of course, only BMW so far has HID high beams. I will also swap the D2R 4800k for a set of D2R 5400k for the slight blue/ice white beam. I think anything above 5400 in the HID range makes the light too blue/purple which sucks in lumens output.

Not true, my wife's Saab has HID high beams and they do operate quickly.

It is the same main bulb as the headlights and switching on high beam lifts the auto levelling shutter right up exposing the entire beam pattern!!!

Very fast but also noisy (THUNK!)

I swear I said the STi didn't have HID high beam and someone said it did. I wonder where they got that from, the press releases? (ie is there a typo/error in them?)

Sam showing off with his inside info.

They probably couldn't get high-beam HID's past the Legal Department.

from the press release at http://impreza.subaru.com

"The front fascia features four high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps with smoke tinted lenses and distinctive STi fog light insert covers for a no-nonsense look."

four HID lamps would mean high and low beams, correct?

i sure hope so..

Another factor to consider here is DRL's. That is why I am not sure why the Canadians don't get HID with regular highs to run the DRL's. BMW uses the Angel Eyes for DRL's.

I will be installing a DRL module or a factory one if I can get it on my STi so halogen high beams works for me.

Why do people think high beam is used for DRL?

In any event, my wife's Saab has DRL which is the HID main beam switched on all the time. Same output.

Well, on most cars becuase that is the case... hence the thought reasoning.

For most HID's systems they do not operate well or at all with the reduced voltage so how does the system work on your Saab?

From my rather basic understanding of Saabs and correct me if I am wrong here.... I thought that when the first bi-xenon lights were made commercially available, with a projector module featuring a shutter which rises to reveal the whole lamp on high beam.

However, the bi-xenon headlamp unit still retains halogen bulbs with separate, larger reflectors for the headlight flash function, which in Europ is an important safety feature. That Autobahn thingie and all...

Bi-Xenon systems are rather new to the HID arena and...correct me if I am wrong here the Saab system still uses a halogen bulb for flash to pass???

In any event it is a preference, they can be wired anyway you prefer, low beam, high beam etc. On my Jeep I wired the high beams...when HID's first emerged in the market DRL's had to find a new home due to low wattage.

I dont think enough people would care about HID high beams to justify the added cost. I think most of us are thankful highbeams are available at all. Just put some overwatt Hella bulbs in the highs.

Thats not what they meant. There's so much new information and new equipment even the execs are bound to be confused at times. I looked up these specs on paper. Theres no HID high beam.

Hey....concentrate more on that 300hp 300 lb/ft dude!

High beam is NOT HID, we already saw the pic from the Detroit auto show.

Well, I've never seen any car with high beams as DRL, and it is a frequent complaint of senior citizens which has seemed unfounded to me.

My prior 3 Saabs had DRLs which were effectively "headlights on main beam" and the MY02 Imprezas use a resistor and main beam, not high beam. I've also had many rental cars with DRL, none using high beam/

Correct. And there is no difference in the beam, output or shutter height between DRL and "headlights on". In fact the only difference is that high beam will stay on rather than flash on, and fog lights are available in the "headlights on" mode, as in all previous Saabs. In "DRL" mode (headlights off) the headlights are on main beam (shutter down, level), and foglights are inop, and high beam will flash only, by raising the shutters (CLUNK!).

I recall reading in the Saab owners manual there was no high beam bulb. I could be wrong.

In any event, since the STi headlights are not auto levelling (no shutter) they need a halogen high beam.

Maybe I am just used to my BMW for DRL's as they all use the high beam and also many GM cars with dual beam headlamps(seperate lamps) use the high beam....Impala comes to mind.

Still unsure why the Canadians would not get the HID option...

Anyone?

My Saturn uses the highs as DRLs, but at a lower voltage than normal hi-beam operation. Man, I hate my saturn. I can hardly wait to trade up to the STi. Talk about a change in driving environment...

I believe the WRX uses the low (main) beam, with a resistor.

I'm sure Jon will confirm/deny (I am away from my manuals).
