I think your trans should be put together the same way as a wrx.

Has anybody blown an r180 yet? If so, what were your hp/tq numbers?

I'm starting my rwd conversion and would like to know this too.

I have a friend that used to compete in Formula drift and he had started a his Subaru drift build http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2505747 and ended up going with the R200 and DSS 1200hp S14 axels. His advice was to go with the R180 and be done with it. The R180 should be able to hand ~350tq with out too much stress. If you want a 400+hp drift car then you might want to consider the R200.

As for axels he suggested, just using stock sti ones if you don't have the $$ for Driveshaftshop Level 5 axles. Even the STI axle will break when converted to rear drive, not as fast as the wrx axles, but they'll still break.

I'll be taking a bunch of pictures and install notes on the swap when I put everything in. I'll update this thread with a link to mine once I have all my parts (still need: wheels, rear STI hubs, R180, DSS STI level 5 Rear axles, and driveshaft).

Something else I find interesting though is that no one mentions tuning the engine after the conversion to RWD. Wouldn't that be a must considering the connected driveline is now completely different than prior to the conversion.

You dont need a tune, because nothing was done to the air, fuel, or ignition system.

good to know, just seemed that the engine may react differently now that the power is distributed differently, but guess not.

I'm planning a rwd build, but running N/A, so power numbers will be closer to 200 at the wheels. It's not going to be drifted (not on pavement at least), so at that power level, will the R160 and axle hold up? I am investigating an R180 swap, but I don't know if I'll have the cash to do it initially after spending the money on the cage and coilovers.

not my experiance but i remember reading about a guy with an OBS or L or something with teh 2.2 in it and it was stock and he was eating up diffs iirc...but he was drifting it too so that could be the deciding factor...hahahahaha

Haha you were right, but now I just bought my friends custom fabbed 35R turbo kit. So when ever I add that, I'll definitely need to get it tuned.

What gets me the most about searching RWD threads here is that, what a lot of the RWD conversion haters don't get is that, by converting to rwd you add more power without the need to upgrade the Trans gear set. I still love me some AWD, but if I wanted to do the same mods I want with AWD I would definitely need deeper pockets, since their are more components that would need to be beefed up.

Try it, then when they break hop over to the classifieds and pick up my R160 and stock axles.

I'd like to avoid breaking it at an event. That would cost a little bit more than just upgrading to what can handle it.

I welded mine. Works great all my gauges work... I am however scared of my rear end. Looking to beef it up

Is the R180 driftable in stock form or should it be welded? As to the r160 guys, weld it. It is annoying in parking lots, tight turns but I have had my center and rear diff welded for about a year and half. No issues except axles and my stupidity. I am about to swap to r180 and dss conversion axles and find the next weak link.

I'm running an r180 with the dss axels and thier carbon drive shaft awell Drifts great hold power of my build 2.5 n/a just fine. My only advice try to avoid the torsen diff. I find it to lock weird in none drift driving plus if you lift a rear tire they work like a open diffhttps://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi...user=504904400https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi...user=504904400

As for the r160 I found a trick to make them hold up to the abuse of drifting well Take a shim or two out of the bearing carries in the diff and run the very tight. With a super heavy oil to help with heat I was useing this set up for 4 month and it worked great only issue was stock r160s stub shafts are the weakest link in the stock set up

One other thing I'm not seeing people address here is steering angle. Awd have a low stering angle vs rwd and less steering angle mean less drift angle. What I did. Was drill me hole further in on the cast knuckle The used an old tie rod end I modded to machine the bevel to mate with the tie rod end https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi...user=504904400

Stoked about this thread. Happy to know I'm not the only crazy one with a rwd subi. Anyways, my motor is shot so I'm building a ej205 with just a vf39, should I even bother going r200? Or just stick to the r180? A company called tssfab makes custom rear sub frams for subies and can fab one to hold the r200. But the down side is its going to cost a whole lot more. I do plan on drifting the crap out of it lol. Just looking for some input on what I should do. Thanks

Can't say for sure if the r180 will be ok but I don't see it failing unless you planning on makings er 350whp or more more likely your axels will fail first befor your diff.
