Question Impreza Outback Sport (2005) - high insurance

I bought my daughter her first car and found a 2005 Impreza Outback Sport 5 speed that she loves. (She wanted a manual!) I know Allstate is expensive right of the bat, but even Geico which my 2015 WRX is on (much less than Allstate) is expensive.

The reason I am writing this thread is because when I go the auto parts store, I have found that I have to be very careful that I get the correct parts. They either think I'm asking about a WRX or something else. I am wondering if these cars have a similar issue when it comes to insurance.

Is it just me, or are others having a similar issue with insurance for the old Impreza Outback Sports?

Insurance like religion, is very personal. God, i mean insurance, has a plan for all of us. Sounds like you are dealing with either sins of the father, or you just added a 15 year old to your plan lol!

This is very likely because of your daughter's age or years of driving. My older son bought his first car, a 2004 Honda S2000 and got quotes from everyone including from my own independent agent who chose Mapfre for him, which I also have. His quote from Geico was 3 times what Mapfre quoted. Do you have independent agents in Texas? I'm in Mass where 80% of people go with an independent. I think of it this way.....if my insurance company is gobbled up by Ginormous-evil-empire-company, and doubles your rates, you'll go to them and ask for a cheaper rate. They'll look around and tell you that you're out of luck. An independent agent can see the morons increasing rates and warn their customers to switch to another company at renewal time. This, by the way, happened to me. I switched and avoided any increase.

As we all know, things that can decrease rates include being married, living in a low risk zip code, having multiple cars on the policy, being a AAA member, good student discount, and having a low risk car. You should ask your insurance company what a low risk list of cars is. It's pretty well known that an STi is significantly cheaper to insure than a WRX. Why? Too many weenie doofuses can afford a WRX and go do stupidity with it. STis are significantly more expensive, so are treated better by their owners. Wanna see a big dollar insurance car? Buy a Tesla.

I'm in about the lowest risk group. 2nd lowest risk town in Mass. My 14 Jeep with high liability and full coverage with $1000 deductible costs me $295 a year. My youngest son with several accidents and tickets is in a 13 Crosstrek and it costs $2200 a year.

My whole purpose for this thread is to find someone who has also insured an Impreza Outback Sport to find out if they encountered a similar situation as me. Both Geico and Allstate (and probably more insurers) don't track who drives what car on the policy. Everyone on the policy (at the same address) has equal access to all cars on the policy (at that address). When I got a quote to add my daughter and her car to my Geico policy that has my WRX on it, my WRX cost went up, of course, and the cost for her car was very close to the WRX. Same with Allstate (comparing to an earlier quote I got for my WRX @ Allstate). Seems really strange considering her car is no where near the performance of the WRX and ought to cost less to repair. Maybe the Impreza Outback Sports are easier to steal and they're targeted more?

This similarity in cost plus the parts store confusion I've encountered where they tend to think I'm asking about a WRX when I tell them Impreza Outback Sport made me wonder if insurance companies make a similar mistake.

I'm not looking to compare actual costs here with others, just trying to find out if others have run into a similar issue with the Impreza Outback Sport.

I just remembered that at least Allstate used the VIN to price the policy, can't remember about Geico. That right there should alleviate the confusion on their part. I guess I'm just confused as to why a 2005 Impreza Outback Sport costs almost the same to insure as a 2015 WRX...

The insurance scriptures are called actuarial tables. They are perfect and infallible. They are the light and the way.

.
smh

so you don't want to know what other people are paying, just if they are paying what they'd describe is a "high" rate, which isn't defined in any way and could be $60 a month or $210/month since that's totally subjective?

yes, other people are paying for insurance too at various rates

I have a theory that 90% of these people are just here to be told their engine is blown.

It's like you lost a leg. They go to the doctor. The doctor diagnoses a missing leg.

I change my insurance at least every couple of years. Seems they penalize you for staying with one company. I can save a stupidly large amount of $ by bouncing between two companies.

You should probably ask a competent insurance agent. Location is everything and your statement that insurance companies don't assign a person to a vehicle must be a Texas thing. On my policy, each car has a P for primary driver and O for occasional driver. That's why MY 13 Crosstrek with my younger son driving it is $2200 as he's the P on it. I'm the P on my Wrangler so it's $295. If I put my son as the P on my Wrangler and me as the P on my 13 Crosstrek, wanna guess what the rates would become?

A good agent will tell you exactly why the car with your daughter driving is at a high rate. I have sons and have seen as each one gets their license a rate for one car triples immediately, if not more. Each has technically totaled a vehicle, so makes sense that the insurance company knows this. New drivers are a risk and they know it and charge for it.

I haven't had an Impreza Outback Sport, but heck, the Crosstrek is the modern version of the same car and I own 2 of them and they don't ring the car risk bell. The other one by the way is a 19 that I am the P for and I think it costs me maybe $600 or $700 a year. I'd have to look. My low cost comes because my last ticket was in 1987, I can't remember my last accident. Married, multi car discount, AAA member, low risk town, have homeowner and umbrella policies with the same agent and all the cars except that 13 Crosstrek get some kind of low mileage discount.
