Default Did 'The Talk' influence you? (Inspired by Janq's rape thread)

Did your parents talk to you about sex when you were a kid? If so, at what age? Did what they told you have any impact, or in any way influence you to hold off on having sex, have safe sex, avoid temptation, etc?

No, they gave me a book when I was...8?? 10?? I was glad...after I read it I was glad they didn't tell me directly. I chose when to have sex on my own...they didn't try to persuade me in any direction. Good parents.

My parents let me watch Porky's when I was in 3rd grade...I think it went all down hill from there...

For many years my Mom worked dealing with teen sexuality and other teen issues, running teen clinics and the such...I grew up always knowing about sex, safe sex, women's anatomy, and for me it was a natural thing and not a taboo thing to be in awe of or scared of...I think that was the best method as it neither scared me or enticed me...

I remember the first class like it was yesterday. The principal came in and the first question was to us boys: "Do you know if you are a male or female?"

:all of us looked around with confused looks on our faces:

my parents put me in an after school program when I was in fifth grade called 'My Body and Me'. We got the formal 'talk'.

It came in handy two years later when having to sit in a police cruiser and get grilled by a cop about the next door neighbor's daughter who was, umm, orally servicing all the teenage guys from the neighborhood in our garage (they had paper routes and she would sneak out her bedroom window at 4am). Her dad was a cop and went ballistic, as if everyone else was at fault.

My dad talked to me about the '69 Camero's and the Z28 DZ car and the differences in the RS/SS with the hide away headlights. How you can tell a '57 Chevy from a '58.

I remember my dad saying if I had a question, I should ask him. I was 12 at the time and didn't know what he was talking about. I was helping him fix the washing machine.

Never had "the talk" about sex, religion, or damn near anything else of importance. I did get the "drugs are bad, mkay" talk, but luckily I turned out just fine and figured most everything out on my own.

No talk from teh parnets. Sex ed in school started in 4th or 5th grade. Had no real effect on me when I had started having sex.

Gardesil HPV innoculations will create a new generation of girls who get "the talk" from their doctor by/around age 12. It will also spawn a new generation of parents who are in denial of teen sex, and will prevent the talk and the treatment.

12-year-old boys are still left to discuss sex amongst themselves while huddled in the corner of the playground looking at an old copy of National Geographic with topless natives.

Yeah, I got the talk about a year late. Because it was so hard to figger out what me and the GF were doing when I'd go to her house every morning all summer, and come home when her parents got home from work... I'm still a bit young, so maybe someone can give me perspective: do you really become that oblivious after 40?
