Default Is Beef Jerky bad for you?

I tried it for the first time like a year ago, and since then I get it all the time - I never expected dried out beef to be so damn yummy. Anyways, it looks ungodly bad for you, but is it really? I mean its super low in fat, decent amount of protein and is low in carbs. About the only thing that looks bad is the sodium, but even thats not super high. For a snack food would you consider it better or worse than chips or cookies?

Hazdaz, if you like Beef Jerky, you should definately try to get your hands on some Buffalo Jerky. It's better for you, and tastes way better... the only problem is finding it.

Much better than a candy bar or a bag of chips, IMO. I think you summed it up pretty nicely. The only thing bad about it is the sodium content.

Sunflower seeds are also a good snack.

Mother Nature has created a nutritional power pack that is hard to beat in sunflower seeds. Healthy unsaturated fats, protein and fiber, plus important nutrients like vitamin E, selenium, copper, zinc, folate, iron and phytochemicals come wrapped up in this small and perhaps unsuspected package – a sunflower seed.

If you have REAL beef jerky, then it's good for you. I make my own. It is just meat, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, wustashire sauce, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder. Nothing bad for you. Damn yummy.

I buy the no hormone/no antibiotics/no nitrates/MSG etc etc stuff from my local health food store, which, as mentioned, is just beef and flavoring. Nothing wrong with that. If you want the ultimate in healthfood search for grass fed beef online. It's 100% organic and the cows obviously eat grass rather than the crap normally given to cattle to fatten them up. It's really expensive though.

On the contrary... soy sauce is loaded with sodium. It's what gives jerky it's high sodium content.

Edit: and you're using salt to boot!

Dude that's about 7 ingredients too many for me to bother trying to make my own.

None the less, what's so bad about the super-market variety? This is how pathetic I am.. I have an empty package of Oberto and two packages of Jack Link's next to my computer just from the last week. These brands that bad? They taste decent.

As you pointed out, other than the sodium, there's nothing terribly bad about beef jerky.

Beef jerky is made from very lean cuts of meat (I start off with flank steak or round steak)... too much fat laced in there and the meat never dries and it stays kinda mushy. Basically, all you do is marinade it in a brine (everything but the kitchen sink can go in here, but Morton Tender Quick is always a staple as it cures the meat quickly) for a while, then dry the meat out in an oven, dehydrator, or smoker.

Look up some jerky recipies... they are seriously easy to make yourself.

I can't believe your first taste of jerky was last year There's all kind of jerky to try... buffalo (as was mentioned), venison, even turkey.

Right now is the best time... deer season has just begun and our sample platters at work are starting to show up. Just today a co-worker brought in a couple pieces from his last venison roast and a bunch of jalapino venison sausage. Next week we'll have some venison jerky and some beef jerky (I'm making the beef jerky).

Go in with a couple people on a whole cow... it's actually cheaper than supermarket beef and you know exactly how it was raised and what it was fed.

Every year my wife and I split a cow with her brother and her parents. Her brothers wife's family runs a farm and takes one out for slaughter each year. It gets split 4-ways... 1/4 to us, 1/4 to the in-laws, 1/4 to the brother-in-law, and the brother-in-laws family keeps a 1/4 for themselves. Costs each around $400 and we just about filled our 5.6 cu. ft. chest freezer with meat.

"About the same."

The sodium content is ridiculous.
Also most are bathed in various preservatives and stabilzers.
If you can find some local stuff minus the preservatives that would be marginally better.
It's generally not something you want to eat on any sort of basis though.

Best case scenario is making your own at home which then would not require as much salt (preservative) and have no additional mystery mess/chemicals added to it.

Read the label as all that you want to know is right there on the package.

- Janq loves jerky but eats a pack only two or three times per year

Homemade is unbelievable.........................

Man, I'm drooling just thinking about the batch my Mom made years and years ago before a road trip to Canada.

I think I may have to make a batch sometime soon.
