update on CEL
Quote:
ok, so was it a bad CC all along... or is something causing the problems that makes O2 sensors and the CC go bad??? My email to Subaru brought the response "we'll work with your local dealer on this", which meant they called him and asked him why he hadn't fixed the problem. Duh. Because he DOESNT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS! And apparently, neither does Subaru

When you post codes it helps to have the entire code- i.e. P0420 for catalyst inefficiency. The codes will be in a "PXXXX" format and that's what you should get from whoever scans it.
It's possible for the converter to fail on its own with no other problems being present, this does happen. It's also possible that there is an underlying issue that caused the cat to go bad, such as something that is causing the engine to misfire, run lean or run rich- all things that can stress the converter. |

cel
The dealer said mine was a read of first cylinders 2 and 4 misfire, then all cylinder misfire. Wonder what that's all about. The car runs fine etc.

P0304 - Cylinder 4 misfire
Quote:
Andrew, It would help, excepting that I've replaced my plugs, wires AND coil, and I've had the CEL return again and again. It's been on solid now for a good couple of weeks. Car seems to run fine, except for a bit of a burning smell. Related? Don't know. (I actually made some comments in another fellow's post about a P0302 he's getting: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...53#post5640553 ) With my car, I got the CEL, and figured it was old plugs & wires. I found oil in a sparkplug chamber. Blown valve gasket I guess. Replaced that and the plugs/wires, but the CEL came back. Long story short, after that the coil was swapped, then a compression test plus an injector cleaning service. Very frustrating. This is approaching two months. I have an Email in with SoA, to some higher-up in the Email department, but who knows... FYI, I've always used stock plugs and wires. NGK copper #BKR6E-11, of course. -S2- |

How did the compression test turn out? Might possibly be an issue with the knock sensor? |

Andrew,
Supposedly it's "perfect." Has all the right figures and everything... What concerns me are a few factors: - The CEL, for the first few weeks, would stay on for a couple days, then off for one. Give or take. Then, for a couple weeks straight it stayed on; I do a lot of driving, including a 90-minute round-trip work commute, five days/week. Except that two days ago it shut off, but then back on again today. Strange... - I can smell something burning when the car's idling. Sometimes while driving, but usually at idle when it warms up. Can't describe the smell, other than it smells like something's burning... Almost a clutch smell... (My clutch IS old and being replaced soon by an Exedy Sport, but I can't see a connection.) - This first started when I found the oil in a sparkplug chamber. Something tells me that's where the problem remains... but I'm not sure where or how. I have no idea how long the oil was in there; my last plug change was somewhere around 60k, and I changed these plugs around 97k (NGK coppers, OE wires). But I didn't get a CEL until a day or two before the plug swap......... I just want to find SOMEONE who can help me. Do you suppose I should Email Prodrive? Maybe they could help.... -S2- |

After replacing my fuel injector the car ran fine for about a month and then the CEL came back on, could feel the missfire this time above 3,000 rpm. Replaced coil pack. 3 weeks and everything is OK. 2002 WRX wagon with 41,000 miles.

24,000 miles I threw a P0138 today. (O2 sensor circuit high voltage, bank 1 sensor 2). two days ago I installed a turboback exhaust and the haward & scott P0420 delete fix. searched all over the forum, but it appears as though no one else is throwing the code. Any ideas? Thanks, Ben |

UPDATE: P0138 fix
Two nights ago, I pulled apart all the connections between the hayward & scott (scoobysport) cel fix and the ecu, and carefully cleaned and resoldered all the connections. Also sanded down the grounding point just to make sure of a metal-to-metal contact. Ive put 140 miles on the car since then and haven't gotten a cel yet. Turns out I might have just had a dirty connection somewhere, which would increase the resistance in the circuit and drive up the voltage (V=IR?). So. Lessons learned: 1. make sure connections are CLEAN before soldering. Hand oils and other car related gunk may fubar up your splicing job. Wearing gloves while soldering helps. 2. make sure your soldering iron is powerful enough. I used a 25 watt iron at first that had trouble melting the solder, this might have resulted in a cold joint that didnt conduct very well. The iron has to be powerful enough to heat the WIRES (not the solder) to a point that melt the solder when you feed the solder onto the connection. A 40 watt iron will work fine. 3. pray. Hope this helps. Have fun guys. Ben |

All true, EP.
Another thing that makes solering much better and *enjoyable* is real good solder. Plain jane Kester rosin core is kind of resistant to wetting and doesn't have real good flow characteristics. It also will make a cold joint if you aren't real good. WBT or WonderSolder is incredible stuff. It's 4% silver, and made for high-end audio apps, but it is a dream to use on everything. Parts Express sells the WBT schtuff, and while it costs a little bit more, it's worth it, IMO. You would have to try real hard to make a cold joint, and it flows like that liquid metal crap on Neo in The Matrix. Even someone who has never soldered before can do a great job with this. [/o.t. -Flushed coolant -Changed oil/filter -New Spark Plugs -New Wires -Reset ECU -Went back to stock exhaust (not really related) The car drove for 4 days without interferance but the CEL came back. It's been on for another 10-14days again I need to go get it read again to see if it is the same thing... Any suggestions? Advice? Very sparatically, my car feels very quick - I actually ran a 0-60 of under 9.0s which I have never done w/ the good ol OBS (record to date was 9.3 )... But 90% of the time, my car is driving more like 9.8-10s 0-60 ... Oh, I'm also at around 110,700mi. now. I NEED SOME HELP! Thanks -Ben |

2001 2.5RS ~ 73k miles
Code: P1443 mods: underdrive pulley, ganzflow intake, prodrive axle back. -CEL appeared while I was driving on highway w/ CC on (that's when I noticed it anyway). I had filled the tank the day before w/ 89 octane. Gas cap was tightened but not "clicked" tight. I live 1.5 hrs away from dealership, so I just cleared code & I'll wait to see if it comes back. |
