If anyone is really cheap and has access to nuts/bolts, you can save some cash. Find a bolt head that fits in the torx head, screw on 2 nuts (tight against each other) and use the nut closer to the bolt head to back out the plug. It won't back off because of the 2nd nut. I haven't changed my fluid yet, but i did this on my S-10. Works great.

Or like what someone else said, go buy the older socket style plug for the tranny then you won't have to worry about it...

so i picked up a t70 for 7 bucks at a small random shop. but thats not why im posting.
all i ever hurd is t70 torx bit is to flush the transmission fluid.
so i went to "advance auto" and asked them to look up what kind of fluid i will need and how much (cause people love to guess with fluids). he showed me the weight and how much im going to need of it (i think it was 4.9 quarts).

so a week later i decided to change the transmission fluid and i wanted to comfirm how much im going to need. i asked my boss to call o'reilly auto parts cause we do alot of business with them. they told him 9 quarts. (it didnt seem right)

he said he will call subaru(we also do business with them) subaru said the transmision needs 9 quarts.

that was pissing me off cause
advance auto said 4.9 quarts
o'reilly said 9 quarts
subaru said 9 quarts
and i looked it up on this forum and i also saw less then 9 quarts in the transmission.

so being pissed off i had to search again and found out theirs 2 drain plugs to drain the transmission fluid

so have half of my transmission fluid is clean royal purple and the other half is dirty im guessing subaru transmission fluid (im not sure). im scared cause i was told not to mix 2 different types of fluid cause the type of stuff they put in them might cause one of them to fail quicker. .

so please pass it on the t70 torx bit isnt the only bolt you need to take off to fully drain the transmission.

If its not 1/2 inch drive it will probably fail. Its no fun when it breaks in the middle of the job and you can't drive your car.

I cant see it failing. Its a 1/2" drive. And all I use it for it the drain plug on the tranny. I don't foresee it breaking. Even if it were 3/8. Its a nice bit for 2.99.

Default 2012 wrx transmission

Ok since this in the transmission post kind of. I'll ask this here.

I recently went to the dealership to get my 4 quarts of high performance gear oil and 1 extra for the rear differential so 5 total and got the transmission oil drain bold crush washer. Ok so my biggest question is, why did the service adviser give me what looks like the same crush washer thats used for the engine oil drain bolt? Do or can you also use the same aluminum crush washer for the transmission aswell? They claimed you could...

I havent changed my transmission fluid yet.

They gave you the wrong washer. The one on the transmission is more like a thicker fiber washer. You could possibly reuse the washer but don't use the one designed for the oil pan because the bolt is bigger on the transmission. This is the one you want http://www.fastwrx.com/products/suba...in-plug-gasket

Ah see there we go. Clarification. Thank you very much for this.

The dude talking to me was confusing the hell out of me. I KNOW what i came in there for. I went in there told them i have a 2012 wrx sedan and told him i need 5 quarts of the high performance gear oil 75-90, 1 for the differential and 4 for the transmission. Well 3.7..

He then for some reason insisted that i buy 6 of them cause the tranny takes like "5 quarts. And "its what we give the techs" same with the crush washer. Im thinking, this goes to the engine oil drain bolt. He's like "yeah same as the tranny"...smh...

He must've thought i had an sti or something. Dude was all the way all kinds of wrong.

Itll be the first time doing this tranny service so i wanted to atleast make sure of the washer that goes onto the tranny bolt. So im strongly assuming if i dont go back to the dealership to get a new washer that i could reuse the same stock crush washer. The dealership is like 1 hour away.

Yeah happened to me as well when I did my gearbox change. The 5 quarts is for a fully dry gearbox. When I changed my oil all I had to use was 3 full quarts and just about half of the fourth one and reused the gasket and it has done fine for me so far.

Yeah well it makes more sense about the 5 quarts and a totally dry empty gearbox. What are the odds that someone would need 5? Cause the manual says 3.7. I suppose if the transmission was brand new never used.

Yeah its the first time changing it so that gasket should atleast be able to be reused atleast once.

Atleast i have another extra engine oil drain bolt washer.

Oh i wanted to ask. Should it JUST be 3.5-3.7 quarts or could someone use all 4 quarts?

Cause when i do my engine i just use all 5 quarts. I know the transmission might be a bit more picky or needed to be more careful.

Yeah the transmission is more picky for being over filled. Because it's a splash oiling system and won't change gear correctly if overfilled. If overfilled the gear change will be more sluggish getting into gear. And the OK zone on the dipstick is fairly generous so put 3.5 in and let it settle then check it and add more till you are happy and it will be perfect to run.
