Right - but I mean those tend to be hey, if you gonna spend $300 on sub, spend an extra $200 and get the SVS.

In this situation, you're getting something for $150 - which drastically changes the conversation.

Like I get that the SVS is a 96/97 point wine for $100. But is the Klipsch (this one, not the RPs) a 91 pt wine for sub $15?

Agree but this is a bottle of wine that you'll have in your house for years most likely so maybe those extra points matter or maybe they don't - that is a personal choice. They're all gonna rumble and boom to some extent.

They're comparable.

The SVS is going to hit lower, and has a better warranty, Whether that's worth the additional cost at these current price points, I couldn't say. At MSRP, though, the SVS would ne a no-brainer.

I'm sure the Klipsch is going to be just fine. There's a reason they and Def Tech are the Big Box store darling brands. They sound pretty good.

so since I have to take the deftech BP9060 in for service again, I'm debating just selling them once it is repaired again and going with something that is totally passive and <$5k for a pair.

I'm hoping to demo a pair of Klipsch RF-7 IIIs this evening since my friends with similar tastes as me tend to go down the Klipsch route. My dad had a great set of JBLs many moons ago when I was growing up and I liked how they did things so I'm trying to find some place where I can listen to the JBL HDi 3800s.

My experience thus far has been that I'm quite a bit more picky about how the mains perform for music than I am for movies. Anything I should consider? Keith, did your MArtin Logans come in yet?

Damn, I would love to replace my RP250F mains with RF-7 III's. The larger drivers would be nice, especially since I don't run a sub in my 5 channel system, or my 2 channel system for that matter...

If you grew up with JBL's, there's a good chance you'll be quite happy with Klipsch. I find Klipsch to be ultra detailed and quite musical. I also like how efficient Klipsch are. The RF-7's are made in the USA as well. I run Klipsch Forte III's in my 2 channel system and find them to be absolutely incredible speakers.

So many great options at 5k. Revel 208s as well as those JBLs would be on my short list. Dynaudo Evoke series getting good reviews as well.

yeah, not going to lie the efficiency and power handling and corresponding SPL capabilities are a big plus for me since they are in a big room and I like it loud. As it stands now things will be powered
I have a JL e112 sub that hits HARD to fatten up the bottom end but I want the mains to go as low as possible so I have fat bottom-end.

5k buys a nice set of used Khorns if you want to get really loud and really big.

I like to dabble in loud occasionally. My buddy has a pair of late 80s Khorns. I turned them way up for a few seconds to satisfy my curiosity. It is clear I had no prior concept of what loud is.

I think the 12" might be too much for our house, the setup I have already rattles the main floor, I fear a 12" will cause too many fights. I guess I can always mess with the settings once it's in to not be too obnoxious, we'll see!

Get the 12" sub, put a saddle on it, put your lady in the saddle. Turn on the black hole scene from Gravity.

I do have the bluray or maybe even the 4k disc of Gravity. I haven't watched it since that transition medium disc arrived, I should do that!

My bad, not Gravity. I meant the black hole scene in Interstellar.

Ok, I don't think one can go wrong for $163 delivered. Plus Costco - so I can always return.

no such thing as too much sub. literally the only limited thing would be WAF (wife acceptance factor).

ended up demoing a pair of B&W 702 S2s. Very nice but was being driven in the demo room by a 350wpc Rotel amp. Not sure how much ****tier it will sound with my Anthem MRX-720 (140wpc). Didn't really crank it to the point where power would matter but still...

Moved/replaced my temporary surround speakers from way too high on the ceiling to right behind the seating position at head height, and made a shelf for one. Used some Honey Locust I had kicking around, black pipe fittings, and ebony stain. Came out pretty good and sounds MUCH better. Now it's all Boston Acoustics/SVS.

I don't have the disc for Interstellar, but I did pop in Gravity (I have the 3D bluray disc, not the 4k) and I watched the first 10-15 mins or so and got the "you're shaking the whole house" comment when I came back upstairs. To be fair, I do have the "bass" setting on my receiver set to MAX, so there's that. LOL

See above. The new house has no carpeting on the main floor, which we have found tends to echo sounds more than we were aware of. I'm sure with a sub I could turn that bass setting all the way down to 0 and it would be a much cleaner bass, but the WAF is pretty low.

What is everyone's go to movie for testing their HT setup?

I downloaded the Dolby helicopter demo, just for calibrating the height speakers. It plays sound over the height only. Very useful.

Spiderman Far from Home - incredible surround mix.
Spiderverse - use it for testing sound track and bass.

I have the iOS THX app that I have used in the past to configure the picture more than the audio, it's clunky but it works.

I may have to rewatch Spiderverse, I only saw it the one time, but we have it on iTunes I think.

I'm gonna have the kids watch Gravity with me one night this week, in the dark down there with the stereo all the way up, I think they'll love it!
