2007 STI motor in 2012 chasis
Good morning all. I hope everyone is having a good day.
I wasn't sure if this was the right spot for this discussion so feel free to move me to a more appropriate thread if it's not. Here's the situation: I currently have a 2002 WRX that has a thrown rod. Everything in the engine bay has been swapped from a 2007 STI except the heads. The transmission is the stock 02 case built with PPG gears. However, this car started its life on the east coast and the chassis has quite a bit of rust so I am looking for a new home for the motor and tranny I am at the point where the motor is pulled and I'm preparing to have the motor rebuilt. Out here in CO, it's become quite hard to find a 2002-2005 WRX (sedan, there's a ton of hatches available but it's not what I'm looking for). This morning while searching through craigslist I came across a 2012 WRX. This particular WRX has developed rod knock so the owner is letting it go for a price that hards to ignore. This brings me to the question at hand. Is it possible to swap my WRX motor into this chassis? For all intents and purposes, the question is swapping an 07 STI motor into a 2012 WRX (and potentially the tranny, though its a minor concern)? I am sure it can be done, but really the questions are: What parts are not compatible? what needs to stay from 2012 and what needs to come from 2007? What are the potential concerns/struggles that may come about in this swap? In general, I guess I'm wondering if a swap like this would just amount to be too much of a headache? I really miss my WRX and in some ways, I may be reaching just cuz I want my car back. I wholeheartedly will be ready to take your guy's advice on this situation and would easily just force myself to have a little more patients in finding the right car to swap this stuff into if it turns out that this swap is too much trouble. I wanna thank everyone in advance for any and all advice/info.

All mechanical parts are compatible, there will likely be a lot of electrical plugs that are not compatible and will need to be rewired. With proper wiring this swap is easily possible- that will be the most difficult part of the swap.
If you keep the '02 trans with PPG gears there is no worry about the FD ratio's being mixed up. |

Wiring is one thing I hate messing with so I will probably keep away!
Thanks for the info! |
