Same problem I had , ended up getting new ignition switch and starter
Didn’t have a problem after that
But today took rexxy out and she lost all power on the highway going about 85
So who knows I’d try that starter first and see what happens ..

Issue: turn key, nothing happens, car doesn't start, starter won't click or anything.

Backstory:

Car began having issues starting, I had to turn the key 5-10 times, then 10-15 times as it got worse. However once it caught the car would fire to life instantly.
-My mechanic/friend swapped the starter with a used one that a friend had.
-After swapping starter the car still had issues catching. Sometimes it would crank for 10-15 seconds before finally starting. Sometimes it would start quickly but was a very weak start.
-The other day I went to start it and the starter began to crank and then died. Now I get nothing (yes I tried hitting it, didn't help).

I was told this could be an issue with the ignition switch, which sort of makes sense since the old starter would always turn right over once it finally caught. I would simply swap the old starter (or maybe not so simply, depending on how easy that is) but it is at my mechanic's and he dropped it off somewhere to be tested/rebuilt if needed. My mechanic isn't anywhere nearby, so he can't really come check it out.

Is this more likely the ignition switch or the starter? I'm fairly confident that I could swap either one myself, but I don't want to just go start pulling stuff apart needlessly. Can the ignition switch itself be swapped, or does the entire ignition cylinder need to be replaced?

Any help is appreciated.
Do your dashlights turn on when you turn the key?

you can test the starter alone just touch a screwdriver across the power and solenoid and see if it starts. If it does the problem would be upstream.

Had to do this on an f150 because some transmission sensor was stopping the ignition process.

1993 Impreza (USDM)

Anyways having the same fun.

Pulled code 21 - Coolant Temperature Sensor Fault

Car has a really hard time turning over after sitting hours. I'm at the 5-6 tries stage right now and my CEL has finally stayed on for a day so I can pull it. Usually it comes on when cold for a min, then goes away.

Been starting super rough on cold starts, no joke, could be down to 50~60 rpms - we're talking dash light, radio playing, and what almost sounds like back fires inside the motor.
I know coolant disappears, could be a leaking head gasket. Maybe the cylinder(s) are filling with water.
I need to check the plugs too to make sure none are 'flooded' with coolant.

I'll start digging more and update for others in the future.

Cheers

Default What if no engine lights, no fuel pump, no start on cool mornings?

Hi - I found this thread and it seems very similar to what is happening to my daughters 2002 WRX. However, in her case, on cold'ish mornings of 40 degrees F or lower, when you turn the key to on, no dash CEL illuminate and her rather loud fuel pump definitely does not kick on like normal. Then, when the temp warms up, we go back out to the car and it fires up no problem at all.

This morning it was 44 F and it did it's mystical thing, turn the key and no dash CEL, no fuel pump, and no starter. The chime works when key is initially put into the ignition and the hazard lights work fine too. But no matter how many times I take the key out and put it back in, it does not turn on the check engine lights, fuel pump, or activate the starter.

Now it is 68 F and I went out and when I turn the key to on, the CEL illuminate, fuel pump can clearly be heard clicking on/humming, and when I turn the key, the car instantly starts. Turned if off and back on again 3 times and it works perfect.

I put a brand new battery in it last week and I tested voltage this morning and it was completely normal so the battery is fine. We have never had this problem all summer, only since the temps have been getting into the 40's and 30's at night.

It has done this same exact pattern for a week now and it is really frustrating because it works perfectly once it is warmer, just not at 5am when it's cooler and she is leaving for swim team practice.

Is this likely an ignition switch issue? Can ignition switches act weird like this when it is getting cooler out? Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your help.

Relays can also act odd with temperature changes. Although it's usually when they're hot, but I wouldn't rule it out completely. Since your symptoms are no CEL/fuel/starter, I'd start with the main relay...but I don't know where they are on an 02 WRX. Either right hand side of the dash or way back behind the left side on the firewall.
