crosstrek models with FB engines. The camshaft position sensor clearance may be out of specification causing these condition(s) and one or more of the DTCs to set. In addition to a Check Engine Light coming on, there may or may not be customer concerns of rough idle, extended cranking or no start.

do you have a light on, i don't, and from reading the TSB's it isn't clear if the light will be on or not.

I have also had this problem several times with my 2012 Impreza Sport (CVT). I've taken it to my dealer twice and both times they say they can't replicate it and therefore nothing was done.

In addition to the slow start, sometimes after the slow start I get the following message on the LCD

"The vehicle dynamics control system needs to be checked".

If I turn off the vehicle and start again the car starts fine and the error is gone.

Dealer said they couldn't duplicate the problem and there were no dtc's set. They did find an ecu update though and did that. So I guess we will see if it happens again, it hasn't since I scheduled the appointment

Car was not plugged in last night (it was, but apparently my timer failed so it never activated), temp -1f and car started in under 2 seconds so the ecu programming most of done something

Default Every 600 miles

My new 2013 Impreza has 1800 miles on it and I know exactly what you all are talking about. The car takes a while to start every 600 miles like clockwork. My 05 Honda Civic did something very similar and it had something to do with the emissions system cleaning itself out. Since my Subaru only has this issue every 600 miles to the exact mile, I figure it has something to do with the PZEV systems normal operation.

Any thoughts?

You can rule out weather. I think its a sensor or fuel delivery problem. It has only happened to me 1 time in 11 months.
