2000 2.5RS wrx swap/ej257/ turning into track car
Gonna make a thread here documenting what i do to the car.
rs25.com is very dead these days, this place seems more alive still. ONTO THE STORY: bought it 8 years ago after having to sell my 08 wrx. it came with sti seats, i overpaid, bought it from a kid who withheld info about it, yadda yadda yadda couple years later replaced all struts/springs with kyb struts and h&r springs. in 2017 i graduated college and got a good job and decided i wanted to swap it with a turbo since i missed having a turbo. 2018 i found a wrecked wrx about 2 hours away. picked up engine and harness and that started the headache! 2.5 MOTOR IS OUT NEW(to me) motor waiting to go in

UNSURE WHY PICS ARENT POSTING.... COULD SOMEONE HELP ME OUT WITH THAT?
the swap took a few months.... like 4-5 i did everything myself, with lots of searching and youtube videos. I did the ecu merge myself (while reading braydens post a million times) took my time and printed out all the ecu pinouts, labeled wires made sure i knew what to do before i started cutting wires. RS HARNESS FUEL PUMP CONTROLLER STUFF FINAL PRODUCT, mostly everything has blue tape with label GETTING NEW HARNESS BACK IN |

got the harness in, got the motor in.
i had to buy quite a few parts that was missing from the motor i picked up. -turbo -turbo inlet -stock air box -boost control solenoid got it together, got it started. instantly started seeing white smoke. not a lot but enough to make me concerned tested the coolant to see if it was head gaskets. I asked the girl i got the motor from about the headgaskets and according to her they were never done i did not believe her since there was about 200k miles on the engine. Took it out and started tearing it apart. upon taking it apart one of the bolts that holds the cams in decided to break. LUCKILY there was enough threads sticking out that i could grab it and get it out without damaging the hole/threads took off heads and stuff to inspect surprised to see a killer b pickup and baffle did the headgasket job myself, all new timing belt components/water pump/etc. got it together started it up to find out it was still smoking. a buddy suggested the turbo, sure enough i swapped it and bam no more smoke... a kid sold me a bad turbo claiming it was good SO I UPGRADED vf48 out of a 2015 sti with about 30k miles GR top mount got them in and it was running good... for now |

i bought a tune online that included e-tuning
bought a tactrix, and learned how to use rom raider and ecuflash that was a fun learning experience spent a few weeks doing data logs, emailing back and forth. it was going good, until right after thanksgiving. i was on a drive and i started hearing a noise. it got louder the more i drove. i was 10 miles from home and had to drive it back. this is what it sounded like.... i assumed the worst. i felt all that work i did was for nothing, like i wasted that entire summer building this car for nothing. i debated selling it and getting rid of it. |

Could be a ton of different things. At this point if you want to keep it might as well tear it down and build up with better parts at the weak points (pistons, rods, bearings). Could be something less, but why risk the extra trouble of not knowing what you have? Sorry you have had so much trouble, it comes with the territory when buying high mileage items that have a lot of wear. That said- a 2000 2.5RS with a 2.5l WRX engine is an awesome ride. The real problem is that if you didn't swap the transmission you will have a grenade on your hands. Trust me, I'm on transmission #3, where I finally had one built with PPG gears and a front LSD.
Best of luck with getting things fixed. |

i should have updated sooner!!
SO without digging into it first i just assumed a rod was bent and called it toast. i took this time to order a IAG stage 2.5 block, cuz why not. while waiting for that i took the engine out for the 2nd time in under 3 months. started to disassemble AND FOUND THE TIMING BELT TENSIONER WAS WOBBLY!!!! was this my fault? did i not bleed the air properly? no idea. this is when i learned that gates was outsourcing their pulleys and junk. disappointing anywho i thought i could just buy oem idlers/pulleys/tensioner and call it good. yaaaaaa right. i put it all back together, started it up and bam i hear some bent valve/valves... awesome then i started thinking of where to go with it from here |

this was an exciting one to show up at my door step I disassembled everything off the ej205 labeled everything and took the new block and everything else to a shop in portland in march 2019 heads got ported and cleaned to match the 2.5l and some other junk went on picked the car up in september? and started the break in miles. after 1000 miles i could go back for the power tune. |

while all the engine parts were out/away, the car was still here waiting. i did a few things.
sanded some rusty spots and made it look better made a mount for the extinguisher got rid of the back seat and panels made a deck panel delete thing the passenger rear QP on he inside is a mess, it was previously hit and "fixed" there was a huge hole where the vent thing is/was. so the trunk would always have water/dust/dirt inside it was gross. i cleaned it all up, got rid of the sound deadening, took out the vent and put a cover over it and sealed it up, which i dont have pics of |

i wanted to turn this car into some sort of race car.
in 2019 i watched the rose cup in portland, and i was hooked and wanted to try track racing. This was my first track day on june 18th this year. https://imgur.com/a/KxUHxB8 a little in car footage from the event. this was my first time at ORP let alone on a track. After reviewing some footage i realized i was being very cautious. But i figured thats a first timer thing. Last edited by anthony12052; 09-13-2020 at 09:56 PM. |

that track day was a blast. i shaved time off each session.
by the end of the day i shaved my time down by 35 seconds. To me was a big accomplishment. the 2nd track day i did was with bridge city autosports. and this one included a instructor. this event was at PIR in portland. with a lead follow type setup which was weird. but i still learned a lot. did not focus on time here and focused on proper braking and proper race line/apexing/etc. short video |

on monday 9/28, i have a track day at oregon raceway park.
probably final event for the year. it will be run counter clockwise which is different than my first time a few months ago. should be a fun change. Took front driver fender off to sand down and primer. doing it panel by panel until its all primered. installed some whiteline front endlinks that i got for a deal on ebay. to do's before track day: rotate tires oil change finish fender and install check air filter do tech inspection for track day. |

I really want one of these to make into a track toy as well. OR raceway looks really fun. That track hadn't crossed my radar. Might have to make a trek out there one day.

went to another track day last monday.
northwest autocross association put it together. they ran it counter clockwise, so it felt like a new track on session 4 i hit fuel cut 2 or 3 times coming out of a right hand turn. decided to skip the last 2 sessions and just pack up. now i need to figure out what to do to fix the fuel starvation. ive seen a anti slosh mod on 25rs.com, i might give that a try. |

Another option is a surge tank. I'm looking into options as well. |

I need some opinions on what to do over the winter to the car. i got some items that i have in mind. -better tires *these all seasons are terrible* -oil cooler? -oil pressure gauge -iag AOS -find a way to paint car. probably find some rear end bushings to swap out |

no work has been done.
i did notice oil "vapor" on the outside of the head vent hoses that goes back to the intake and also on the rubber elbow from the top mount to turbo light oily substance... idk doesnt seem normal hopefully buying a IAG AOS this winter to help with that smoke on startup. im home for 2 weeks for quarantine because i was exposed. going to try and start sanding the car. |

got the iag aos a month after i purchased it on black friday.
took a week to do the install (working on it an hour after work each day) what a pain in the ass it is to do on a gc. with the smaller engine bay it makes things very tight in there. i put my arm on a bad spot on the upper coolant reservoir and snapped a nippe off, so i cant even start the car until i get a new one. been reading and doing research on 6 speed swap stuff. |

I have been a fan of toyo 888's for a long time, heat up well but hard to overheat with a hard sidewall. I would also say add the pressure and and temp guage, both are helpfull. Not sure what "small town" your in but if you ever need parts (I have a spare upper coolant tank) or help feel free to pm me, nice to see you tracking that car. |

I live in the dalles. i did a learning event at pir this past summer with bridge city. it was a fun even and learned a lot. it sucks because of covid its a lead follow type setup. yea i def need new tires for this year!! hopefully i can swing something decent instead of the crap all seasons i have now. I am wanting to get it painted before spring but not sure what route to go, theres body work and small rust spots in the quarter panel/trunk area that i dont want to put money into getting fixed. Also i appreciate it but i have a coolant tank showing up Wednesday. got it on ebay from go fast tuner bits/parts. |
