Still no news on the Type S price, other than "arrives next spring well-equipped in the low to mid $50,000s" in the release.

Tires are impressive. The 19's are 255/40 R19, and the 20's coming on the Type S are 255/35 R20. Pretty much the same tread width 8.4"/8.5" and rolling diameter for both. Personally, I think the 19s would be better (cheaper than 20s). But, as far as tires go, these are on the "wider" side of the scale.

Things that strike me as odd are the Advance pkg will have a heated steering wheel, HUD Display, also fogs and advance wiper stuff, the Type S won't. I would think the Type S would be like an Advance+ (bigger engine, sportier suspension/tuning, but loaded). Guess they're not planning on that, or it will be optional?

I have a feeling the Type S will be the "performance oriented" model, but you will be able to option all the other stuff.

Nope, big mistake on Acura's part. The Type-S has the same feature set as the A-Spec. You can't get the Advance Package features on it. Maybe in Canada, but not US. Not a good move on Acura's part for a $55,000 car.

I hate the way Acura does packages. There are way too many and they interact too much with the ability to combine interior and exterior colors.

The car already seems dead before it's even got here. I can't seem to find any sedans i like under $50k new. They all seem the same and almost all are auto trannys.

Buying used just never seemed viable at that price range (although the largest parts of depreciation have already happened) mostly because I worry about maintenance cost taking up the majority of money you saved. Just at 60k in my 2015 wrx and i need brakes, rotors, rear strut, spark plugs, fluid changes, etc

Welcome to my world, I was in the same car since 2006 - sporty wagons went away, sporty sedans went away; now the only options are some kind of grand touring sedan with a luxury badge, that carries too much weight and too few pedals. Don't get me wrong my Lexus is a nice place to be, it handles well, but it's like 3,600lbs with a V6, it's "quick" but it needs two more cylinders or to lose a bunch of weight to be "fast" and I'd prefer the latter. Worth noting I liked it better than the current STI though, and I have a bias against auto's, so there's that.

Sedans in general are boring unless it's a special car intentionally made for car guys like the STI/WRX (or go higher up the food chain M-series, RS, etc). So if I was in your shoes and want a MT sedan, I would either wait out for the next gen STI/WRX or just buy the current 2020 STI/WRX and start fresh with the latest improvements.

I'm sure you can pull most of the mod parts off your current WRX and use it on the new. The refresh STI's have some minor changes where I read about cat/axle backs not fitting or something. I would get bored of cars like the TLX/IS after the honeymoon period. I like the new shape of the 2021 IS350 though.. but I'll probably get bored of it so I am going to look at the RC-F.

I think the embargo is lifted on the 28th, so will know more then. Seeing some of the vids floating around, the interior looks nice, love the flat bottom wheel in the ASpec.

I just think the interior could have been just a tad simpler. And by that, I mean like the interior of a volvo or alfa giulia. I just love clean simple approaches to designs. Can't wait to hear the driving reviews.

Performance embargo has been lifted. Starting at 3:55 here for a reason, they're driving the ASpec and not the TypeS yet. Hopefully they get the shifting and spooling a little more synched up, or this could be an issue with sales if thinking 'performance sedan"...

The transmission shift and throttle response delay is outright baffling. Leave it to Honda to bungle this up. Stop re-inventing the wheel. Source the same ZF8 like BMW. Massive massive fail. Design team delivers but drivetrain team screws it up. What a shame. SIGH!!!

BMW, Alfa, ChryCo, Supra, Jaguar, etc... it's a very, very superb unit, and it probably the best thing ChryCo ever did putting ZFs in almost everything.

I concur..biggest gripe with last one tranny sucked. So first and for most that would be job one. So that's exactly what they did. Job one totally ignore the issue, stupid car buying public take it or leave it and that's what I lot of potential buyers did. Hopefully, they will do it now too. ********..It's not type S Avanti..who **** cares

First Reviews Of 2021 Acura TLX Are In, Is It As Competitive As It Needs To Be?

The redesigned 2021 Acura TLX will launch in the United States on September 28 and a handful of publications have had the opportunity to test it.

In the U.S., the range kicks off with the TLX 2.0T that’s available from $37,500 in front-wheel drive form and $39,500 with the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. This meansit is $1,300 more expensive than the base 2020 TLX that came with a V6 engine producing 290 hp. By comparison, the 2021 TLX’s 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder delivers 272 hp and 280 lb-ft (379 Nm) of torque.

The first review comes from TheStraightPipes in Canada and they have mixed things to say about the new TLX with the 2.0-liter turbo-four. The biggest letdown seems to be Acura’s standard 10-speed automatic transmission that is extraordinarily slow to respond when you floor the throttle and expect it to downshift. The reviewers also have some complaints about the handling, claiming that, while it feels capable, it doesn’t inspire confidence.

There are also some complaints relating to the interior, such as the confusing trackpad used to operate the infotainment system. A review from Cars.com also says that the second row lacks headroom and legroom.

Of course, the real make or break for the TLX could be the flagship Type S model. This variant won’t arrive until next spring, but has a lot of potential thanks to its 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that produces 355 hp and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm), funneled through a 10-speed auto to the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. However, we’ll have to wait a little longer to get the chance to review that model.

Baffling isn't it? They benchmark the competition and decide yeah we are gonna screw this up too. I saw videos of the lack of headroom and leg room in the back. I am so freakin' amused by this execution.

Type S isn't going to do anything if the revenue generating models just sit on dealer lots like the RL aka RLX. It's not bad enough they priced out of the range. I sense incentives coming in less than 12 months.

That’s a good looking car. It’s a shame they spend millions of dollars designing a new release and then drop the ball on something as simple as transmission tuning. The Powertrain people worked on that unit, so it’s not like doing it well is any more expensive than what they did.

Reminds me of the conversation at the time about the Kizashi. Spending millions or billions to develop a savior sedan when it really didn't matter because there was so much more wrong with it than there was right with it.

Acura has 9 lives. And the Honda Accord. Suzuki did not. Such a futile game, creating a do everything for everyone super premium sedan when the Germans are continually pumping out impossible targets to hit and reliability is about the same.

It's an ordinary looking sports sedan on the exterior besides the splitter which looked good from the top to bottom viewing angle, but it's not anything new I've seen.

I like the splash-outward like front grill design from the emblem (haven't seen anything like that before on a car at least) and the interior looks nice.

Besides the front grill, I did not feel anything..

SH-AWD turbo four cracks 4,000lbs (3,927-4,028 based on trim); I can only imagine how heavy the TTV6 Type S will be (as this was the only potentially desirable model for me).

-heavy
-bad transmission logic and/or performance
-questionable handling characteristics
-back seat space concerns (varies based on reviewer)

As a "sports luxury sedan" it's a swing and a miss in my book, unless the Type S magically loses weight and Acura figures out the transmission and suspension.

related/unrelated - peeved that Acura shows the Type S drifting in the ad for it; you can't initiate a drift with an E-parking brake, and SH-AWD certainly won't oversteer, especially not with the amount of theater shown in the ad.

The Type S will likely weigh in the range of 4200 lbs or more depending on the size of brakes and wheels they use. I'm not sure 350 hp is going to be enough power to make that car anything more than quick. Shame about the transmission though. That Straight Pipes video showing full second delays between shifting is the worst I have seen from any late model automatic. I would hope that the Type S will feature better programming but Honda's track record with automatic transmissions has always been spotty so no surprise.

Unfortunately, the ZF8 only works with longitudinally mounted engines.
The ZF9 (9HP48) works for transverse engines and that's the tranny Acura had been using in the TLX since 2015 ... and seems like people didn't like it too much either.
Honda/Acura just needs to bite the bullet and improve their in-house 10-speed.

Interesting tidbit, the ZF 9HP48 is rated for 480 N.m which translates to exactly 354 ft.lb.
Acura max torque for that new TLX is also, exactly, 354 ft.lbs.
I don't think it's a coincidence ; I think that new TLX engine was initially supposed to be paired with the ZF9; then plans changed along the way and the in-house 10-speed was shoved in there.

Thanks neg_matnik was not aware of that fact about the ZF8. Can't stand the dumb arse transverse design. Honda never steps up to the ball game. At this rate I might have to look at a Certified Gensis G70 in manual trim.

For sure the Hyundai/Genesis longitudinal 8-speed is better than the 10-speed in the Acura.
Acura needs to sort out that 10-speed fast; also they need to think about increasing its torque capacity, if they can.

I sincerely hope you can find one given there were supposedly around 100 sold stateside. That's insane. I own a 3.3 but obviously had to go with an auto, it's my first auto and first sedan ever...and probably last. Hatches, longroofs, liftbacks, etc. are the way to go. Obviously knew this in advance but the trunk holds a single tire, 2 in the back seat, and 1 in the passenger seat. Not exactly a flexible space!

I got another one too, Brakes Honda's always have lousy brakes, feel, components, and dead last when rags test them back to back. Just like Motor Trend did in this latest review on the Track.
You would think after 25 years of bad brake reviews Someone in Honda would address this issue. Other Manufacturers seem have no trouble providing top notch brakes. Plus, it falls under safety and supposedly people researching and buying new cars rate safety high on their priority list.

2021 Acura TLX Track Test Review: Not a Numbers Car

Acura TLX Full Overview

Appreciate the 2021 Acura TLX for its many strengths, but don't dwell too much on the numbers. Because after spending some time with Acura's sporty-looking new premium sedan, we see its value, even if not much of it shows up on the track.

The TLX makes a good first impression-it's priced closer to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, but its wheelbase and length put it much closer to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. That makes it a bit of a tweener in our book. Does it deliver on its message?

Some of our test team found the TLX's handling splendid, but others felt the racy sheet metal was writing checks that its chassis couldn't cash.

Cars competing in the compact luxury sport sedan price category are asked to meet a near-impossible challenge: deliver sporty dynamics, feel more premium than your neighbor's Camry, not ride too harshly, and accelerate reasonably quickly. Then again, considering the TLX's dimensions, it appears Acura is playing Cadillac's game, delivering a larger car than the competition, and perhaps hoping for consumer consideration across two segments.

2021 Acura TLX 2.0T: Power in Numbers

On paper, it looks like the 2021 TLX has seriously upped its game. With a 272-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making far more power than the outgoing car's 206-hp base engine, buyers are clearly getting a serious upgrade. Although we found the sound of the engine too guttural in our First Drive review, I kind of like it. Maybe it's the year I spent with a 2019 RDX, which used the same engine. Regardless, the TLX was outperformed at the track.

Acceleration to 60 mph took 7.0 seconds for our intensely blue TLX A-Spec all-wheel-drive test car, which is off the pace of a rear-drive Genesis G70 2.0T (6.2 seconds), all-wheel-drive Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0T (5.2 seconds), and all-wheel-drive BMW 330i (5.5 seconds). Moving up a segment in size, our rear-drive 2017 BMW 530i long-term car reached 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. The truth is that many drivers will find the TLX's acceleration perfectly adequate. The issue comes when you know others are quicker in a class with many options.

The same is true with 60-0 mph braking. The Acura came to a stop in 127 feet, well off the performance of the G70 (106 feet), 330i (114 feet), and 530i (103 feet), but about even with the Giulia (130 feet). Better brakes might help, but as associate road test editor Erick Ayapana suggested, a tire upgrade might, too. Models with all-wheel drive and 19-inch wheels ride on 255-mm wide Michelin Primacy all-season tires. Testing director Kim Reynolds echoed Ayapana's comment: "I just wish it had a little more grip and brakes to take this up a notch."

Such an upgrade might have benefitted the TLX A-Spec's performance on the figure-eight course, a MotorTrend test that evaluates braking, cornering, acceleration, and the transitions in between. As it is, our test car completed the course in 26.9 seconds at an average 0.64 g. That's a tad off the all-wheel-drive Giulia and 330i (26.7 and 26.6 seconds, respectively, both at 0.66 g average), 530i (25.9 seconds at 0.69 g average), and rear-drive G70 (25.2 seconds at 0.72 g average).

On the street, the TLX 2.0T continues to feel like a car with potential. A couple of editors who drove our Southern California test car wished the 10-speed automatic transmission was more responsive. Reynolds described the A-Spec's ride as "firm but not harsh." He also noted a delightfully quick turn-in quality to the steering.

We hope future TLXs are more efficient. The 2021 TLX in front-drive form returns 22/31 mpg city/highway (or 30 mpg as an A-Spec model), while all-wheel-drive models are good for 21/29 mpg. That's off the pace of the 2021 Giulia (23-24/31-33 mpg), 2021 330i (25-26/34-36 mpg), and 2020 530i (24-25/31-33), but in line with the less efficient G70 (20-22/27-30 mpg). If your eyes glazed over at the sight of all those numbers, here's another way to think about it: Because these cars all have about the same size fuel tank, you'll stop for gas slightly more often in the Acura and Genesis than you will in the Alfa Romeo and BMWs.

2021 Acura TLX 2.0T: The Inside Story

The rest of the package impresses, so long as you don't take passengers; the rear seat is cozy if you are an optimist, tight if you are a pessimist. Those in front are faced with an interior design that could only come from Acura. A silver drive-mode disc sits at the center of the dash, below a 10.2-inch infotainment screen that's controlled by a dual-action touchpad. Better than the touchpad offered on some Lexus cars, the Acura version takes some time to learn but is decent to use once you master it. Is it better than the touchscreen and scroll-wheel interfaces on other luxury cars? Depends on your personal preference-our staff was split on the love-hate equation. However, we all agreed that the 17-speaker sound system on A-Spec and Advance models is magnificent.

There's a real sense of quality with certain interior details, from the silver start button to the aluminum trim and the A-Spec's thick leather-wrapped steering wheel. Then again, we'd like to see future TLX and RDX models welcome redesigned instrument clusters. One editor found the red backlighting of our A-Spec test car washed out in direct sunlight, while a couple of others are ready to see Acura experiment with a fully digital display.

Maybe all this talk of screens and touchpads makes you want to escape our screen-obsessed world and drive. If so, the Acura might be for you, but the TLX already has a few points we'd like to see improved. Even so, the features-per-dollar value remains an Acura strong point. Except for the Genesis G70 and one or two others, most competitors will cost thousands more when similarly equipped. That can be a game-changer when you enter the real world and start crunching numbers. And while its stopwatch performance can't quite measure up to the competition, pricing may be one number comparison where the TLX really excels.

The TLX Type S was really exciting at the launch, but I had a feeling it would be a disappointment when available.

I think the FWD version would be the one to get. AWD version is too heavy.

In my opinion the TLX looks the best in the Type S trim. The non Type S design looks generic and the side profile appears out of proportion. They move the front wheels forward like a BMW, but also has an overhang like an Impreza .

I wished they just make an appealing FWD sports sedan, then try to make a FWD look like a RWD. The Accord Sport does it better in my opinion as the four door Type R.

0-60 in 7 seconds? With less than 100 more hp and a couple 100 extra pounds, i cant see the type-s cracking the 6 second mark. Sad.
