Default Replaced ECU, crank no start

I am trying to troubleshoot a P2109 related issue, and I tried swapping the ECU for a used one and I am getting a crank no start. I hear the fuel pump whine, but it keeps cranking and doesn't turn over. It seems like there isn't any spark. Plugged my old ECU back in and it fired right up. Does something need to be done when swapping an ECU prior to starting the car or should it start up normally if the ECU is working?

Just a guess, but aren't 2007 Can bus? Maybe it is something do to with the immobilizer system and your swapped ecu doesn't recognize your key? Not sure if that has anything to do with your issue.

^^^ +1 for immobilizer issue. The ecu is looking for a specific radio signal from the "chip" key.

Google subaru ecu clone. There seem to be paid services or you can do it yourself if you are 31337 hax0r.

If your key does not have an fcc id on it, then it may be different...may be a physical chip with no radio signal...

I was thinking there may be an immobilizer issue but did not know if that applied to this year and model. The key for this car is an aftermarket one because the original keys were lost and not sold to me with the car. I do not have a working fob either.

Does it have fcc id on the back? Its a long number. Again not 100% surefor that year.....
Maybe call up one of the clone services and see what they say. They pop up pretty easy when searching ecu clone.

Back in the day, I seem to recall, you had to get to the dealer to re-marry the ECU and keys. Maybe now day's a good repair shop can do it or a Locksmith.

If his car doesn't have the OEM keys, I doubt he has that small tag. I think a lot of people don't know what that tag is for.

^^^ Shet man good memory, yeah if you only had the non fob keys left, you could start your car but not program any new keys. The master key.

I bought the car from a dealer who had picked from a state auction after it was abandoned by the owner. They got a single new key for it that is clearly aftermarket. It does not have a fob on it, it's just a key that was cut.

Easy enough to verify if it has an immobilizer. Using the ECM that won't start, turn the key to start - look at the instrument cluster - if you see a red light with a key or a padlock then you have an immobilizer. Most any mobile locksmith these days can marry your key to that ECM.

Having said all that a P2109 is rarely caused by an ECM. It is usually a fault in the throttle body or a problem with the wiring - loose ground - loose connector (particularly where engine harness and bulkhead harness mate) or rodent damage (chewed wiring).
Have you looked to see if the throttle plate is jammed or loose?

For a 2007, simply swapping in a used ECM will 100% NOT work unless you have the corresponding immobilizer and key chip.

An already assigned, used ECM cannot be reprogrammed to match your existing immobilizer, at least by a dealer. There used to be 3rd parties capable of reprogramming it, but from what I recall it was approx the same cost of a full used set (matching ECM, immobilizer, ignition cylinder assembly & set of keys).

The dealer cannot reprogram a used, already assigned ECM despite what they claim. When it comes down to it, they won't be able to do it. The dealer can only program a new, unassigned, ECM to match your current immobilizer/ key.
