'03 scoop on an '04 STi is a no go.
I took a little visit to the local dealership to look at the '04 WRX's in order to get an idea of the styling of the STi. Particularly I won't to see if the '03 scoop would be a direct replacement for the '04 scoop. Nope, not evn close. The cut-out in the hood is bigger in both directions. I do, however, assume the cut-out on the '04 WRX is the same as the STi. This is good for those looking to bring the STi scoop down a notch. The '04 WRX scoop seems to have just as big of an opening as the '03 Sti and replica scoops.

Why would you want to reduce the airflow to the IC?

I agree!!
then they will complain about no stereo included, then how they dont like the DCCD, etc etc. if you dont like the looks or features of the car then dont buy it!! No ones putting a gun to head to buy it (I hope not).

Don't be silly. I'm not buying the car for looks, but for performance, why the hell would you care if I decide to remove the wing and change the scoop?
Gonna rant if I change the rims too? |

If looks were priority, I would get an Evo. I don't like the look of the STi and I have never kept that a secret http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ghlight=shaved Anyway, back on topic. Even a stock '03 scoop with a splitter gets air to the TMIC better than an '03 STi scoop alone. Now that the '04 WRX scoop seemingly has about the same size entry as the '03 STi scoop, there should be no problem using the '04 WRX scoop on the '04 STi. It's just a temperary fix for me anyway until I get a FMIC. The '04 WRX scoop will provide all the air necessary and be that much less of a parachute an view obstruction to boot. |

Well, for anyone not satisfied w/ the STi wing, I'll be more than happy to do a direct trunklid swap with you (assuming that the trunklid IS the same), and you can have a stock WRX spoiler while I get the obnoxious big one (and love every minute of having it).

Yeah. I really would like to swap the scoop with a normal WRX also, but will certainly hold off until someone investigates whether this will result in noticeable performance degradation.

Ha! I live in Canada where it gets down to -30f. Think I'll just take the scoop off AND the intercooler.

It makes me chuckle at the thought of people giving others crap about changing the STi. Do you have a car that is modded? Usually, that is what an enthusiast does. Mod their car to their liking. Plus, its somone elses car, why do you car if they alter it?

This happens all the time. Which is why I dislike the whole 'rice' name calling fad, I believe it more to be an attitude as opposed to an appearance, but that is a whole other debate.
When people get like this just say: If you plan on paying for my car and my insurance, I will modify the car to your liking. Until such time, quiet down. Thanks! As much as 3 foot high wings and 6 inch exhaust tips are not pleasing to my eye and others, I just can't understand why people waste their energy stating their dislike for it, or better yet calling names at the individual/making assumptions. If he likes his car pink with flowers painted on the side and 7 tvs in the interior, good for him. He paid for it, let him do what he wants. |

Any hue, I've already found a descent fix for extra 2 holes. I don't think I'll have any problem finding a WRX guy that will swap the hood scoop and spoiler with me. The carpet may or may not be a bit harder get swapped. |

The profile of the hood is completely different too.
The newer car's hood is quite a bit higher. |

About the JDM vs. US innercooler sizes, where did you get that info. I've agreed with most posts I see from you and it seems that a lot of what you say is fact, so I'm not calling you out, just curious about how you know this. As far as the Us STi having more power and smaller innercooler, the US WRX tuners have had little problem creating even more horsepower than the US STi, with more boost (thus more heat), with the even smaller WRX innercooler and smaller WRX scoop. So with the STi having a bigger innercooler than the WRX and the 04 WRX scoope being bigger than the 03 WRX scoop, there will be no problem. And like I said....it's a temporary fix for me. Just FYI for anyone who cares to know. I measured the 03 WRX scoop entry at 1-3/8" peak. The new scoop is 2-1/4" peak. The width on both is the same (~20 inches). That makes for about a 20% larger flow area. Quote:

Ok, maybe I came down too hard with my reasonings, I dont want this thread to turn into a flame war either. Here the pics.... If you compare the side widths of the scoops in the old and new models (the bodyline where the scoop and the hood butt up, the last 2 pictures show this the best) its visually a 2"-3" longer than the old intercooler scoop opening on the hood, you can also see the radius on all 4 corners of the scoop opening are smaller . Also you can tell the countours on the area of the hood where the IC scoop is there visually different also. Last edited by LinuxGuy; 04-24-2003 at 08:32 AM. |
