Yes, u only get paid back the value of the car. And even then, if it happens soon after purchasing (i can't remember if its within the first 6 months or 1 year, whatever that inital depreciation time is) you get actual value, and not what you just paid for the car regardless of if u paid invoice, msrp or msrp +. Working off the info that the minute u drive it off the lot you instantly lose 25%-30% (or whatever) of the value of the care u just purchased. The only way you can avoid recieving less than what you paid is if you purchase Gap Insurance to make up the difference.

This is why it is crazy to pay ANYTHING over MSRP. When you drive off the lot that "market adjustment" vanishes. So you lose the inflated value you paid PLUS the typical depreciation. That's why you have to be an idiot to pay over sticker unless you have $$$ to burn. I went to look at EVO's the other night and they were marked up $10k...I just lauched and walked out. I could afford it, but why would I pay more for an EVO than I paid for my Z06???? This is some nutty stuff, I wish we as consumers would boycott the cars until the dealers stop being pond scum.

God bless canada eh? There is no official pricing on the STI yet in canada (48-52K is what I hear from my source) but I will be getting my STI (if I decide to get one) for MSRP plus they are giving me an excellent trade in and some extra goodies. Here my dealer is super excited at the thought of selling a 50,000 cdn car. I guess it's all supply/demand. I feel bad for you guys. Good luck in your search for an honest dealer, it sucks that they are being snakes about it.

I think it depends on how effluent your neighborhood is. If you're in an area where people can afford to pay a 10k markup on a car, you may be screwed looking for MSRP. If you're in an economically depressed area, getting a car for less than MSRP should be relatively easy.

Metric Subaru in LI, NY has no list. The salesman said the GM is getting their first STi and after that it will be a case of whatever STi's they get for the month goes to the highest bidder. F that. If you can hold out past all the hype, I can guarantee that by August/September you will be able to haggle with these cracker dealers.

I went to a Mitsubishi dealer today to check out the Evo. It had a 3k "Market Adjustment" sticker on it. MSRP was 30k so in total it was 33k. Nice car, but I would never pay MSRP, let alone any market adjustment, same for the STi. You'll be able to save a lot more money on a down payment by waiting for a few months. It will be tough, but in the long run it will benefit you, plus, just think all the mod money you will save!!!

How long, if ever, do you think it will take to get an STI for substantially below MSRP?

While at the dealer today he said that there are other Subaru dealers calling him to sell his STi's, so there must be a many scum dealers wanting to sell way over MSRP. He's not gonna do it, but it was interesting he told me, which backs-up all of the horror stories here.

Thumbs down Troncoli in Atlanta

Ok I went to Troncoli in Atlanta today to see what they knew about the STI and what they would be charging. I got sent to a sales manager since my sales man did not know. I am 35 years old, so I am not some young "punk" kid coming in to ask needless questions. Immediately the sales manager came into the lobby and told me they would need a $1000 non refundable deposit. I mentioned to him that I do not see the need to put a non refundable deposit, since many dealers are not requiring it. He began to get rude with me and told me they are only building 600 of them and you have to order it, and he doesnt want to be stuck with the car. I told him, well first your wrong about how many they are building. And second if only 600 are being built I doubt you will have any problem selling one if I back out of the deal for what ever reason. He continued to be just flat out rude with me. Pissed me off to be honest. I can't believe how unprofessional he MSRP but i was too pissed off at the sales manager to verify this. Very poor experience. I walked out the door and the sales guy wanted my name to see if he could talk to the owner and change things. I told him it was too late. The sales guy killed the sale for you and I will be taking my money elsewhere.

TS&S in my town (Bend, OR) has all their cars marked up two grand. Yes, even their Hyndai Tiburans (sp?). This makes no sense to me at all. I love that dealership, great people, enthusists, and overall nice guys. But 2 grand over msrp on even RS' make me wonder what they are going to charge for their STis.

If people are dumb enough to pay it dealers will mark their cars up. If no one ever bought a car over MSRP there would be no such thing as a "market adjustment." Dealers make a killing at MSRP, they shouldn't be greedy.

Sorry to break it to you guys but dealers can pretty much charge anything they want, and its perfectly legal to do so. Remember when PS2 came out, and how people were buying them up and selling them on Ebay for 2 to 3 times more than they were worth? Is that illegal? No. Is it unethical? In a way, they know they can take advantage of somebody who has there heart set on owning a hot item, and the only way a person whos heart set on one is through there wallet. In a way there pricing out your desire to own one.

Yes, dealer markup does suck, Its all just a part of the salesman game when a highly desired car comes out. Not to rag on anybody that doesnt have a deposit for MSRP, why do you have to have the car right away when the salesman has the upper hand when the car first comes out? The STi isnt going anywhere once its here. Why can't you hold out for 6 to 12 months for the initial burn to fade?

Because I'll have driven all my friends and family (and myself- oop! Too late) insane by then, that's why!!
Heh.
For the past year, I've been itching to either seriously mod my WRX, or if poss, get an STi.
Now that we know what the specs are, I want an STi for sure!!
Why won't I wait?!? Because I've already waited!
That said, while I may be crazy, I'm certainly not gonna pay EVO markups on an STi! (or an EVO)

time for coffee..

another private party to avoid, trying to get ridiculous markups yet not actually adding any value.

I hope SOA prevents him from getting 5 cars at once.

they just showed a spot on 'autoweek' about the lancer and they mentioned about the 'national ban' due to excessive dealer markup.

Default Indiana Markups.....

I have talked to the North side Indy dealer and they are getting 7-8 Sti's and they are marking them up $2500 over MSRP. I happen to know the manager and have bought a car there before and they said they would sell it to me for $1000 over MSRP. The thought of paying over msrp is crazy but its only $1000 and could be worse.
Decsions SUCK !!!

Yeah, O'brien automotive is great aren't they. I went in , and talked to a sales guy here in ft.myers; and he told me that they won't see any actually on the lot until september, and the ones that are coming in june are pre-order only; and i need a $5k deposit.
Also, me and Matt in Fl went to look at the new lancer at o'brien for my g/f and they had it at $39k.. then i went back five days later and it was down to $36.. and the guy tried to tell me that they were only sending 3 to each dealer in the us , and that after they sell the three they have that is all for the year.. I told him it isn't a limited car, he proceeded to argue with me.. and I then told him that if this is a limited car , then Mitsubishi Motors Usa is lying, b/c they quoted that "this is not a limited production, we will produce as many as are needed and sold".. car dealers.. geez.. thought it was supposed to be fun buying a new car ... yeah right

Went to John Howard's in Morgantown WV today. In the past they've been ******** with me and today wasn't much different. They said they never gouge, but their final price will be MSRP + prep + destination + "accesories" (mudflaps, pinstripes, undercoating, floormats ).

The dealer then told me what a limited car the STi is and how it will hold its value for years to come , and how I'll never be able to get an STi for less than MSRP even after the initial rush wears off ...

Looks more and more like I may actually have to wait a month or two for the hype to wear off before buying an STi, if I buy one at all...

Simply put:
Jacksonville Subaru: Claiming to have them for customer pickup within two weeks (by end of april). Taking 3000 dollar deposits today, lock in at 35K. No option to walk with return of deposit if they are not delivered on time or if they are significantly cheaper. Representative claimed to be the "STI rep" at the dealership, and also claimed to have gone on a ride and drive in arizona (debunked by a local dealership rep who conclusively proved that SOA didn't even get that track for the STI).

I bought the first WRX this dealership ever sold, so I went to them first. This is downright dirty, and I don't intend to go back, even though they are THE dealership in florida for STI allocations.

Sales rep named Alan said and I quote "Subaru said we'd be stupid to charge MSRP on these cars, so whatever the market will take."

Browns Subaru, Long Island New York. Initially the salesman(which is actually a really cool guy) promised me MSRP and told me to get a $1000 deposit in the other day. Went down today and had the sales manager tell me that he just went to a meeting with all the Subaru dealers in the "downstate" new york area and they all agreed not to go over a $10,000 markup. He then went on to say that internally at their dealership they are sticking between $5000-$8000. ARE YOU F-ING KIDDING ME?!?! That's just a bunch of horse ***** if you ask me and i hope no one buys a marked up STI even if it's only $1000. What really pisses me off is the fact that the salesman helping me told me they were selling at MSRP the other day. I had $1000 bucks ready to throw at him too. Oh well, their loss.

We should get an online petition on this board of all the people that refuse to pay dealer mark-ups for this car. Anyone sound interested?
