16 Impreza 2.5i Won't Shut Down with Key Out
This is an FYI and an inquiry as to whether anyone else has run in to this.
2016 Impreza 2.5i just under 15k miles, all factory equipment, no mods, no flood, battery is new since 1-18 (at least that's the date on the sticker) and its a "Subaru" battery. Issue started last week. The car was running fine and normal. Parked, turned the key off, rpm rises about 500 rpm, cluster lights up like a christmas tree. Reinserted key to "Run" position and rpm dropped, cluster still lit up with warnings. Back to "Off", removed key, rpms back up. I pulled it in to the bay and hooked up to it with the key in "Run" and all modules reporting communication errors. Turn the key to "Off", engine still running and I scanned again getting same codes BUT the scanner isn't seeing all the modules this time so some of them are shutting down with the key "Off". It finally shut down on its own. Started it, shut it off and it shuts down like normal. A few more tries and it acts normal so it got parked in its spot and put it on my list to check later. 2 days later it had to be jumped to start. Battery was down to 5V. So things on the car were still on. Pulled it in to the bay and it doesn't shut off. Disconnect the battery and its still running. 3 minutes, it shuts off. I think the fuel pump finally shut off and it ran out of fuel pressure because the throttle body is cycling. Checked connections, grounds, fuses (several still on with key out). Since its under 15k miles and I have a full load of cars to take care of I sent it to Subaru to deal with as I believe it will take up a lot of time to find the issue. The service dept at Subaru says its new to them so I also expect a tech from SOA may get involved. My theory is to discount the ignition switch since modules shut down with the key out and the power accessories like windows, radio, HVAC, etc. stop functioning and do not have power. It also will not come out of Park without the key in "Run". Ignition relay could be sticking, but then again other modules powered when the relay is on should have stayed on as well. Thoughts?????

It's possible that wiring harness could be damaged due to animals. I would check for any exposed wires. Something is definitely shorted out.

I'm pretty sure this is normal operation. Back in 1987 we didn't have those safety features and a nephew of mine pulled a car of mine out of park while I wasn't watching, and of course it was on a hill.
A 16 with 15k on it should still be covered under warranty. I'm interested to hear what the problem is. |
