Quieter Exhaust? Add Resonator?
Hi, I have a 02 bugeye, 3" after market exhaust invidia and ELHeaders, Just trying to get quieter without sacraficing flow/preformance, basically gonna add some resonators my questions are
1. What size and brand of resonators have you tried 2. Did you wish you put in 2 of them 3. Did it quiet the noise like you hoped 4. Any Suggestions And no I dont want a high flow cat (sleeved motor gtx3076r) |

Have you thought about the butterfly valve technology used in the dynomax VF quiet series mufflers? It basically stays almost shut at idle and is opened up by the exhaust pressure. I'd love to see someone make a DIY version of that, but those are inside the muffler not the exhaust pipe itself. I was thinking on buying a cheap $100 eBay catback and that Dynomax VF muffler and having the VF muffler welded up. Just not sure how long those eBay special exhausts last before they rust or pop welds.

I had Invidia N1 on my 08, added a GtSpec ELH. then later wanted to quiet it down a bit added a Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator. was very pleased with the Results.
http://vibrantperformance.com/catalo...products_id=47 they can be had for $80-$85 and it killed the drone and quieted it down a bit without sacrificing any flow |

Do you think 'Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator' will fit into 2015 WRX?
I like how it is with stock muffler, but my wife does not like the base sound at around 2,000 rpm when I'm cruising. |

ive had the dynomax vt on my car. worked ok until i couldnt stand the flap rattling anymore so i cut open the exhaust and welded the arm to stay open. then the car got louder as the muffler got older. changed to a vibrant 1119 muffler and vibrant 17950 resonator. so much happier i changed it.
old setup: lots of rasp and high pitched no resonator with equal length header new setup: no rasp and deeper tone vibrant resonator and muffler with equal length and here is what im talking about with the rattle (older header setup too): unmodified dynomax vt with unequal length header |

20WRX, thank you very much for that info. I suspected the VF might do that but after reading that I'm gonna look elsewhere. So how much did this muffler and resonatpor cost you? I have a no name eBay 3" catback that I want to chop and replace the mufflermon. Not looking to spend more than $150 on muffler though. I'm also looking for the quitest possible 3" muffler without making it too bad of a choke point in the exhaust.

OK, I just heard both clips. You're absolutely right. That Dynomax rattle is just awful. The other setup sounds rather nice. I'd like something with a nice low growl. The packing is getting blown out of this eBay muffler so something's gotta replace it before I install it. This would be going on a bugeye wrx fwiw.

I wonder if just adding that Vibrant resonator to this N1 style half blown out eBay muffler would be enough to keep it from sounding horrible...

^^^^ I can't see why not. I have two of them under my car before my big muffler. theres bound to be room under yours. I'd buy one and jack your car up to look to see if one really does fit or not before cutting and welding one in.

I removed the Resonator on my '76 BMW 2002. It's got it's ups and downs. The thing sounds savage, and I love the sound around town, but it sounds like a civic when WOT. Makes sense given they're both inline 4's.

Sure did
I just finished my exhaust on my 02 bugeye.Heres what's it now has,EBay header, jones exhaust resonator (18")and a Magna flow muffler and the new pipe is 2.1/4 all the back. Its loud for sure I think one more resonator would be good.I will say it sounds like a beast!!!!!
I had Jesuss Muffler in Tacoma Wa do the work. They did a great job and the price was really good. With the muffler and resonator I bought they charged me $120.00 to install my parts and run new pipe. Quote:

I bought a Vehicle Adaptive Exhaust Valve that is in some of the newer turbo'd and ecoboost vehicles to keep the rumble down at idle and low RPM. I haven't spliced it in yet, though.

Bringing back an older thread but I thought it might be worthless to start another thread about exhaust...
Does anyone know what I could expect for DB reduction installing a resonator like this? My Blitz exhaust is too loud for my taste. I don't want to waste $20 on a silencer that doesn't do much and I sure don't want to cut up a fine exhaust and drop $200 on parts and labor if a resonator isn't going to help either. |

wagon / hatch or sedan? IMHO, wagons drone worse because the tailgate and the spare tire well (and the rear vents) are in the same airspace as your ears. You can treat for it and cut the drone quite a bit. I'd imagine it would be effective, but less so, on a sedan.
Also, FWIW, I had an n1 catted and catless and that was pretty droney regardless. I have a q300 with a cat now and it's fairly civilized. |

I am running an ETS j-pipe on my 2015 wrx paired with a q300. Just had a Vibrant Ultra Quiet welded on and i'd have to say that although it hasn't toned it down much on DD city driving, it's taken care of the awful highway drone. Higher RPMs has also mellowed out as well make it a much more comfortable drive.

I have a 3" maddad whisper on a bugeye wagon (207 uel headers) w/catted stromung midpipe, catless stromung dp. It drones way too much on the highway and is slightly louder than desirable at cold idle.
I'll be swapping to EL twin scroll and adding a helmholtz resonator for the drone. You can make one or see this product (http://my.prostreetonline.com/2014/0...ne-resonators/) If that's not quiet enough will also add an oval straight through resonator and matt the wagon back. |
