Still don't feel comfortable going out and playing one of the busy courses around here and getting paired up with random people (who may/may not be taking the current situation seriously). But there's a crappy course I used to play a league in that doesn't get much play and my wife and I might wander over there at some point soon.

Probably gonna get the net/hitting mat out later today. I've just been using hard foam balls so I don't send a real ball into the drywall.

Since I flattened my swing and changed my set up a few years ago it's resulted is some bad pulls, especially if my swing is too quick. The closed club face results in really low ball flight too, so a higher flight would be very welcome. I've also switched back to the PINGs and am standing closer to the ball. YEah, lots of changes.

I've seen some decent results the past week and am going to work on it at the range again tomorrow. I played Sunday and last night, shot 86 at my course and 84 at my buddies last night (its about 300 yards shorter). Progress.

My tweaks and practice seem to be paying off and I am really pleased. Shot 82 and 81 this weekend. I'm striking the ball really well and my approaches are so much more on target which is leading to much better scoring. Making a few longish par puts and only a couple of 3 putts helped a lot this weekend too.

What a difference a couple of weeks makes. Weird game this golf.

Really looking forward to getting out and playing again ... golf courses in my area were given permission to allow staff to prep for the season (like they haven't been for weeks already I hope this means we'll be able to get out in another week or two. The plus side is that my home course isn't allowing any power carts and push carts are allowed if you bring your own. A lot of the members at my club are seniors (or entitled lazy assfaces) and a lot of them are complaining that they won't play until power carts are allowed. Perfect ... more tee times and more space for me and my carry bag

Rumor is courses in MA may be opening soon. RI is still RI residents only, so 98% of the people I know have been playing, since I work and play mostly IN RI.

But once MA opens, I'm grabbing sticks and heading to Pinehills on the Cape, work be damned.

Playing this Friday (probably Sat or Sun too) at the longer exec. I don't care how slow it is, I am ready to be outside playing for as long as I can.

I am not ready to spend money on a full 18 since I am going to suck for a while. My local full course is open but the range is closed "for maintenance". Unless they are disinfecting the range balls, I'll pass on the range for a while.

MA is open effective immediately. With certain restrictions of course. To anyone.

RI is still RI Residents only.

The local range opened, so I hit a bucket off the grass. Temperature checks and mask required to enter, but once you are inside, you only need the mask if you are close to other people. I could not hit very well as expected but it was mainly my irons. The chipping area was pristine and since I have mostly been practicing chipping in my backyard, I had a blast chipping. It just reopened Monday, so I am going to practice as much as I can there before the word gets out.

They allowing you to book foursomes at least? New Jersey only allowing twosomes and 4 tee times per hour is making getting a time that isn't 4pm brutal.

The temp check thing is interesting. My wife works in a hospital here in Scottsdale. They are taking checks on everyone entering the building.

It's 107* here. The parking lot/garage is a quarter mile from the entrance. They aren't taking internal temps, they are just using a thermal scanner. You can't enter the building if you're over 100*…. EVERYONE is over 100* lol. My wife was 102.5 yesterday. So she had to hangout for 5-10 minutes until her temp. cooled to her 'actual' temp which was normal...

So that could be interesting at a golf course if it's sunny and warm.

I thought about that too and will keep it in mind as things warm up. Today's tee time is 8:30 today, so still really cool. I am up earlier than usual to hit a small bucket before playing with my neighbor. I was shooting low 70s on this exec course and am hoping to be in the low-mid 80s.

Played surprisingly well after knocking off some of the rust and taking a mulligan here and there. I got a ton of chipping and putting practice since I showed up early and the executive course was in great condition. I managed to only get two triples, two doubles and and four pars. All the rest were bogeys, but my tempo took a while to find and then my irons and hybrids heated up on the back 9. At the turn, I started playing a full club higher after coming up short on most of the front 9. I've played this place so many times I pretty much know what club to play on each hole so it was weird (but not surprising) being so short all day. I played with my neighbor as a double and we distanced ourselves accordingly walking. It felt so good to be back out there and was less stressful than going to the grocery store.

I am really glad I bought the Planemate and SKLZ whip trainer but wish I had used them more over the last week. However, super hyped on the online chipping lesson. I started using the lower bump and run with the 50 and PW versus going to the 54/58 all the time. The results were better than I thought. Great to have some new shots when I need them.

Played Poquoy Brook. Mistake. They are still in early spring mode, and haven't been using the time off wisely. Aeration is just healing, still furry and bumpy greens.

While I'm happy with the 85, should have been much lower with 6 three putts. Need to get on in regulation more. Had a bird, also had 3 other pars that were an inch or so short from the bird. Drives started getting better though the round along with the ball striking.

And that includes the left off the tee into water on the 1st hole. So, if you said left, pay yourself.

Oh hi, newbie here.

With some of the courses/ranges opening up, I'd like to take this summer to get more into the sport and purchase my own set of clubs. Have only played a round or two each year in the past, with either renting/borrowing clubs.

So... buy used off FB/Craig's List? Get some beginner set off Amazon? Brands to look for / avoid? Bueller?

Have any buddies that have a spare set you could use them possibly buy if you like? I would definitely buy used either way. Start with some game improvement style cavity backs like a Titleist AP1 or Callaway Apex. Golf is really hard because there are so many different types of clubs. Start with something cheap and just play for awhile. johhnyb just went down this rabbit hole and may be able to help you out based on his experiences.

Whatever you do just try and have fun. It's a very tough game. Although, once you're hooked you're hooked for life.

Post up some sets you're thinking about here and the guys will help out. We've got everywhere from scratch to 25 handicaps in here.

Good luck!!

Headed out in a bit to play the executive course in Newport with some hacker buddies!!

If just want your own set to start. I would get something oversized, with a cavity back, newer-ish grips and regular flex shafts. That, or Costco sells a nice set of Callaway clubs for $500 (with a nice putter) which for the money, you can't go wrong and will keep you happy. I would pretty much say get that instead of piecing something together but it's your call.

Callaway Edge: https://www.costco.com/golf-clubs.html

You really don't need anything more than a 6-iron for now as 5, 4 and 3 or lower lofted irons are very difficult to hit well. Hybrids have replaced those irons for all beginners and most intermediate players.

You can easily put together a bag on eBay/Craigslist but try to stick to brand names for the sake of resale or trade-in value.

For balls, I started buying refurbished from eBay. Look for AAA or AAAA with a soft cover (I play Titleist DT TruSoft or TruFeels). Go with AAA for about 65 cents a ball since you are 100% going to lose them. I am about to re-up on balls soon since I put 5 in two different ponds on Saturday.

Everyone here has been super helpful since I got the bug about a year ago. I started taking lessons over the winter and they helped more than any club. However, I also got fitted for irons which did improve my game as far as the clubs working with my swing speed and tempo.

It's a really fun and challenging game that you just have to stick with and practice to maintain skill with. I am off to the range in a few to work on knocking more rust off and get my swing speed and improve my contact. It's amazing what two months can do to your score.

Took a lesson Saturday. Been working with the same guy for the past year or so and he just converted his 2 car garage into a sweet trackman studio for the winter months and rainy days. Was blocking a lot of shots left. Was leaving the face open a few degrees so we got that figured out and put some time in with the driver.

Played yesterday and hit the driver great on the front but forgot how to hit short wedge shots and shot 46. Everything started coming together on the back and shot 3 over 38. Hoping to work half day Friday and getting out.

San Clemente is open for walking only. Like $40 on weekends I think but that is a long course. Going to walk my first full 18 this Friday and see how it goes. Gonna be a good time seeing some friends I haven't seen in months. Gonna play it as safe as we can with everything.

What were his main points to help you? Just wondering. I was intentionally trying to pull shots to keep from fading/slicing today. It's been nice that the most recent/good swing thoughts and tips have been what I've worked on this week. Actually hit my 5 iron pretty well and 3 wood off the deck was going long. Still loving the mini driver.

Ended up being more a mental thing as opposed to actual mechanics. I never had a problem of missing left. When we saw it in slow motion it was more me getting a little lazy. I was keeping it closed until right before contact and then the finish of my swing was crap.

He's all about having a swing thought with each shot. Before each shot I remind myself close the face and strong finish. Still hung a few out left during the round but it was a big improvement.
