Default Switching to 5w30?

Hello,
I was curious as to how many people on here have made the switch to 5w30?
I heard that the only reason we run 0w20 is just for emissions.
If that’s the case I will immediately switch to 5w30.

Are you a Tribologist? No? Then keep using what you are using. The issue with people and oil and cars is they think that what they buy matters and it don't. I have been using Walmart Supertech full synthetic oil in my car since Nixon was in office. Its the cheapest synthetic oil on earth save a rogue sale somewhere else. And my car is 19 with 320,000 miles with I'm guessing 70 oil changes under the hood in that time.

You changing the weight means you think you are going to see a benefit. You are not. You changing the brand means you think you are going to see a benefit. You are not. I have used some earth shaking oils in my car...oil so rare, I had to order online or go to an industrial lubricants store to purchase. And all I got for my troubles was a lighter wallet. Get the cheap stuff in the weight specified. Sure....if you find a sale on Pennzoil at NAPA for $3/qt and they only have 5w30, knock yourself out and run it for two cases, but there's no logical reason for you to randomly switch weights.

What kind of engine? Isn't 5W 30 specified for the EJ25? (My son's got a 20 STi and it is). I have a couple FBs, a 13 and 19. The 13 had the short block changed at just under 100k miles because of excessive oil consumption, which I find sorta funny because Hyundai specs 3 times the consumption as being normal. Anyways, at about 150k miles, it started with the oil light on at about 4k miles. I always change oil at 5k miles. So switch from 0Water 20 to 5W 30 and guess what? Not a drop consumed in 5k miles. So I am a proponent of upping the viscosity to avoid the EPA consumption. What kind of oil? I'm with Ron on this. I use the "who cares?" oil. Maybe it's Amazon Basic Oil or Pennzoil made from natural gas or Quaker State made from green beans. If it's 50 cents cheaper for a 5 quart jug, I'm buying it.

my EJ25 spec'd 5w-30
I'd use 5w in winter and 10w in summer
don't see much calling for 0w-20

the lighter weights aren't for emissions it's for a slight bump in mileage so manufacturers can meet the CAFE requirements that do less than nothing to increase fuel mileage of the actual cars on the road

0W-20 is the new FA24 spec. If that's what he has, I'd stick with it.

EJ 205.

Likes 5w40 and 5w50 oil.

Does not like light weight oils. 0w20 5w30

Light weight oils results in excessive oil usage

I used to switch between Castrol 5w30 and 10w40 during winter and summer, when I found a shop I trusted the owner told me to switch to Castrol high mileage 5w30 year round. She's got 286,000 Puget Sound miles on her now, and is still going strong. YMMV.

You should stop wondering and run motor oil in your car as your motor oil means near zero to the longevity of the motor unless you do something super dumb like use 80w90 oil in the motor. Respectfully you are overthinking this. If you want to go full retard on this subject go full retard: Engine Oil Analysis. Get a bypass oil filter setup so you can run twin oil filters. Find and use the highest TBN oil with the highest amount of ZDDP and/or use a ZDDP additive.

You running 30 vs 40 oil, as a difference, will represent a six sigma difference over a 100 year period.

Thumbs up

FB20B - 0w20 Synthetic. Can't go wrong with sticking to the specs.

Fortunately, with the F engines, a check oil light simply means your low on oil. Not like the old EJ where it means "your engine is toast".

I have had no issues switching to 5w30 in multiple subarus. The oil consumption is significantly reduced. IMO 0w20 oil is mostly a fuel mileage game by manufactures.
