I need help ASAP on engine replacement
Ok so I'm new to this forum, and to the subie life. I just bought a non turbo 2009 Subaru impreza 2.5i 4 door 5 speed manual. It has a rod knock. So my options are, from what I've found thus far, get the original 2.5i(EJ25) for $1799 or get the 2.0L(EJ20) for $750 because it's a direct fit and $1k cheaper.<not sure how true this is.
So what I need to know, because I'll be swapping it out this weekend, is if the EJ20 is actually a direct fit? And since I'm taking the motor out if changing the clutch kit would be a good idea and would I only have to remove the engine to do so? I need help guys, I'm very mechanically inclined but never worked on a Subaru. PLEASE HELP! ASAP

Where did you get the $750 price?
If you pull the engine, clutch/flywheel and rear main seal while you are in there. |

If the crank is good probably just the rod bearing
Is bad. Would not hurt to take apart. U are going to trash it anyway. May not hurt to try a repair. It is a lot of work And the car would be down for a bit. I would rebuild it basically. New seals, rings, lap valves. The 750 price is a good one. The 2.0 if from my Understanding a stronger engine. If u don't have tooling there is more cost. Bit of a challenge for someone who hasn't done it. Not sure about dohc heads sohc is simple. Best of luck. |

I’ve recently swapped a EJ205 into my 12 WRX and it physically fits. Parts from the old engine including wiring will need to be swapped over. I will say I am currently battling an ECU code for engine timing but it does run and drive. Hopefully you’ll have better luck than myself.
