When I bought my car, it came with a 1 year scca membership (that was in 2004). Ironically, that's THE reason I'm racing today.

Not sure if their views have changed since then. They were a sponsor at national events last year...

Well working for a Subaru dealership for a while and autocrossing in a regional scca group sponsored by another subaru dealer I've never heard of any warranties being voided for autoxing.

Yea agreed Fairway Subaru and Folger Subaru both have had a big presence in the Carolina's with a huge thanks from us enthusiast.

I do think some Mods to your car will make them think twice about warranty work though

but what if the only mods that are being done is for a stock class which the only big thing is shocks and that is it.

It's going to depend on your dealership, frankly. Around Maryland, we have Annapolis Subaru, which is pretty mod-friendly. But there have been horror stories of other dealerships... but then again, I think you're going to get that with all makes. If you try taking the car in for a clutch under warranty, and you've obviously been using it for drag strip style (and ProSolo style) launches, you're not going to win that battle, as it would fall under the "abuse" rating.

The thing that disappoints me this year is that Subaru has dropped all SCCA Solo contingency. I really thought long and hard about which car I was going to prep for ESP after that. The Subaru no longer was the "smart money," if you know what I mean.

Yeah once you start modding it all depends on the dealership.

If you are just talking about staying in stock class you should be fine as those parts will only void the warranty on suspension stuff.

In recent years the Subaru warranty has included:

Quote:
Damage Caused Due to Use of Vehicle in Competitive Events
These warranties do not cover damage to any component that is the result of operating the vehicle in any competition or racing event.
https://www.subaru.com/my-subaru/warranties-2009.html

So they can deny warranty on anything they believe is a result of autoxing. Basically it is like Karen said - you have to hope the dealership is reasonable about it. Of course you too have to be reasonable in your expectations.

i know of a few people that bought cars from a local subaru dealership years back, got the scca membership, raced, then were denied warranty work because they used the membership the dealership gave them when they bought the car. lets just say they arent very well liked in the local motorsports croud..

To be fair though, it's not just Subaru. Many manufacturers advertise their vehicles using "sexy" images of them sliding sideways or taking on rocky trails, etc but then exclude you from coverage if you do any of that. Giving away SCCA memberships, advertising 0-60 in 5.x secs, or showing the new STi drifting are just different aspects of the tension between image building and what they are willing to warrant.

That is what I would recommend. And, if you do end up needing to take the car in, make sure you remove anything that can be connected to autocross or competitive driving. I remember a guy a few years back who had his warranty voided on his Acura because he left his HPDE logbook on the passenger seat when he took the car in to have the brakes looked at under warranty. <shakes head>

I just got a brand new 08 less then two month ago and it is doing some autocross.

This is my thinking if I have common wear items go out early I am not going to try and get it covered from warrenty. In most cases if I blow of sturt or a brake pad that is something that is on my upgrade list all ready. If I have to fight with the dealer I will but they have to show me how it was caused by autocross.

i got lucky with my dealership. Broke the engine at a track day. Dealer warrantied it. I had swapped the tires, but the stickers were still on. It wasn't a race though... but still. They know I race it. =)

You car will do all the talking regardless of if you left your stickers on, helmet in the car, or what ever. abuse the car and expect to pay.

pay to play.

any smart tech can see signs of abuse. its not something you can hide. best bet is to present your car to them. let it do the talking and then be honest with them. If you blow your motor and burn up your clutch or brakes... don't go crying to SOA expecting warranty and then get pissed off when they stamp DENIED on your claim. Warranty is for defective parts... thats it.

But have fun autocrossing. I autocross my STi. I don't expect warranty on anything that breaks... but then again I know better to since I work at a subaru dealership. I get to see all the "I was just driving along, honest." bs on a regular basis.

unfortunatly all that BS makes it hard for legit claims to get approved.

If abuse is so easy to detect, why would it be hard to approve the easily identifiable legit claims?

Because a lot of dealers shaft their techs on warranty work. So, it's actually in the tech's best interest to not do the work as warranty (since many dealers only pay them at 1/2 the "regular work" rate).

At least that's how my brother (who is a mechanic) explained it to me. He absolutely detests warranty work, even when it isn't remotely due to abuse or whatever.

Well that's interesting. All the mechanics I've known as well as the ones I worked with for 5 years in a Chevy dealership were paid a set hourly rate. These were union mechanics and I know they didn't have a floating hourly rate. Now, how the dealership could change the "book" time for a repair for a customer that was paying out of pocket vs. a customer who "paid" for the warranty within the car's price is beyond me.

Same here, in 05. That was the last year they offered it.

I got an SCCA membership card when I bought my WRX back in 2003. I did heavy autocrossing and even had an aftermarket ECU to tune the engine. Once, I was tuning for a very aggressive launch control and it ended up in me blowing my radiator. I went over to the dealership and they know I auto cross and had an aftermarket ECU. They still covered in under warranty.

I guess there are many factors that people look at. They knew I baby my car when I drive on the street. They knew I was reasonably knowlegable about what I should or should not do. They also know I had been taking my car to them for regular maintenance work. So the dealership will do whatever they can to ensure I keep coming back.

Most dealers do it differently. What they charge the customer for non-warranty repairs is usually almost double what the manufacturer will pay for the same job under warranty.
