Default Post your used oil analysis (UOA's) here!

Would be nice to have a bunch of UOA's all in one thread. I'll have my first one for Pennzoil Ultra pretty soon here. Post yours if you have one!

People generally start new threads for UOAs around here, though I think a central repository is a pretty good idea. I'll get things started with some links to UOA threads I can find easily.

My UOA history is HERE. Currently 45k mi worth.

My Father's UOA history in his Outback 3.6 is HERE. 50k mi and counting.

Dennis (bluesubie) posts a new thread for each uoa in his '04 Forester XT. He also changes oil brand/type like women change clothes.

M1 0w40 UOA
Motul X-Lite 0w30 UOA
Pennzoil Ultra 5w40 UOA
Another UOA with M1 0w40
Amsoil SSO 0w30

Castrol Syntec 0w30

Castrol Syntec 0w30 #2
Castrol Syntec 0w30 #3
Castrol Syntec 0w30 #4
Castrol Syntec 0w30 #5
And finally M1 10w30 in Dennis' old WRX

He says motul is a thin 30 weight oil....I thought it was one of the thicker 30 weights.

What are the thickest 30 weights oils?

Wow, that's a bit stalkerish. Good idea for the people that will actually look for data. I wouldn't be surprised if someone replies to this thread and asks if anyone has seen any uoa's on GC or Mobil1 0W-40. I wish I would have done a uoa on the WRX after it was stolen and recovered.

Motul has several 5W-30's and the Eco-nergy is on the thin side, although it does have the old school API SL additive levels.
Product Data Sheet (mm2 is pretty much the same as cst):

http://www.motul.com/system/product_...pdf?1350664219

30 weight oils are between 9.3 and 12.5 cst's at 100C. Euro spec oils (and usually racing oils) are the thickest 30 weights. Euro oils also have a thicker High Temp High Shear viscosity for better shear stability (ACEA A3). Of course, you can't have your cake and eat it too so no ACEA A3 oil meets ILSAC GF4/GF5 Energy/Resource Conserving specs.

I would pick a higher HTHS viscosity over a higher kinematic viscosity at 100C. Wow, I just noticed the Motul Eco-nergy HTHS is now 3.4 which is the highest I've ever seen in a non ACEA A3 or racing 5W-30.

The username search function makes it a bit too easy to be creepy. I just went down the list of threads you started and copied the links. Took about 5 minutes.

You're right, nobody will look at this thread, but it'll give us one more tool to brow beat the stupid question askers.

Thickest current Resource Conserving (ILSAC GF-5) oils I'm aware of are Amsoil OE and XL 5w30 with HTHS of 3.3 cSt.

Thickest non-RC oils are the high mileage and Euro varieties like Dennis said. A Non-exhaustive list:

Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic
Valvoline Synpower MST 5w30
Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w30
Castrol SLX OE
Castrol Syntec 0w30 (German Castrol)
Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w30

I'm using Pennzoil ultra 5w-30 (non euro I believe). Anyone know if that oil is thick enough for hard driving on 100 degree days?

It's showing some decent uoa's in a WRX that's stock and sees a lot of highway mileage and it's probably the best GF5 oil out there. Whether or not it's thick enough for your application would be best answered with your own uoa. Use Rotella T6 for top ups and you're good to go.

Depends how you're driving on that 100 degree day. Highway cruising will be fine. Track day? Get a good 40wt (RT6).

No track, but I do enjoy boost quite often.

On the street it's hard to enjoy boost for long enough to really heat the oil. You run into traffic or speed limits before you cook the oil. On the track you can spend much more time at full throttle and do it consistently for a full 20 minute session.

Here's a 9,000 mile run on Motul 8100 5W-40 X-cess from a Stage IV 18G Bugeye.

Note the high silicon likely from the K&N air filter.

Here is my UOA for my 2012 WRX Switched from factory fill at around 4,000 per the dealer.

Factory Fill (4k miles) -> Castrol Syn 5w-40 (4k miles) sitting at 8K miles on rig, total.

hope that wasn't too confusing.

Stage 2 cobb tune 93

Thoughts? I am now running rotella t6 5w-40.

A little too much break-in noise to say much about the UOA IMO. I don't know why this oil doesn't get much respect. Decent moly, calcium, boron, and ZDDP. A little bit of shearing to a 30 weight but that's not unusual.

Default Pu 5w-40 Uoa

Here is my UOA on PU Euro 5W-40. My WRX consumed more than 1L of it over 5,500 kms.

Stock OEM blue oil filter.
My driving pattern involved a mix of highway and some short driving distances and cold ambient temperatures in November and December.
The car is basically stock with full Turbo Back & Up-pipe exhaust and Stage 2 Cobb tune.
Stock and original turbo.

Cheers,
=L=

Probably because it's not very common. I've only seen it in quarts at auto part stores which means $8+ per quart. Seems to be pretty good stuff though.

Looks like a very good report other than the consumption. The makeup oil helps the flashpoint and viscosity look great. PUE is good stuff.

Does your car consume other oils just as fast? Did you put PUE back in the car?

My car was thirsty as well when I ran PU 5W-40 (2 qts in 6k miles). See my uoa above posted by gps.

When the dealer/ tech did the oil change, I asked what he was going to use, and he said the " Castrol Syntec 5w-40 " and I asked why he wasn't putting in the Subaru Synthetic, he replied with the hot summer and turbo that he suggested 5w-40 and it would be documented.

I do a 50/50 highway commute that's 25 miles. And I drive the car WOT after a full warm up. I dont beat on it, but definitely get into boost. No redlining, for whatever that's worth. Just to give some insight on my driving habits.

Will post another report in the fall when I run the RT6 for a while. Subaru OEM filters.

Thanks guys

Here's my UOA on my 2013 WRX at 3300 or so miles. Driven pretty gently, but with AC on, and it hot weather (Houston).

Looks pretty typical of a factory fill UOA. Yours held viscosity better than some, or it possibly was thinner earlier and has gotten thicker with continued use.

Amazingly low Fe and Al. Also surprisingly low TBN for 3,000 miles. Makes you wonder about taking it to 7,500 mi. This oil would have to be very overbased to hold its TBN for another 4,200 mi. It's got a lot of Calcium, but 3.2 TBN less than halfway through the OCI is a bit concerning.

I thought the sample looked really nasty, but I know nothing really. I do know that I'm much happier with OCI at 3500 miles or thereabouts, and checking the all fluids every fillup. No gas or coolant or water in the oil, but this car does use a little oil, I'm estimating maybe 1/2 - 1 qt per 3000, and the coolant has dropped off the top mark when hot, by almost 1cm, in about 1200 miles.

I would not be surprised if it ran better on a tune, but I'm staying with stock.

What looked nasty was likely all that Moly. Moly-disulfide is very dark brown/black.

3,500 mi is not excessively short, but 5,000 mi should be no problem with the right oil, and likely better for the car in the long run.

What oil are you using now?

Just what the dealer threw in on my free oil change schedule. Hopefully it's the Subaru Synthetic 5W30, per warranty requirements.

I should be about 7000 in a couple months, so I'll get another UOA for my current fill and see what that looks like.
