I am hoping something was lost in translation via my wife, from the mechanic.
Good point!

The local dealer is living up to its poor Service rep. My wife is dragging her feet on making the longer drive to the better Service dealer.
Its her car so I figure its her choice.

The dealership makes all the difference. Mine, Bill Bryan Subaru are as bad as they come. Sleazy, rude, lying idiots. Id rather drive a Fiesta from a friendly Ford dealer than a Subaru from a crappy dealer. Sucks when you buy local and have to drive over an hour for factory service or warranty work. Soa wont answer my questions, they give me what are, effectively, non-answers.

Did your dealership follow up with you after you got the car?

No not really. They have had three managers come and go since dec 24 when I bought the car. The salesman is no longer there. The only one whos a constant presence is the despicable service manager. He is aweful. Just pitiful. They poured oil all over my car at the first oil change, etc. Aweful people. I have a meeting with the executive manager of the Bill Bryan line of dealerships tonight. I'll poat what happens in a new thread, possibly.

Sounds like a $hitty dealership with such a high turnover rate, sadly my dealership hasn't followed up with me since I got the car. I was expecting/hoping they would call not that it really matters anyways though.

What really orks me is that SOA wants me to drive an hour and a half to the next dealer through Orlando traffic and go to another dealer. But SOA is very adept at dodging questions and giving non-answers. I asked if my free maintenance would be honored at another dealer. Still awaiting response. Never did get anything from them about oil capacity. It really just took calling the bbb, but I still have to wait n see what the results are from this stay at the dealer. In the meantime, I've got a mbp sedan base model as a loaner.

I only have 500 miles on the car now & this has happened to me 3 times already. The first time it will not turn over after an elongated time of turning the key. The 2nd time it finally turns over after turning the key longer than normal. If this keeps happening I'll bring it to the dealer, I won't be putting any fuel cleaners in a brand new car.

Like I've said- a look at the Ford Pinto battery and terminal wiring isn't very confidence-inspiring. As soon as its out of warranty (not that the Subaru has much of one) I'm putting a good, sealed type of battery and rewiring.

Having owned a WRX for the better part of a decade, I was prepared for the fuel pump priming issue. Out of habit, I turn the key to ON (past ACC), wait for the needles to settle down, then wait a second longer, then crank.

It has been starting every time within two seconds. Entirely within the range of the WRX for 9 years.

All tanks standard 87 octane Union 76 or Chevron.

Temperature ranges have been between 20 degrees at the low end to 90 degrees at the high end.

Elevations have ranged from below sea-level to 10,000 feet / 3,000 meters.

Premium hatch, CVT.
____________

What this means is open for debate, but at the least it means that the problem doesn't effect ALL 2012 Imprezas.

It's weird there are a variety of seeming causes for this problem, and very few (though still enough) people experiencing it. At the risk of reviving a potentially old but interesting thread, or mentioning what is already common knowledge, I'll add what I read on page 3-4 of the manual, namely that in some situations the key won't start the car if another transponder key is near it, or if a normal metal key is munked up on your key-chain, thereby touching your ignition key, and presumedly grounding it. I jump in just to suggest to those having an intermittent issue that it could even just be this simple thing.

I have a similar problem with my 2005 STi. I've gotten into the habit of waiting for the gauge sweep to finish before starting the car. My 2012 Impreza will always start if I wait for the gauge sweep to finish. However the remote starter pretty much fails on the first try. I have to click the remote a 2nd time to succeed.

That's been mentioned as a fix for a lot of folks: to "prime" the system by letting it, well, boot-up?

I noticed earlier this week, (because it did it again) that it was very humid and about 75°F. Only took two times to start, both times waiting for the gauge sweep / prime. I also noticed the next day, that when I started it, it made a funny groaning noise when it fired up, almost like the a/c compressor clutch was slipping. (A/C off and defrost off, btw)

On an Accord I owned a sound like you described used to mean that the battery is close to it's end of life or is seriously under-charged.

Hi guys,

I just have gotten a new 2013 base impreza and have had this problem. It has been 2 weeks with the car and I have had it not start about 10 times. At most it would try 2 times and then start.

It doesn't matter if it is hot, cold, if it was just driven, etc.

I have tried the wait on ON before starting the motor and it doesn't work sometimes.

Has anyone received a solution? I took it to my dealer and they checked the computer...no codes, checked the charge of the battery....everything ok, and couldn't reproduce the problem.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Hello there,

I have had the starting issue twice. Once after taking it to a "do it yourself car wash". It took me like 6 tries to get her going. I took her to the same car wash a month later and there were no issues on the second time. The other one was one cold morning (30º F) it took me two tries. Very annoying considering I never had any of those issues with my previous 1995 Jetta.

Had the same problem happen to me; the second time was this morning. It cranked over fine, but wouldn't start. I waited about a minute and tried again, but it wasn't going to start.... so I floored the gas pedal and held it down and it fired up finally. I wonder if it has anything to do with the security system not recognising the key as your trying to start her?

This has happened to me once. I think it was due to me not letting the fuel pump finish doing it's thing before I turned the key forward.

Its happened to me as well awhile ago. Took 2 attempts. Was 6pm and not freezing out or anything.

A couple times it will start but the rpms are super low and it sounds like it wants to go back into slumber. Then all of a sudden it will shoot to 2000rpm without me touching anything. I think this has only happened on cold mornings, 6am.

I just caress the steering wheel and say "i know baby, i know..."

Just an update. My car is now doing this thing where it will crank, sound like its going to fire, so I let off the key, and then sputter and die. I've had this happen three times this week now. It also is very slow to crank in the mornings, as if there is no oil in the engine causing a ton of drag. there is of course oil, and it was changed last Saturday at the dealer. I'm waiting for this car to blow up, and then I'm driving to my nearest Toyota dealer to get back into a Tundra, lol.

I have had this issue a few times now. Then I remembered I had the exact same issue with my Honda when I first got it. It has to do with how I put the key in the ignition I think. I have a tendency to jam it in and turn immediately. Now that I am more aware of it, I havent had it happen.

I have noticed that my Sport will crank like the battery is low at times. It just seems sluggish. It has never not started. I wonder if low voltage is causing this issue. On some of the older Bosch injected cars if the voltage dropped a little below 12 volts the car would NOT start. It would crank all day without firing. My Alfa Romeo 164S had a (no kidding) truck and bus battery to keep this from happening. If you cheaped out and put a crappy small battery in you would be hit and miss on starting success.
Our batteries don't look as though they are the best of quality. I have been thinking about just going ahead and replacing the OE batt with an optima one.
Just some thoughts.
