2006 Impreza Swap
I am a noob. I have a 2006 Impreza Wagon N/a that belonged to my late little brother. I've been wanting to do an engine swap for him. My step dad is a mechanic and me and him are gonna be doing the work on it.
I found a 2004 forester XT as a donor that has a couple STI mods already done to it. Would this engine and other parts work in a swap? They are both the 2.5s. Any help would be appreciated.

If you buy the entire Forester, you may have everything you need. The easy way is to pull all the stuff out of the Forester and put it into the Impreza. This includes the ECU and harness and crossmember and exhaust. The exhaust would likely need some merging or modification but any exhaust shop should be able to do this.

Would I need a new tranny? As the Impreza is a stock manual 5 speed and the forester is a 5 speed automatic?

You can use the stock 5mt in the impreza. Just know it might not hold up with the increased power levels forever. From what I remember you leave the Forester TCU plugged in and maybe do some wiring stuff with the speed sensor or neutral safety switch. I know that people on RS25 would do wrx swaps but keep the RS transmission. Probably not as ideal as swapping in a wrx transmission but do what you gotta do. Just know you might be swapping out the transmission later when it breaks. Also keep in mind the hydraulic vs cable vs push/pull types of transmissions. But the RS transmission will bolt right up to the Forester engine.
Look into seeing if iWire provides a wiring harness for this swap. It will make your life a lot easier. |

I’ve got an 06 Impreza sedan swapped via an 06 wrx wagon for reasons similar to yours, totally worth it man. It’s hard to tell exactly what you'd need because i pretty much swapped everything, and I’m not sure what things will carry over from the forester,
There’s a write up of a swap on here from someone that listed everything he needed to buy to make it happen. Maybe for the right price you could find a donor 06-07 wrx or Sti, hope this helps! |
