Default Tour de France: Le thread

Today's stage had been talked about since the 2018 route was announced and stage 9 did not disappoint!

I know the riders hated it but that was probably the most thrilling stage of the race I've witnessed in over a decade of viewing. It had everything pro cycling has to offer, tears of victory, tears of pain, and everything in between.

BMC won the battle with Van Avermaet gaining another 30+ seconds on his lead but lost the war with Porte abandoning and Tee Jay losing almost 4 minutes.

That was heartbreaking to see Porte crying on the sidewalk after that fall. That dude had to come back from a career threatening injury last year and to go down before the first cobbles because some idiot spectator got too close to the riders

Roman Bardet's tour is probably over too after multiple flats.

I thought Degenkolb was toast at the end as he waited for the attack to come. That was the most emotion I've seen from a team post race in a long time. He should probably be dead after what happened to him in 2016 and he could barely keep his composure after the race and during the podium ceremony.

Van Avermaet gets to hold the yellow for another day but is almost guaranteed to lose it after tomorrow's rest day.

Tuesday brings the Alps and the real race begins!

I am off all week, so I'll probably catch the coverage this week. Any good places to stream?

Agreed crazy stage today. A little too over the top in my opinion.

I love the mountain stages.

Agreed, there was far too much carnage today than was necessary but it made for great TV.

I had a feeling it was going to be a naners day when Porte went down before the day even really started.

Def put me into the group that thinks cobbles like Paris-Roubaix should be for the spring classic only. You want single day drama, tune into that race.

This just creates a lot of carnage and negativity in the peloton during a 21 day stage race.

I really feel bad for Mr Phinney and co.

Now we have the hills whilst the field is pretty much knackered from one single stage.

Buuuuut the French like to see suffering. So the ASO delivers two times a year. The TdF and Dakar.

As for the tour. At this early juncture you could call it Tour de Sagan or Tour de Carnage. Your choice.

Sky now looks to be in control. So will this be another Sky/Froome cake walk? Methinks this is exactly the opposite of what most want to see.

/mind dump.

Froomey will make up at least 43 seconds on the yellow jersey come Tuesday but he still has some competition between him and getting back in yellow.

At least Tee Jay Van Garderen went ahead and got disappointing his team out of the way today instead of waiting until the mountains to disappear once again.

I was really rooting for that dude in the beginning but it has proven ad nauseum that he's great in a one week race.

When I saw Froome was still allowed to compete, I was out. Dude is a doper with a free pass from the UCI.

You can buy NBC Sports Gold ($40 for a year of most of the UCI-sanctioned cycling races and archives), or check a daily stage thread on reddit.

https://www.nbcsports.com/gold

See here for an example (no stage today; rest day). I've used that tiz-cycling site to watch a couple of Giro stages this year because it wasn't on the NBC cycling pass.

I think you meant to say Richie Porte...

I know everyone says he has bad luck, but when it happens that often, you have to question things. You kinda have to make your own luck.

Those cobblestones yesterday were fierce! Road only 5-6 feet wide at points and 90 degree turns everywhere onto narrow, slippery cobbles. You could see the bikes and bodies getting beat to death constantly on the cobbles. Lots of flats, naturally. They must have came out of each cobble section and thought: "Ahhhhhh,smooooothhhhhh......."

No, I meant TJVG.

There's a reason he was no longer BMC's #1 for the grand tours.

He's a force in the week long events but he just seems to disappear when comes to "put upor shut up" time in the big boy events.

Ido agree on Porte, obviously he wasn't getting back on the bike and riding off from last year's crash but I'm shocked to hear that he abandoned yesterday and has no major injuries from that crash.

I assumed he snapped a clavicle as quickly as they announced. I'm sure that fall hurt but you gotta get back in the saddle and at least give it the old college try.

He'll, Contador made it almost 10k with a broken leg before abandoning a few years ago

Sounds like Porte broke his collarbone, there's no old college try after that.

Team manager said it wasn't broken during yesterday's post race.

Said it was a blessing in disguise as he'll jump straight into Vuelta training before the tour is even over.

Average speeds were up compared to the normal Paris-Roubaix single day race.

I did my best to match up the Camphin-en-Pévèle (4*) cobble section, plus a little context before and after, and it shows around a 2.5 mph (25.4 vs 27.9) difference. Speeds up, dry summer with lots of dust, temps are up, fatigue up--chaos.

Was super fun to watch and read post-race comments from folks.

Kudos to Van Avermaet for not only keeping yellow but gaining time when no one, not even himself, expecting him to hold the lead.

That shot of the final peak of the stage. It looked like those guys were riding off a cliff

Another interesting stage yesterday, with the gravel climbs. Some of the gravel looked like rocks and I am shocked we didn't see more flats. Fun stage to watch. Another fun, short, steep stage today!

I didn't realize that there were so many eliminations on time yesterday.

With Kittel and Cavendish out, Savan needs only make it to Paris to get that green jersey

I'm sure Cavendish is taking it like a man as he always does.

I paid the $49.99 for NBC Gold Sports app.

Can watch ad-free stream, or the NBC feed. Full replays are up within a few hours.

At home, I use the Amazon Firestick. Works great!

Sagan is a stud.
