Default Wireless network n00b needs guidance

I had a 802.11b Belkin router that needed to go. It was slow, and didn't have much coverage.

I live in a duplex and share the wireless connection with everyone in the house. So, after ditching the Belkin, I went out and purchased a Netgear RangeMax WPN824 MIMO router believing that I would actually get better coverage. (I even bought the dumb MIMO usb dongle) I was wrong. Of course, I'm on the second level, on the complete opposite side of the house from where the router is stationed. There is a set of stairs and a host of appliances between me and the router, so I don't get a very good connection.

What I would like to do is figure out how to boost the signal/range of the connection to not only to everyone in the house but also provide our nextdoor neighbors with wifi. How do you suggest I go about doing this? I've heard the Linksys WRT54G routers are quite customizable... so would I be able to achieve these results with a WRT54G and two 7dbi antennas attached to it?

I'm going to return the Netgear router and dongle, so I'll have a $200 budget for this project.

What do you suggest?

I have a Linksys WAP and the high gain antennas didn't do anything at all. Your best bet might be to install a WAP or a series of WAPs.

Do a little research on wireless routers that have optional high-gain antennas. Some company sells the antennas as an aftermarket thing and others sell different packages of the same router with the high gain antennas.

EDIT:$200 is not going to cut it for the high gain stuff. The base needs an omni-directional antennal and the clients need directional panel antennas. That's the setup that one of my friends is running to share a T1 with his neighbors in a rural area. The furthest connection is about 800" through a wooded area.

I was looking at this auction and it states you can modify the transmit power on the Linksys WRT54G... did you try that?

Most wireless routers have their transmit power set to the strongest level by default.

Holy crap... I'm not looking to serve wifi to the entire city... just the people in my house and neighbors. I'll keep that in mind, though!
