12ms ping is not high...

Plan is 200/10 but my modem caps me at 150. Looking forward to moving to fiber when we move.

Wire or wireless isn't going to make a huge difference. Your distance from the server the test is run against will. My wireless adds 1-3ms of latency. Anyhow 12ms isn't very much at all. The old Battlefield servers I used to play on didn't kick players unless their latency was above 300ms.

Not like you fancy first worlders with your triple digit speeds, but this gets the job done.

We had Charter 65/5. A few months I heard that they had increased the speeds, so I started a chat with them online.

Now we have 100/10 for the same price

You are where I was a few years ago, still clinging on to 1.5 Mbps DSL. Now I'm getting 150+ for the same price. It's still amazing to me being able to download a 20 GB game in minutes instead of hours.

I honestly cannot imagine how frustrated and salty I would be if that was my life. First off, I work from home, so at a bare minimum I need a decent connection. On the weekend, I stream/download MotoGP and F1 in addition to the usual Netflix in 4k.

Like most things here, it's not cheap. Our 50mbs costs $100/mo but work chips in $60, so it's not too shabby.

Worst part about is I am less than 1 mile away from Fiber, but since my road only has 8-9 houses (10-150 acre parcels) they won't run a line.

I actually used to work from home a lot on a 1.5 Mb line. I had a laptop on my desk at work and a laptop at home. I would just VPN into work and RDP into the laptop on my desk. Basically just working as a thin client.

The worst was games. I would buy a game that was like 60GB and then as to not interrupt games I was currently playing I would start the download when I went to bed and pause it whenever I wanted to do anything on the internets. Then I would get to play the game 3 days after launch at a minimum. I got seriously trolled by GTA V. Bought a physical copy and it basically just had a downloader on the disc.

Pretty sure I have the same setup. My PC is sitting in the server room back in the US and I VPN into it via my laptop here.

I spent all Monday using my phone as a hotspot after Sunday's lightning strike took out our modem. It wasn't too bad at all for a temporary fix.

So my new neighbor may pay to have fiber run down our road, over a mile.

He makes me feel poor..um..er.

Back in the day around '99 or '00, we had a customer move to the area from FL. He paid 6 figures to have a dedicated DSL line run to his house (BFE area) from the closest phone company station.

He was getting kicked off his shared DSL line while trying to trade stocks, etc. So, he had a direct line ran. lol

I was recently upgraded for free to 500 Mbps down and 15 Mbps up. I had 100 Mbps down and 6 Mbps up. There is finally another company is moving into the area and working to get the area with 1 Gbps internet and my current company is scrambling to make customers happy by upgrading them to much faster plans for free.

I actually downgraded my speed.

Before I moved I had 400mbps down
When I moved here I got 600 down, saw ZERO change in real world performance.
Then my router crapped the bed and I was getting ~250mbps down, and didn't notice it for weeks.
At 250 I could, with zero slowdown

Stream netflix on 2 devices at once, while playing a FPS on my PC, and my wife using skype perfectly clear. I also didn't notice any drop in download speeds on large files, because you can't DL any faster than their server can UL to you and good luck getting one that sends more than a 300 line can handle.

So I called and downgraded to the 300mbps package, because real world, it makes no real difference for 99.9% of stuff even power users do. And its $30 a month cheaper

OK,
So the not-poor neighbor hasn't done anything so I am looking at options. Verizon might have come through for me.

After talking to them I can get ~600 GB of 4G each month and the rest at 3G at no additional charge. We clock our local tower at ~10 Mbps for each device so MUCH better than we have now. They will also upgrade us to 5G when available at no charge.

My question is anyone using 4G for home internet use? if so, what has your experience been like?

Right now only about 30Gs but at low quality due to bandwidth restrictions.
