Most knock sensors are piezoelectric sensors - which mean they generate their own voltage. Basically the motion of vibration causes it to generate a current.

How do they go bad? How does any sensor go bad? Either something inside the sensor physically breaks or there is a problem with the harness.

They are not generally considered repairable, but you never know.

knock sensors are pretty much a wear item

they cannot be repaired

they should be replaced with a new factory part

and this is every easy to do.

Bummer - I guess if the knock sensor is bad the ECM may retard ignition timing so as to avoid possible damage to the motor if there was knock it could not detect.

Result = reduced performance/mileage.

I think this thread is a good resource for the DIYers using NASIOC for reference or answers to questions. The knock sensor is used to detect preignition and/or detonation that cannot be audibly heard by human ears. I think the knock sensors should be replaced every 100k but most don't replace until they fail.
