Post Sunroof-has anyone installed one on WRX

Anyone installed a sunroof. Someone
suggested earlier that it couldn't be put
in the WRX. Is this true?

You could put a sunroof in the WRX, but why would you? First you would be compromising the structural integrity as there is a main body structural brace running over the roof. That is why the WRX has no factory sunroof. The car is much stiffer than the previous generation Impreza and this roof structure is partially why. Yeah, you could probably find some detail/modification shop that would gladly cut your roof up, but I wouldn't advise it.

Punk: Thanks for the reply. I'm only
asking because a salesman at my dealer said
a fellow with a SVX phoned and wanted to get
a WRX. When he found out it didn't have a
sunroof he didn't want it. Dealer didn't
seem to know much. I told him i thought you
couldn't put one in because of the steel bar in the roof.

Sure it will look good, but look what you are actually doing to the car. You are cutting out a main roof structural support possibly affecting vehicle crash safety, longevity and ultimate performance handling. Is it really worth it just to have a sunroof? Do what you need to do but not on my WRX!

When I put a sunroof in my old 240Z, it actually tightened up the body a noticable amount. Granted it was a '72 and there were no support ribs across the roof, just thin sheet metal. But, the sunroof's frame made a noticable difference, reducing some of the creaks and noises. Today's cars are obviously more structuraly sound w/ support rails running along the roof, but I think putting in a sunroof would not adversely affect the structural integrity at any noticable amount. As for resale value. I don't know. I do know I'd prefer to have a sunroof.

I was even considering what it would take to mount a simple aftermarket pop-up sunroof in place of my '99's sunroof. My '99's sunroof creaks soooo much more than my '72 240Z's did. Actually, my Z's never creaked. My '99 RS's sunroof is the worst of any car I've ever owned.

Hey, why not? Probably have about the same affect on resale.

I agree though, the 98-01 RS sunroof is baaaad. Creaks like an 18th century wooden staircase...

I use mine because it's there, but I'd much rather it wasn't there and my car was more solid.

Chris: Can you install 1 of those air vents on the roof like the Type RA's? That would be tight!
