Compatability
So I have read over the posts here a few times and am still a little confused. I have a 2014. There is a 2013 in a salvage yard not too far from where I live. I can't tell which trim level it is, as it was hit by a train (literally). I went there to check it out. It has the black trim/bezel, whereas mine is the silverish color. Is the color the only difference, or is the wiring different? If it is just a color difference, then I am not too fussed. I just don't want to take the time and pay the money only to find out that the wire pinouts are different. The radio in the car in the salvage year looks identical to mine, if that makes a difference. Can anyone set me straight?

It's just the trim as long as it's the pad that goes on the right side steering wheel spoke. If it's some knob or lever or something it's the wrong thing.

It is the same pad, just different trim. Thanks for your help! I will have to pull it this week and install it, and see how it goes. Now if my car was just pre-wired for heated seats...

I don't think it does. They would have wires not connected to anything at either end. Pretty easy to install some yourself, although I just use a pad that plugs into the cigarette lighter port.

Sadly, it is not pre-wired, like the cruise control is. Funny enough though, there is a fuse in the fuse box marked "Remote control rear view mirrors, Seat heater relay". Neither of which I have, unless that is referring to the side view mirrors. It got my hopes up. Time for an aftermarket mod. I am going to try and use the factory switches though.

I just installed the cruise control in a base 2012 impreza. works as advertised in this how to. The fact that subaru doesn't just include this is ridiculous. Audio Controls do not work on the left hand side and we have the stock radio.

Do any of the new steering wheel audio controls do anything (just not the correct function), or is your radio completely ignoring them? In previous years, the base radios were built to work with the older-style audio controls (that had a mute button but no phone/Bluetooth buttons). The newer-style buttons would not work properly with those radios. But it's possible that your base radio simply wasn't designed to work with SWCs at all. |

In the OP's case here, many of his pictures are hosted on a dropbox account that apparently is now closed. My post here (on the Forester forum) links to several threads that describe disassembling the steering wheel to swap in different buttons). |

I know it's an old thread, but I tried to find some related information and couldn't - namely does the paddle shifters do anything in a base model? I bought a used steering wheel to add cruise control and it had the paddle shifters so I tried them out. They didn't do anything so I took them off. FYI for anybody else that is interested. ISZ

works on 5MT transmissions as well
I have now done this a second time on another used impreza I bought that has a 5 speed MT. In any-case I also wanted to point out that the method I used seemed much simpler to me. There is only one screw that holds the steering wheel cover in place where you put the cruise control unit. I decided that instead of going through the process of removing the whole steering wheel and potentially destroying the clock spring / alignment I would drill a small hole in the back cover where the screw is to remove the front cover. This was much simpler, nothing broke and it took me 15minutes... Yes there is a small whole, but you cant see it and you can only feel it if you really try. In any case I would recommend this method to anyone that doesn't want to mess around with pulling the steering wheel. Oh and you can buy the cruise assembly switches without the audio if your radio doesn't support the switches like my base model doesn't.

Worked on my 2013 Impreza base
Thanks to this thread I successfully got cruise control. Super happy. I found it for 20 bucks. So, 20 bucks for cruise control!!!
I went ahead and took a pic of the metal clip/square hole as a reference. The bottom of the 3 clips in the airbag was easy cause it's straight up. The left and right were hard to find. I gave up and wedged a flashlight in the gap created to find the spot but maybe you can figure it out easily with this pic? The metal wire slides super easy when you can see it... Good luck! You can rent a steering wheel puller at O'Reilly's for free. Last edited by PizzaStork; 06-21-2019 at 04:47 AM. |

2012 Base 5 speed
I just tried replacing my 2012 base 5 speed steering wheel with one from a 2013 automatic w/cc and radio buttons. The install was easy but my car was acting really funky with it in. First start up after install took way too long to actually turn over. When I went to drive it a bit the acceleration felt delayed and then when I stopped it died. From then on it would kill right after turning over if I didn't give it gas right away. Also, pressing the cc button never changed anything on my dash, and the steering wheel button lights never turned on with my other dash lights. I removed the steering wheel and put it back on again to see if some of the connectors were funky but I had the same exact issues. Reinstalled my stock steering wheel and my problems went away. Any ideas as to what the issue is?

Volume Control and CC Follow Up Question
I just bought our first Subaru a week ago ('14 Impreza Base) and I am thankful that a page like this exists. Like many I don't have CC on my Base and want to have it installed but prefer the factory CC to an aftermarket CC. Thanks to this thread this will be possible.
I have read through the thread a couple times in hopes of not having to ask a question that had already been answered. Since I was unable to find it here goes. Can someone verify that by installing CC (83154J3890) that I will not lose the radio controls on the left side of the steering wheel? I would like CC but I don't want to lose the use of another feature as a result. Thank you in advance for any information that can be provided. |

Thank you for the help! I will take a look at your #3 post. I to tried to search the PN I had listed and it didn't come up with anything. The PN I had used was from an Amazon link that someone had previously posted, here is the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...C2ZJ596B&psc=1 I am hoping to get this ordered in the next day or so (whether from Amazon or a Subaru parts dealer) and get it installed. Thank you for your help! I just noticed that the original PN I had typed didn't come up with anything because I had inadvertently added a 9 before the last 0. The PN is 83154FJ380. Follow Up: Thank you for all the help and posting from you who have done this previously, I am happy to say I have successfully installed CC in my '14 Impreza Hatchback. As previously mentioned by other the airbag removal was the most difficult, everything after that was simple. I took a 360 mile round trip the next day and my shin muscle thanked me for having cruise.
Next project is fog lights! Hopefully somebody else has some input on that |

When you shop for LED headlight bulbs, look for those with tiny LED chip mimicking the filament to give you the beam pattern the headlight housing is designed for. Here is the one I just installed a few weeks ago and I am very satisfied. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Q24LVDM/ Noted, do not replace the high beam light bulbs (9005) with LED ones because your Subaru uses a resistor to drop the voltage to dim the high beam to be used as daytime running light (DRL). If you replace them with an LED pair, either your DRL won't light up during the day or it will blast full power high beam onto the oncoming traffic, both of which are not desirable. |

Installed a wheel that had both radio/cruise on my 2013 base Impreza. Radio controls work fine. I see the circular CC light on my dash when I press the "On" button on the CC panel, but the speed won't set when I press the lever down to set the CC. Any thoughts?

Hmmm... I also have a 13 base. When I bought mine(in 2014) it had the radio controls on the wheel already. I had a dealer swap the controls this past October with these that has both radio & CC controls. They did the install and it works flawlessly for me. They didn’t have to do any extra wiring, just unplug, plug and reassemble. I’m going to take a wild guess and suggest one of the wires in the harness may be bad. I’m no expert so I could be way off. Was the wheel used before you got it? |
