Crazy full circle story. Many years ago, a couple young boys visited their grandfather in Alaska one summer. I was close friends with their grandfather, he was a fellow motorcyclist and gear head. He brought them out to several auto crosses where I was competing back in the day in the XP class against the Carter boys. Competition was fierce in those days between their 555 Blue and Gold rally car and my Underground Performance sponsored Black bugeye.

The boys helped their grandfather put the race rubber on my car while I attended the driver's meeting. I took them on track walks and ride alongs were allowed. They were absolutely thrilled to be in the car doing the full tilt boogie. We did that together every few weeks at the summer autocross series. It was a great experience for them, listening in, meeting other racers, learning the physics, course set up, car maintenance and driving performance. We were a team and it eventually paid off with a win in the XP championship that year, as well as a Fast Time of the Day award against Ryan's GTR, which usually dominated events at that time.

Time marches on.

After completing my PA program, I moved back to Florida, my family in tow. It has been a good move...we have a very good life here. The Black WRX has undergone further transformations, it competed down here in the sunshine state in many HPDE and auto crosses. We held our own against many and on most occasions, the only vehicles that bested our lap times arrived and left on race trailers. Not bad for a nearly 20 year old daily driver.

My now 18 year old son has been driving the car the last two years while going to high school. Sharing this car with him and working on it has been a treat, as it was purchased new 2-3 weeks before he was born. It has been such a rich part of our lives for so many years...but the time has come. Luke is about to graduate highschool. He is a budding Amateur motorcycle racing champion here in the southeast in off road motorcycle racing. He now has a Toyota Tacoma to carry his KTM around. Not much use for an aging WRX.

I kept up with those two boys at the beginning of the story. Both joined the military, following their grandfather and parents service to our country. Aidan is a Army Paratrooper. He has served in Europe and at the Syrian border. He just made sergeant and is about to be stationed back in Alaska. He has been after me to sell him the WRX all these many years. The time has come. Childhood dreams realized.

Soon, he will take over ownership and have the military move the vehicle back to Alaska, where It all began. I hope that some of the old crew will welcome him back and help keep the car's legacy moving forward. Thanks for listening.

Well, I guess I spoke too soon and counted chickens before they hatched. The 20 something year old kid found out the insurance costs were going to be too much for his limited budget, so he backed out of the deal. A shame really that these once great cars are relegated to unaffordable to own to a segment of the population not due to operating costs but to insurance costs.

No worries. I will keep the car circulating with our other vehicles as a commuter/fun car. We live in the country surrounded by farms. One of the reasons for wanting to sell it was that the car sat for a while before Luke started driving it and field mice had a good gnaw on my JDM HID wiring harness. We got that issue resolved but I was afraid of that happening again if the car sat for an extended length of time.

It was interesting using objective insight watching my internal barometer as the young man's departure date (and car purchase) loomed. I began looking at the vehicle with soft eyes again, getting all misty looking through the extensive records of invoices since day one. No loss , no harm, no foul.

Drove it in to work every day this last week, just hit 200500 miles.

Well, I am about to be back up for a spell. My daughter is getting hitched and asked me to give her away. We've been gone 7.5 years. Hoping to see some OG's.

That is a wonderful reason to come up and visit!

You can count this OG in for meeting up, although it'll have to happen in your neck of the woods.

Still popping in occasionally. Still in Stavanger, Norway, think I am a lifer here now... Still got my 2016 Citroen Cactus, 1.2 liters of turbo charged three cylinder fury!

Just did a solo 2000 km roadtrip to Sweden and back for the hell of it... Stopped in at the Båstnäs Car Cemetery along with a ton of other things. Since all of you are car nuts I will assume you all have heard of Båstnäs, but I will put a link to it too. Need to go back in summer when there is more daylight, I arrived just a few hours before sundown and had to drive out on 20 km of unknown narrow one lane gravel roads in the dark!

Aaayyyyeeee. Good to see ya! I still got the Converse you sold me before you left. Lol I'm hoping to snag a 2023 GR Corolla if all the specs are right: AWD, 6-speed manual, hatchback, and 1.6 liters of turbocharged, D4-S fury!

Thanks for the update. Glad you're feeling at home over there. I think about moving to Europe from time to time. I'm not tied down yet, so who knows. Anyway, stay safe!

Awesome! I was just thinking of those shoes the other day! Europe is OK, but it's not home. But the healthcare is nice. I had some issues in September and total out of pocket was like $30 for what could have been $30000 back home, and then worrying how much or if insurance will cover it! I am considering a Tesla Model S here now, super popular in Norway but the little Citroen just keeps on ticking and is fully paid off. So... you know.

It was very good to see you as well my young brocephus. I'm planning to do it again next year. Although it was late in the summer, and our focus was Nichole's wedding...and that turned into quite the "adventure", It really made me realize how much I'd missed Alaska and it's people for the last 7 plus years. I am determined to get out of too hot to do anything but swim summers in Florida, and use that time to get up north for some R&R.

Me and a group of motorcyclists are in planning stages for a Dust to Dawson run as the summer solstice approaches. let me know if you are interested.

Much the same as this.

Missed Nomadgene when down in his neck of the woods, but got to meet up over a couple beers with Tribal.

Found this for 2001 120k for $1400, its doing a great job of tiding me over until used cars come back down to sane prices. Say hello to my friend in the passenger seat, browsing insta while I take pics.
