Default AEM WMI V2 in GR Install

Thought I'd just share my install for the AEM Water/Meth kit in my 2014 STI Hatch to help people out if anyone has any questions.

I had to extend wires to route everything to its final location.

Tapped and installed the nozzle under the TMIC just before the throttle body. I replaced the rear fitting on the nozzle with a 90 degree one to make it fit in that location. Decided to wrap the hose from the firewall to the nozzle is the DEI Heath Sheath just to prevent it from getting too hot and melting.



I cut out a section of foam in the rear and mounted the pump in there. It's a snug fit so it doesn't move around. Added some heavy duty Velcro to the bottom of that for added stability. Top cover goes on flush.



Since I use my hatch often to move a lot of heavy stuff I wanted to add some protection to the tank/nozzle/wiring so I had this aluminum box made up. It's not pretty but it works.





While researching some threads on installs everyone mentioned installing the controller in the glove box. I checked the glove box and there was absolutely no room to mount it anywhere that won't get in the way. It needed to go somewhere that it was out of the way and can't be accidentally adjusted but still be accessible if need be.

Noticed that the side of the passenger side dash had a ton of room and the cover can be easily removed. Running the harness to this location was super easy as well because it was close to the firewall grommet and the floor.



With the cover on.



All the wires and lines were run down the floor tunnel by the bottom of the doors. There was plenty of room. I extended the wires to the secondary LED and ran them to the cluster. I have the LED just sitting on the side and it's visible enough when the kit starts spraying. I may try to find a different location for this but for now I like it where it is.

Next up is to tune for it. I have a GrimmSpeed EBCS that I will be installing when I tune and will wire up the failsafe to that. As soon as I get all that wired in I will post up the wiring diagram and relay.

are you doing the aem failsafe gauge? keep going between this and hfs3. still several months from committing but gotta do the research first.

Not as of right now. I'll be running the boost safe trigger to the EBCS. I've been talking to Eric at TP and it seems there are a couple of tuning fail safes we can put in place to make it even safer. I'll see how this does and maybe I'll add more failsafes next year.

After talking with my tuner I decided to order the AEM Failsafe gauge as well. The plan is to wire in the signal wires from the gauge into one of the TGV sensors and use it to switch maps in the case of a failure/error. It will be similar to the way Cobb's Flex Fuel runs. Gauge should be here in the next few days and I'll wire that in.

Hopefully there are no issues with the sensor as I've been reading up on some DOA units.

wow awesome install! now i know where to mount my stuff when i finally get around to installing my V2 kit

how long does that 1 gallon tank last you for daily driving? just ball park average... are you filling it up every gas tank? twice every gas tank? once every two gas tanks?

Thanks! I find this is the cleanest install location and you have access to everything you need still.

I'm not 100% sure actually. It took some time for my failsafe gauge to come in and a little bit longer for me to install it. I ended up pulling all the WMI lines out of the engine bay and combining them with the failsafe gauge to make it a bit cleaner and not have a bunch of wires running through the engine bay.

Funny thing about the gauge, when I installed it and started to set the high/low parameters, I was noticing a 250cc/min difference between the nozzle size and flow rate. After contacting AEM they have confirmed that the gauge/flow meter were not properly calibrated from factory meaning they were "DOA". I had to send both back for them to inspect, repair, or replace. I have yet to start tuning for it and it's a little bit frustrating.

I did have the kit running before the gauge was installed, and a little bit afterwards for setting up the gauge, and it didn't use a whole lot of solution. Since you would only be spraying while in boost (mine is set to turn on at 7psi and full spray at 14psi) it would all depend on how hard you drive the car.

Hopefully I'll have the gauge back soon and I can update this with more photos and results.

im automatic so 80% of the time im not under boost. i have nightmares of not having enough fluid for long trips lol. but i forget the complexity of these new units and when they turn on/off. i can travel 300kms on highway and never hit any real boost and thus never have the system turn on.

Bit of an update. Got the gauge back from AEM and have started tuning with Eric. The gauge is still having the same flow issues even though it was "fixed". During logging the 1000cc/min nozzle was showing anywhere between 12500cc/min and 1400cc/min. Not really sure what is going on there.

The flow/failsafe gauge is currently installed in my glove box as I didn't have another gauge mount. I have the 0-5V sensor outputs from the gauge hooked up to my passenger side TGV input. This allows Eric to see exactly how much flow there is with the different boost pressures and can trigger a map switch should the flow stop or if the failsafe triggers. It also allows me to monitor flow rates with my V3 accessport.

The larger nozzle was causing me to go through meth QUICK. After five 4th gear pulls the car used up 1/3rd of the 1gal tank. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the nozzle showing the higher flow rate but I will be switching to the 500cc/min nozzle tonight and tuning again. Hopefully that saves me from having to fill up my tank after a couple minutes of WOT.

Will get some photos of everything installed soon.

Precisely, you won't be using any methanol if you're not in your target boost rage. I figure a tank could last me months with the way I drive, however, if I calculate based on flow rate, I would be able to get about 3-3.5 minutes at WOT out of one tank with the largest nozzle. Double that once I switch to the 500cc/min nozzle.

Have you actually measured the flow into a empty container & compared it to the gauge's flow rate? (Stick nozzle in jug & turn on for one minute & measure?)

Maybe your pump is turned up crazy high, should be a screw on the bottom to adjust pump pressure)

I have a 2gal tank, 2 x.8mm nozzles & only refill every few months???

I have not tested it yet but that's what AEM recommended I do. I have a feeling the pump is spraying higher than 200psi. I've swapped in the smaller nozzle and it seems to be spraying pretty close to what it is rated for...on the gauge anyways. Doesn't seem to be using up as much mix this time around. I'll try to test it this weekend.

There's a reset procedure (for my aquamist pump, probably same as yours), where you turn the Allen screw on the bottom until it clicks, then back off a certain number of turns.

I don't remember how many turns. I bought my system used, so I did the reset, but, when I measured the actual flow-it was still to high.

I had to back mine off some to get the correct measured "free air" flow I calculated the engine needed.

(I put the nozzles in a empty jug, ran for one min, then used a mason jar to measure it-not the most precise way to measure, but it's close enough)

Looks like I forgot to post my reply to this before. Ooops.

Good to know. I switched out the nozzles to the 500cc/min and it's showing that it's running at 600cc/min, which is fine. Finished tuning with Eric last weekend and just letting the map learn values now. Since I don't have a dyno to test on these number's are just based on the virtual dyno.

Picked up and extra 30whp and 49lbft between the non meth and meth map. This is on 91 ACN gas.



Will run another couple of logs once I hit 200 miles on this map.

Just want to add to Nurp's thread for any other people doing this to a GR car.










So for the wiring I am going to set it up that when I turn on meth, the ECU will map switch automatically to the meth map thanks to Cobbs flex fuel add on. The ecu will see 5v when the meth is turned on, making it think there is 100% ethanol in the fuel. With this functionality I can also incorporate AEM's failsafe so that if there is any issue it will map switch to the straight pump gas map. All you need is 2 relays to accomplish this with AEM's Boost Safe wire. 5v will be coming from the TGV power connector.

Hi there.
I'm about to install my AEM kit in my 2011 sti. I just saw your post and your install is great. Can you please give more information about the 90º fitting that you used with the nozzle. I just don't know which one to get. And also, did you tapped the fitting in the nozzle body ?

It’s just a regular brass 90 elbow with a threaded side and push connect side. I think it’s 1/8th npt but it’s been so long, I don’t remember. I picked it up at a place that sells ptfe tube and air lines. You remove the push connect adapter off the nozzle and replace with the 90.

The nozzle is tapped into the intercooler.
