Air condition 2017
My 5 year old 2017 Impreza with about 30K miles appeared to need recharge or other maintenance when first turned back on this June. Now after using for a few hours over a few days the air out seems to be getting cooler. Is this due to operation improving seals etc. due to return to service.

Did they put UV dye in it to see where it was leaking? I got $50 on the accumulator/drier leaking. It seems to be an extremely common problem on Subarus in the past 10 years. Will probably feel better for a while and slowly leak out over somewhere between a few weeks and a year or two depending on the size of the leak.

Thanks, no testing done by anyone. I was considering putting more refrigerant in but haven't. Then I noticed when using a couple days back the air coming out of dash vents had that familiar cool feeling. Out side in mid 80s as I recall. So, I wondered if operation may have done some seal restoration due to operation.
I normally keep a car 10 years or more, traded in a 2004 Forester on Impreza in 2017. Best I recall the 13 year old Forested did not have any major work on air, but think either I or the dealer may have recharged once. For now I'm okay with performance from impreza. |

I've never heard of an AC system getting better on its own like that personally, but I can't say for sure it hasn't. It definitely wouldn't have gained any refrigerant of course, but maybe something mechanical happened. Enjoy it for now and don't worry too much about it unless it gives you further problems I guess.

Thanks, that's the path I'm on. If AC fails I'm not stranded, just hot. : (

Mpg
In case anyone still reading.
I filled gas tank a few days back (OUCH $$$). Then drive usual 11 mile round trips (22rt) with AC on and noticed my computer mpg showed about 31 mpg. Then then next couple days next drove same route with AC off and displayed mpg moved up to 36 mpg. That is cumulative mpg. Suggests AC costing me at least 5 mpg. Looking on web I see that's "not bad", could be 25%. Old as I am I keep learning. Keep a curious mind, my advice. "Growing old ain't for sissies". |
