Yeah, for some reason, my asphalt burning 1997 145hp Acura 2.2CL is in the same insurance category as my 2002 WRX wagon. My S2000 is a few categories higher than both. Go figure.

As far as I know, the only insurance that is required is liability. You don't need collision and comprehensive. At least in Missouri, there even seem to be alternatives to having liability insurance, the rules say that you need one of:
  • Liability Insurance
  • Certificate of Self-Insurance
  • A Surety Bond or Real Estate Bond
  • Cash or Negotiable Securities
For me, having collision insurance makes sense as long as I drive a relatively new car, the loss would be substantial if it gets stolen or totalled. If my car was only worth a few thousand dollars, I would pass on collision and comprehenisve.

Excellent point! I got a quote for my WRX wagon before I plunked down money. I couldn't get an exact number, with the car still being new, but my insurance agent was within $20 of his quote.

Get the number in advance, so that you aren't surprised.

My agent had no idea what the insurance would be on the WRX when I called him. I called him in Jan '01 just before I was sure I wanted the car and went to the dealership. So what I did is get quotes on three other cars just to get an idea. I asked him to quote me on a Audi A4 1.8T quattro, a BMW 325xi, and a '99 eclipse GSX. They are only similar to the WRX in the fact that they are AWD and are foreign. However it did give a good idea of what I would be paying.

The WRX ended up being cheaper than all of them in the end because of the safety features in it.

I would recommend if you're looking for a quote to get one on a regular WRX and an EVO since they will be available before the Sti. That should give one a good idea of the cost.

Im 20 years old, and im a step 13 on my SDIP. I only pay $1335 a year for my REX and the city I live is pretty much in the middle for risk factor.

I just called my insurance company and the quote they gave me for the car is: $1695 annually with $500 deductibles all around.

I'm under 25, married, "perfect" driving record.

I don't think $1700 for a 300hp $30K+ is that bad. Heck, my 4Runner is around $1100 annually.

What's everyone think? I'm not too familiar with insurance rates.

I was griping about my 02 WRX wagon insurance going from $750 a year to $1150 a year, but no more.. I've read about too many people paying over $2k a year. Ouch!

I'm 30, male, single, no accidents or tickets.

Default my insurance for a 97 Z28

Yes... I said a 1997 Z28. I'm a 30yr old, single with home and mcycle insurance with the same company. 1 accident in past 5 years and no tickets. I have paid as much as 3k a year when I first got the car. I pay just over 1k a year on insurance on the car w/ full coverage and 500 deduc. I just recently got my premium statement and found that my car is no longer considered safe by today's standards. (I've lost my vehicle safety discount).
So I would guess the Sti should be less than this by just the fact that the car is newer and safer than a Camaro could ever be.

My roommate has a '91 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin-Turbo. His record is pretty clean. No recent accidents (within the last 3 years) and only one or two minor tickets in the 7 years that I've known him. He's had the Stealth for 3 or 4 years now. He's paying ~$3000/yr on it. He's 25, single, and renting our apartment. He stores the car in winter and drives a '97 Maxima as his "winter beater" Nice winter beater, eh? Kind of a high rate for a 12 year old car, huh? I think he still has it registered in Racine, WI, though, so I'm guessing that's mostly why his rate is so high.

P.S.: I'm paying $1375/6 months right now with Progressive on my WRX and it's my only car. My record isn't so clean, or it would be much lower... I just got a quote from Geico and they told me $2718 / 6 months. :monkey: to Geico and their dumb little gecko! I've heard that company isn't even worth talking to if your record isn't squeaky clean, but I thought I'd try it anyway just to see what they'd say. Their sales guy didn't know what to say when i told them I was paying half that rate with Progressive. He couldn't figure out how they could insure me so "cheap" for the same coverage.

EDIT: P.P.S.: If Progressive comes back to me with a rate much higher than what I'm currently paying, then I will be forced to sell my WRX... Between my car payment and my current insurance payment, this thing is already costing me around $800/mo. No way am I going to spend as much on this car for the next 4+ years as I could spend on a mortgage payment for a house.
