Default ECU's interchangeable?

I need a new ECU for my 04 wrx and I found another ecu from a 04 wrx can they be switched around even if the numbers don't exactly match?

Thanks
Mike

I had the same question for an 02 wrx and that ecu worked just fine. I was told the numbers didn't match because they were from different manufacturing dates and not because it was from a different year vehicle.

I have an 04 computer in my 2005 car. It should work fine. Granted mine is a different year computer, I don't see why a 2004 computer wouldn't work in your 2004 car.

Just make sure you don't end up getting a stolen ECU.

You can use any 02-05 ECU on any 02-05 WRX (provided the same transmission).

HOWEVER,

For example, 03 added a sensor the 02 didn't have. So an 03 ECU in an 02 with throw a CEL.

Same goes for the 05. Thus, an 05 ECU in an older car with run fine, but throw a CEL.

To be safe, run an ECU from your year, OR OLDER. Hoever, 04 ECU in an 04 or 03 will work.

Going along with the above post...

The ECU pinouts are available online. As an example a small piece of wire will jump out the 'PCV Diagnostic Sensor' that is in some +04 year models and defeat the associated CEL code.

OP--if you get that this point where to do swap ECU's just post up the code and an easy solution can be found.

It'd be nice to live in a world where making a 32bit ecu work in an 02-05 was as simple as having it tuned.

Significant wiring differences w/ the 32bit ecus.
