I’m thinking if the restrictor creates a back pressure though the rack, this might help with the pump whine as right now the fluid flows too quickly to the reservoir.

Well, this weekend was the true test.... Since my last track day (May 24th) when all hell broke lose, I did the following mods:

'15 STi Rack
CSF Racing aluminum radiator/oil cooler kit
Mishimoto sandwitch plate
Whiteline Roll Center Kit
Whiteline 24mm front/rear swaybars
Whiteline front/rear HD Endlinks
Whiteline RSB HD mount kit
Full gauge install (EGT, Oil pressure, Oil Temp, Water Temp, Voltage (considering fuel pressure, but have a tiny battery and I'd like to know the voltage)

The car ran great! I did have some weird steering issues, which I think are still due to my underpowered PS pump. The shuddering was mostly gone except under rapid steering input changes. The most important thing is the car...just...turns... I thought the car was neutral before (mid corner if I got on the gas it would understeer, and if I let off it would start to oversteer), but now... it just turns. It's incredibly neutral and even when I get on the gas it keeps on the same line.

Thanks to everyone in this thread that helped and/or gave some support even when SHTF and I was kinda done working on the car (in the 100+ CA heat). But this weekend made it worth it.

Now on to my next project....brakes, which I now desperately need.

The track is definitely the true test of the car and how all you've done to it makes it handle close to it's limits. It makes you really appreciate all you've done to the car and love the car even more. Glad things worked out for you.

I've gathered that this is an '02 2.5RS that you have had coilovers on but kinda looks like you went back to struts?
What wheels and tires? It's great that it is neutral. You say "track day", but all I can tell is that you have been doing autocross for many years. It being neutral while autocrossing is quite a feat! What is your whole suspension package? I have an '07 I'm preparing, and we might like to know your secrets!

EDITED - Turns out the Heidts fitting I bought had bad threads, got a new one sent out and it went right in.

Having a bit of trouble here...
I purchased a used 2019 STI power steering pump and the Heidts power steering fitting PS-030 but it doesn't want to thread into my power steering pump. Did the threads change on the newer pumps or something? I looked up the part number for the banjo bolt and it shows that they fit 04-20 STI's. Anyone know what the problem could be?

Must have changed? Is it loose, won't go in or wrong thread pitch?
Question: Is the Heidt"s power steering fitting PS-030 steel or aluminum? They don't say.

Hey Kos,

Do the racks after the VA121's (VA130,VA131,VA140 & VB010) have the same leak issues? The Valve Steering Gear Box on the 2015-17 racks is 34113VA001 while the 2018+ is 34113VA031 so there is some sort of change that might be related to the "spool area" you mentioned. I know that the 2018+ changed the OTR and Clamp Gear Box Pinion...

https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho...postcount=1322

...of which the OTR cost difference is negligible where as the Clamp Gear Box Pinion isn't. The Clamp Gear Box Pinion on the 2015-2017 rack is 34166AG030 at $6.30 MSRP and the 2108+ is 34166VA030 at $100.70 MSRP. The 2015-2017 racks are 716.45 MSRP while the 2018+ racks is 999.96 MSRP. I wonder if the Valve Steering Gear Box change along with the stiffer Clamp Gear Box Pinion on the 2018+ racks solved the leaking issue along with increasing the cost of the rack. I was about to buy the VA121 and am now wondering it paying the extra $283.51 MSRP for a 2108+ is worth it to avoid any future leakage problems on my project car.

Hey all,

So I managed to find out some more information from a motorsport friendly dealership about the 2018+ 13:1 rack and pinions. They have a different computer system that shows the exact models these come on so trusting the "what it fits" section in online sources isn't completely 100 percent. The 34110VB010 is for the WRX STI S209 of which they only sell to people that own one. The 34110VA140 is for the WRX STI Type RA of which anyone can buy. The 34110VA131 (supersedes 34110VA130) is for the WRX STi, WRX STi Limited and WRX STi Premium of which anyone can buy. We couldn't find any individual part differences between these three models so they might actually be the same but labelled differently for maintaining a controlled quantity of replacements for the limited production runs of the S209 and Type RA. An important dealer visible quantity exists for each of these which is called UIO (Units In Operation). The 34110VA131 has much larger UIO than the other two therefore it would makes sense to use that one out of all the 2018+ racks in case it has to be replaced down the line even though they all cost the same. I am going to take a chance on the idea that the Subaru fixed the leaky Valve Steering Gear Box on the 2015-2017 models (34113VA001) in the 2018+ plus models (34113VA031) to justify paying the extra $283 USD MSRP in hopes that I will never have an issue with it. I would love to hear from Kos in the future to validate or correct any of this.

I have only sold 2 of the 2018+ STi rack under warranty, but heaps of the 2015-2017, granted we have had many more UIO of the 15-17 models, so we'll have to watch this space and see how it goes on 18+.

FWIW, I would never trust these online parts' site catalogs for drilling down to what you need specifically, as it's just a glimmer of what the actual Subaru Parts Catalog is. Yes, the prices are almost always cheaper online, but you may have to factor in shipping and tax, not to mention you're just ordering off a site, and hoping that site is correct. You're not dealing with a Parts Person to ensure what you're getting is correct (if they're a good parts person ), plus you'll have to ship it back if incorrect, etc, so sometimes it is worth it to pay a little more to work with a local Dealer, as well as building rapport, which could help with pricing in the future

Now that's out of the way, you've done some good research, and are correct in the fact that S209 parts are indeed VIN locked.

I too would like to think that the 18+ rack has "solved the issue," so it might be worth it to buy and try, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Hello Kos,

Thank you for the feedback. I always use this site...

https://parts.subaru.com/

...to get my part numbers from since I find it to be the most accurate. I then take that information to the dealer to order from them. They correct any errors I occasionally have but I find it best to come to them informed instead of having weird convos on the phone about some obscure little thing I am looking for. I have a Frankenstein of a car (1995 L Coupe with full 07 STi swap but using a EG33 instead of a EJ257 along with an 01 RS interior swap and rear mounted radiator) so i've learned to avoid the "whats your VIN". I totally agree with you about ordering locally to avoid any issues and later shipping charges. I just ordered the VA131 and it's being mounted solid in a MooreSport front subframe so I think it will be a good test of the 2108+ for leaks.

I would also like to know the right spacers to use for mounting up the rack to the cross member. I got the two 3/8 spacers that was mentioned, but for some reason it doesn’t really sit right using the factory four bolt bracket.

I figured that just getting the Front Subframe from TSS Fab and using the 15+ Steering Rack option would be better instead of trying to Frankenstein it, plus I get to shave weight and have more rigidity. I'm more worried about the plumbing and have been wondering if anyone has figured out the right combination to putting everything together with no issues.

I'm in process of getting parts for this swap on my 03 WRX sedan.
I've already ordered a TSS Fab subframe, 15 rack, ITR adapters, STI steering column coupler, and a few other items. I think I'm clear on what is needed for this part of the install.
I have decided to order an 08+ pump and 04 bracket as my existing pump has issues at the auto x at times already. Where I'm not clear is what lines/adapters I'll need for this part of the setup.
I assume the low pressure part will be similar, but what are those with the 08+ pump using for the high pressure setup?
Any input is appreciated.

I did this on my 02 wagon a couple years ago. I used two IAG power steering lines. For adapters, I used a Russell 640830, and a 640820 at the rack end. I hope that helps.

I had a Chase Bays kit installed previously with my stock rack. That included an -an adapter for the pump, and also included the tank and fittings for that, so I'm not completely sure what all you might need there if you are using stock stuff.

This does help.
Does the 08+ pump use the same fitting at the stock pump to adapt to AN?

If so I think the IAG line comes with that adapter.

I understand you were talking to Craig, not me. Your info is probably better than what I could give him at this point. I highly recommend getting that MSI adapter to simplify things. I wish I had known about it when doing my install. Thanks for taking the time to put that together!

Does it have what i'm looking for in it. I can try opening it on another computer to see if that fixes my issue."

EDIT:

Okay, my phone opens your doc.
It doesn't indicate what pump you are using, I assume it's the 07? That should be the same fitting for my 03 pump but is the fitting the same for 08+ pump?
IAG doesn't indicate what fittings are included in their kit, I will assume it's the same you have listed and it's using a 6AN line?

What power steering pump are you guys running? I did the conversion for almost a year but feels like my 2005 pump is not strong enough for the 2015 rack
