They filed for bankruptcy because the Garrett Motion split from Honeywell put a MASSIVE brakepad/asbestos/cancer settlement($1.3Billion or so) on them, which despite being profitable, Garrett could not repay.

Mind you, this stems from a settlement that existed before Honeywell took over Garret Motion, but was offloaded on them when they split in 2018.
