Question Road Trip

So in order to get my Subie I have to make a pilgramage of sorts. My wife and I need to drive our leased MY98 Jeep Cherokee to Alabama to drop it off and buy the WRX. Question: How should I break it in? I've got 800 miles of highway between Huntsville and Baltimore. What's my plan of action? Any suggestions would be very helpfull. Thank you in advance.

Cool

Well, your best bet is probably to keep the revs low (under 4000 rpm or so) for at least the first 500 miles. This is a massive generalization though, and may not apply perfectly to your new Subaru. I'd avoid full throttle runs, etc. until you get it home. 800 miles of easy driving should be enough to fully break in your new car!

Thanks. Should I worry about setting the cruise and not varying the RPMs enough on the long trip?

Keeping the rpm's low isn't as big of a deal as varing the rpm's. if you don't vary the rpm's in breakin you can create a hotspot in your engine.so yes varing rpm's is very important, but also don't take it very high on the tach either.

A long highway trip like that (12-14 hours probably) is not the best thing for a brand new engine. Every owners manual I have seen from American, German and Japanese manufacturers, have all stated that it is important not to run the car for extended periods at a constant rpm. The rpm's must me varied. Also, the do not exceed 4000 rpm (or thereabout) also applies. This is hard to do on a long highway trip. You can do it but it takes effort.

I don't mind going off highway. Would two to three hour segments, off highway, varying the RPM's, and keeping it below 4000 be alright. How long should I stop between segments? Anyone have good routes in mind (preferably less than 1000). I'll be getting the car on a saturday and leaving on sunday. What if I drove it around huntsville right after I get the car for about 100 miles, then let it rest, then late that evening took it out for another hundred or so. Then started the trip mentioned above in this post, the next day?

try hopping onto 301 north off 95 north when you can, lots of stoplights for varying RPM. Just plan it so its not rush hour (like on a weekend or late at night) because traffic gets sorta bad. It runs right into I97 and up to baltimore.

Oh, and watch out for cops!!!!!!

O.K. for the first 1000 miles is usually a good brake in period. And you should not go above 4000rpms and should varry the rpms as much a posible. Also don't set the cruse control. And don't go above 80mph. And try to varry the speed on highway every 10 min.s or so. Thus making you varry the rpms. And try not to make the trip all highway home.
