Well there's that whole $580 million M17/M18 US military contract Sig won so I think they're gonna be just fine.

Was Sig making all that much in Germany? I have a couple of pistols that are marked "frame made in Germany" which would imply that everything else is from somewhere else.

I've put less than 500 rounds through my USP. I don't anticipate needing spare parts anytime soon

I also have spare critical parts for my SCAR 16S. It’s always functioned flawlessly and without complaint, but the F&F issues and functional problems I had with my 17S left me uneasy. Do yourself a favor and shoot that ****ing thing! I love all of my USPs despite their stupid 2x4 grip.

I was in the same boat with the pork sword until I found out about this. The pistol came out last year and they recently added the version with the SBA3 brace. I picked this up about a month ago.

Anyone ever seen a plastic cover for a lower when it's broken down? I found one that snaps on to the upper, which I suppose is the greasier part but I'd like to keep crap from getting into the lower. It's in a bag, so I suppose it's mostly safe from dust and fuzz but even so.

Anyone want my Larue MBT-2S? Installed but never fired, yours for $60 shipped all 50 states?

Personally I use upper covers to keep bolt carriers in place and haven’t worried about the lowers. |

Noob post again, but I hope to help anybody else just getting into the sport. This is essentially a diary post...
So, I swear I picked about the worst time to get into shooting, hah. I've done some on and off shooting with a few friends over the years, and even gone to Nevada for some really fun stuff. A few dozen pistols, full auto's (MP5 was the best) and a few rounds through a .50 BMG were the highlights. A .50 shell cannot hold an oz of alcohol, fyi, despite what some may say. Been to a couple NorCal ranges now. Very different experiences, both good though. First was to the Concord outdoor range, United Sportsmen. On the rifle range, the 50yd target row was closed because of the rains the last few years, and they haven't been able to fix the range. I get it - walking out it definitely waves up and down. The 25yd and 100yd rifle rows were open. Using the Savage Mark II 22lr and junk ammo I dialed in it's funky pinhole sights first at 25, then threw on the (excessive) 3-9x50 scope. At 25yd after a few mags I was almost shooting through the same hole. Sure, 100yd, come geeet some! After a few mags...ooowwww, 100yd, stop it, owww! I could barely keep it on the 9" Shoot-N-C target. Yikes. The wind had picked up a bit, also, and some thunder. Off and on rain all day, I was kind of surprised the range stayed open. Anyway, so for 20 bucks and another 20 bucks in 22lr ammo, I had my first solo range experience and was there for a good 5 hours. I also learned that an intro 22lr rifle, even with a big scope, just doesn't have the legs with junk ammo for good 100yd groups. I've seen the YT videos of competition 50/100yd 22s, and going out to 200 even, but that's apparently not what I was going to be getting. I HAD AN ABSOLUTE BLAST. Getting ready in the morning, and out there, then back home around 5 I think after some late lunch, all in was about $50 bucks. Fantastic for a solo saturday adventure, and I was sore in funky places, to boot. Cleaned my first gun that night, terribly. Just, horribly. Overused everything, it was so messy. I used all the wrong parts from my intro cleaning kit, but finally got it figured out, and saw what I should do differently. Afterwards, I did a lot more research and ordered a bunch more stuff (like the "best gun vise") Last Saturday, June 13, got a buddy and his wife to go shooting. We went to Sacramento Valley Shooting Center, but originally he wanted to go to some BLM "good spot" he knows about. He's a Marine from a military family, so i trust him. Turns out, his wifey would rather do a range, so totally cool. Neither had been shooting for 4 or 5 years, but he and I had been talking about it for a few weeks and he was excited. He cleaned his guns, went through the various boxes of ammo and supplies he had, etc etc. I've learned a lot from him so far. So, I knew he had a 30-06 of some kind, so grabbed a couple boxes of springfield. At least the LGS had that in stock. >< Also coming along is a magnum revolver. I've got the 22lr, but also the Beretta 1301T I haven't shot yet. Sac allowed slugs on the rifle and pistol, but also shotshells on a couple special lanes. Due to COVID and such, I've only been able to find a few 5rd boxes of sabot slugs. 2 3/4 1600 fps 1oz. Big ole boombas. If you're in Northern CA and looking for an ourdoor range, I do suggest the Sac Center. It's way out there, kinda feels like driving to Yosemite. Plan to get there early and finish by 1 or 2 so you can hit up a winery or two on the way home. Make a day of it. Anyway, so the rifle my buddy has is a surplus M1 Garand. It's seen a lot of use, looks like it belongs in a museum. He had several ammo boxes already, but it wouldn't fire, of all things, the "Made in Russia" rounds because they were longer and probably designed for a bolt action? We didn't know. He had ammo from quite a few vendors and got the M1 up and running. BOOM, doesn't quite describe the M1. It's BOOM with a side of somebody grabbing yur junk and pressure all over the place. Even two benches away when I was trying to listen to my Brittany Spears records or doing anything with the Savage 22, the M1 said, NO, eff your eyeballs and this one ear in particular. Also, enjoy brass 8 feet from my ass, bitch. I've seen a few guys firing some other guns that sounded big, and they hardly moved. Modern systems have so much more going for them than that damn M1, hah. I gave it a good go through a whole clip, which my buddies best memory of the whole thing is how the gun "pings" when it spits the empy clip. Yes, it's a cip, not a mag. It pings when the clip releases or hits the ground, I forget. Soldiers would smack the clip against their helmets to get the rounds seated properly. Meanwhile, the buddies wife is happily plinking away on my 22, so all is good. We're being manly on the M1. The innards of that gun were scary; do it wrong, and you definitely lose skin from some fingers. My buddy *STARTED* at 100yd, after not shooting for years, because Marine I'm pretty sure. I unfortunately followed him after 16rd so I don't know how I shot. I do now know, however, how it FELT. I also learned that I have no interest in iron sights at 100yd. Scope please. TOO MUCH It was too much. Geebus, sorry, I thought I wanted a big cal rifle also, but no thanks. Well, not the M1 at least. Lesson learned. What's next? 44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk. I am not kidding. We're doing all the big guns here, lol. It's his grandpas legit from the 70s (think Dirty Harry), complete with a smooth wood short-ish stock, so you better hold on GOD DAMN TIGHT! The grandpa kept the 44mag in reserve when hunting bears and boars. I guess he also had a short barrel rifle of some large cal as well, but it was a long while ago and my bud wasn't sure about that one, but sure about the mag. If you don't kill the boar and it charges, well, you gotta blast it up close. Firing that piece of ridiculousness wasn't pleasant, either. I spent my 6 rounds, and was done. Lesson learned. However, buddy did get the hang of it and end up being able to hit some targets at 25yd even. So don't buy a huge cal rifle for the boom and maybe the same for a handgun. CLICK, CLACK! (semi auto so none of it hah) What's next up? Oh, my 12ga with the slugs! For the record, my buddies wife hasn't fired the M1 OR the Mag, because scary. The shotgun was a pleasant beast. It was rougher than the M1, but new production, and knew what it was about. I wasn't expecting it to be more violent than the M1 though. We only had about 12 rounds of the slugs to use, so it went super fast. I've gone through multiple revisions, and I just can't properly compare the two. The 12ga with the 1600fps slugs was a monster just like the M1, but different, but still both monsters. Buddies wife didn't tough the 12ga slugs either. Grrrr We packed up at the rifle range and moved to their odd middle spot for shotshells. I had a 25rd box 7.5 bird, and she got into that. 25 rounds went FAST, and felt about 1/2 the recoil of the slug. Shotguns aren't all terrible boom, and they range as much as pistols and rifles. Thinking back to the M1 rifle bench, to our left was a dude with his girl and he had two ARs both 22. One was about as pink as you could get it, almost every piece was pink. Bright pink. She used it I think once in a few hours, otherwise watching or on her phone, and he was just going back and forth with each, but only at 25yd. It's just an observation, but, well, it was odd but I bet common. TO THE NOOB, WHICH I AM REMEMBER Go out and shoot! Whereever is closest, just go and shoot. It's really a blast, but I do suggest doing it on your own first or with a trusted friend who's also a shooter. Don't go with your frat bros, or plan to bring 3 kids with you. My lessons learned 1) Bigger may not be better, BUT, that's still up for debate. 2) The same for handguns, really 3) Shotguns really are boombas, damn, but they don't have to take your arm off 4) Good ranges are a gem in CA. I've got an excel sheet for the norcal area if anyone lives nearby and would like to see. 5) Ammo in CA, also, ugh bad timing. Everywhere local is out of 9mm, any secret ammo sources in this dry spell? I am...tired of typing (and editing) Last edited by jsmaze; 06-15-2020 at 06:09 AM. |

I ordered 1k of 9mm S&B from TargetSports and 300rds 9mm S&B from Midway on Friday and received both yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised.
They weren't a bargain but at least I got them. |

If you want accuracy out to 100, I'd recommend a CZ bolt action. I"m consistently shooting 1-1.5" groups at 100 yards with it (on a calm day). If you want tighter than that, the guns go up in price exponentially for the smaller groups. I don't know what you're talking about. Irons are fun. See if you can find someone with a 6" 500 Smith and Wesson revolver. I watched a guy from 10 feet away at about his 3 o'clock position, and the pressure wave was moving my shirt. I owned a Raging Bull .44 mag and sold it after developing a wicked case of tennis elbow after a particularly long range session which involved 250 rounds of high pressure big boy rounds. (Not the sole reason I sold it. It also didn't lock up as tight as I'd like.) I'll buy another .44 mag someday, but learned my lesson to not EVER do that again. I really want a S&W 629 5" no dash. I lust for nice example of one. That and a 686 4" no dash in .357. Last edited by tcs007; 06-18-2020 at 06:55 PM. |

I was shooting a couple of my revolvers at the range one day and a guy came over to check them out. He offered his 500 for me to try and it was a handful...in both size and power (it was with the 8 3/8" long barrel). Fun stuff. I prefer the long barrel with the .357 and .44 but they get heavy after a while. I do find .44 Special to be more pleasant to shoot. Since I don't reload, it can get spendy shooting the .44. I also will shoot 38 Special all day long and it's cheaper than .357 Magnum. Good luck in finding your no dashes! |

So my wife finally agreed to get a personal forearm for home defense, spoke to my gun owner/shooting friend who offered to sell me his Springfield XD 40 Cal pistol and recommends it for a first time owners because size/weight makes it easy for smaller women to use (my wife) as well as features like grip safety and decent stopping power of 40 Cal without having to resort to larger caliber ammo.
Also says it's near mint condition and was basically a gun safe queen with an upgraded firing pin. Opnions? Reasonable suggestion or is he just trying to offload and make a quick buck off me? |

Will he allow her to shoot it at a range to see if she even likes it? I’d make sure to get a gun she is comfortable with operating. |

While there is nothing inherently wrong with an XD or .40 in general, it wouldn't be anyone's first choice. It's not specifically smaller or lighter than other offerings so that negates the 'easy for smaller women to use' statement. A grip safety doesn't really make it any safer than other popular pistols. .40 is fine but 9mm is what everyone keeps coming back to and is cheaper and easier to shoot, especially for those 'smaller women' mentioned earlier. So while I'm sure it's a perfectly nice gun, do some reading, YouTube watching and rental-shooting and then buy something you really want. |

lots of people like the XD. nothing wrong with a 40, though many people find it snappy, and best for a lady to try before buying.

I started my wife with .22 (Ruger MkIII) so as not to put her off on shooting/guns. She loved it and bought one of her own.
Moving on to other guns, she did have a hard time with racking a slide, filling a mag and dealing with additional kick of higher caliber guns. I give her credit as she tried them (9mm, 45acp, .38 Special and .357 Magnum) but she drew the line with the .44 Magnum/Special. That's one reason I suggest a revolver for home defense. |

for a beginner id suggest a 9mm beretta 92 series. slide is easier to rack than most and they are very pleasant to shoot.
