EVO VIII or STI
I apologize if this has been discussed already. I am #1 on list for both an EVO and an STI. Decisions, decisions, which way to jump???? Any thoughts as these are obviously both great cars - and I know it is tricky as no-one has had the chance to drive both.
Also any thoughts as to safety STI v EVO, as this will be a daily car for part highway and lots of country roads. STI has side bags, EVO doesn't; i.e. which is stronger/safer vehicle in the unlikely event of a fender bender???

I don't know about passenger safety, but if you hit a pedestrian, all 2004 WRXs have specially designed windshield wipers that won't injure the person as they're rolling over your hood!

Difficult decision my friend
But one thing that was on my mind was how much damage will the FMIC from the EVO will have & cost if crashed especially when warranty is over |

just those nasty altezza tailights alone on the EVO seems reason enough to get the sti instead

Seriously though, who cares about the tailights or the look for that matter. Let's talk, handling, safety and performance.

IF for no other reason.... get the sti because it has DCCD....
and not just because DCCD is dope... but because it's in there like prego.... because Subaru dares to reignite the sportscar market in the US... because you want a car inspired by a WRC car... not a car that's inspired by another road car. USDM EVO has no ACD or AYC. As far as I'm concerned... those are what make it number one. Without them... it's just another awd saloon with a go fast engine. (Too bad it looks better than the wrx... oh) Last edited by Balls; 03-05-2003 at 12:04 PM. |

you should probably start by comparing the safety ratings of the lancer and impreza. the impreza is ranked very high.

Before the current STi came out with its 300HP/300lb-ft of torque with DCCD, front mechanical diff, rear electromechanical diff, I would have definitely urged you to go with the EVO, since I was under the impression that Subaru would bring the regular watered down STi with the Center Viscous coupler differential etc, to compete with the EVO that came with Active Yaw control, Active Center differential etc.
When I next heard that to compete with this all-out STi, Mitsubishi is bringing over a watered down EVO with a stupid Viscous coupling center differential (NO AYC or ACD) and quite a few of the other things missing, all my confusion disappeared. It was the Active Yaw Control and the Active Center differential that made the EVO what it is, and without those features, this is just a regular AWD car with a lot of power, nothing special. WRX STi all the way !!! This watered down EVO is comparable to the regular WRX (down to its Viscous coupler center differential !!) with a power upgrade, certainly not a worthy competitor to the STi in its current form. Not even close. |

Most people I know who had put a deposit down for an EVO, have now jumped to the Subaru band-wagon. The downgraded specs of the US-spec EVO were a sore disappointment.

i honestly don't understand how people are calling the evo 'watered down'? for under 30k the things great, and it's got about 500 more bells and whistles than the wrx. recaros, brembos, 17" wheels, fmic, 45 more hp and i know i'm leaving some things out.....
honestly it might not be on the same playing field as the sti, but it's hardly a turd, and it's not THAT far off. remember too, when comparing the evo and sti, there is going to be a 2-3k price difference. last i heard the evo is under 30k and the sti is hitting around 32k before dealer rapings. don't get me wrong i'm all about the sti, but everyone is talking about the evo like it's already a has been? |

I agree -- the EVO is no slouch. And I bet for spirited track driving, the EVO will outhandle the STi. The DCCD? How many people will really take advantage of that (without crashing)? I know I'll never touch it for a long long time.
The EVO is a great fun car it looks like. I do like the STi better (mainly for the interior honestly) but I am planning on taking a look at the EVO this weekend. |

Drove an EVO 8 today...
well I have been chatting with a mitsu dealer for quite some time and finally the evo arrived yesterday. It was already sold to the dealer of all people... BUT he did let me take it for a spin and I let him drive my vishnu equipped scooby wagon.
My car is at about 290hp... but honestly didn't feel it after I drove the evo, felt like there was a +40 hp difference in the evo's favor. and the car feels SOOO solid, I peaked under the car and DAMN there are support beams all over the damn place. AND my thoughts are... HOLY CRAP!! The car looks super sharp, and drives super sharp. I have no idea what the STi will be like, but I hope that it is at least equal to the evo's handling. Although, the steering is almost too sensitive on the highway... might get annoying on long tripsl... but you know what... I don't think I would care.... The care looks plain mean... and even below 4k rpm is quite zippy. also, supposedly dsm will be coming out with ralliart upgrades that will be covered under warranty. cmon soa.. step up... As far as the Evo goes, it is definitely no slouch. More than a match for a moderately modded WRX is just about every category. Against the STi? Well, we have to wait and see. TRS |

For spirited track driving, the USDM Evo will do quite well - but the USDM STi is going to romp over it. Better power/weight ratio alone would have done that, but the DCCD-A system will also pour salt into that wound.
As for which car to get - as far as I remember, the STi/WRX has consistantly been rated higher than the Evo/Lancer in safety ratings. The STi has by far the better interior of the two. As far as back-country driving goes, I'd also pick the STi for it's overall comfort/performance ratio. It's likely to get better gas mileage than the Evo, even with the 2.5t, going by the JDM real-world mileage differences. That said, I'd drive both first. The two cars definitely have different personalities, and despite all other factors, one may simply feel more right to you than the other, and that's the one you should get. Cheers, Paul Hansen |

Paul is absolutely right here. Test drive both cars, buy both cars, then decide which one is better, and give the other to ME!

Not that it helps the car perform better but I checked out the interior pictures of the evo and the first thing that came to mind was my friends festiva.... 8 yrs ago. Other than the obvious seats and tachometer in the middle the rest would make me feel like I was getting into a very fast POS, granted I'd probably forget about it the second I turned the key. At least the STi has some civility to it.

I would reccommend you go over to the Bay Area DSM club at Yahoo Forums. One of thier long standing members just took delivery of the EVO. He ONLY had to pay $6K over sticker!!! He talked them down from $10K over.
I think its a great car, but I am not sure $35k +tax & lic., will get my $$. I really think that Mitsu. has made your decision for you!! The bottom line is, we will benifit, as the performance war heats up!! There both fantastic cars, so flip a coin and ENJOY!!! Jerry C |

It's not Mitsu, but the dealers. Same situation as STI. High demand, low supply. There are limited dealers that will sell you an STI at MSRP, just as their are limited dealers that will sell an EVO @ MSRP......

they're taking a market that sold 15k wrx's a year at a much cheaper price and adding 6500 Evo's and 5000ish STi's. I think it's probably a good number. Demand may be high in year 1, though.

If the dealers are not Mitsubishi, then who is??? When you need that thing worked on, you will take it to Mitsubishi (The Dealer) That is one of the biggest problems with owning a Mitsubishi, the vast number of dealers are death on any Mods. They are refered to as "SATAN" on the DSM boards.
I have 3 Subaru dealers within 100 miles of my location, and ALL 3 will sell me an STI at MSRP. I suggest you get out and do a little shopping. I have personal expierience with both DSM and Subaru, and there is no comparison between the two manufacturers. That is why I have owned 4 Subaru's and only 1 DSM. When my Talon TSI/AWD is broke I get out the wrenches, the last place I would take it would be the dealer, and I think you will find that most DSM owners have the same feeling! Dont get me wrong, I think the EVO is probably a great car. But your buying more than a car, you are buying into a company and all of thier policies. Happy Motoring!! Jerry C |
