Meh I don't mind reinstalling windows down the line.. If I find a good deal on one before the build is complete I may pick one up but i'm honestly not too concerned with it even though I FULLY understand how good they are and how much it helps..

WIN8 definitely makes the difference between ssd and mechanical less noticeable in terms of boot up. Biggest gains are just accessing programs and games you place on it.

I need computer elitism because 15 seconds is just too long to wait for the machine to boot up.

Better than paying $140-200 for a Win 8 license. With modern SSD tech and low power/sleep capable CPUs, I don't even boot Win 7 more than once a month, oh god what will I do with those 15-20 seconds I'll never get back?

Dunno what HDD you're using but all win7 machines I have ever used take a minute or so till they are usable, even after format.

My $99 license doesn't know what you are talking about. I shut off my computer every day.

Still doesn't get away from the fact win7 startup sucks in comparison.

Why would I boot from a HDD?

If he wants better boot times then he'll get a SSD. Recommending W8 for the sole purpose of booting a little quicker is kind of dumb and a complete waste of money, seeing how a 120GB SSD is $70.

Although if someone wants to PayPal me $20 I could provide them with a never used W8 key to use with a ISO.

I did try different SATA ports, but I only had the one cable.

I exchanged the drive and, on a whim, picked up an extra SATA cable while I was out. I was having the same problems with the new drive, so I tried swapping the cable and that fixed the problem.

REALLY strange to me that Windows and the bios were still seeing the drive, even with the bad cable. I would have considered the cable much earlier in the process if I hadn't detected the drive at all. Oh well. Problems solved.

Teh smart is nowhere to be found, please point me to where I recommended he buy win8?

My win7 comment was there to support the fact he should get an ssd even more.

Not sure where to post this so I'll try here.

I have an external HD from deployment that as you'd expect got whored around. I remember people talking about a virus going around and such.

Anyways, trying to hook it up to my laptop/PC. It shows up under my computer and the space it has filled, etc. But when I open it nothing comes up. When I first plugged it in Windows Defender did give me a notification and I thought it took care of it.

I can search for the files on there using the program "Everything" and open them it seems. Windows search doesn't seem to be working for it. When I first opened it the only thing I could see was "volume system information" Which I've deleted and it hasn't come back yet.

When I scanned it with Windows Defender towards the end it seems like Windows Defender turns off and I get an error that says "Your PC couldn't be scanned you can start the service manually or restart your computer."

Any suggestions? Safe mode then scan it? Doing a quick scan of my PC with the HD unplugged is fine and finds no issues

-Edit looks like a full scan causes the same issue as above and when I first start it gives me that "Preliminary scans found malware"

Windows Defender is fairly worthless, especially if a virus/malware is already on the drive. Defender is Microsoft's® weak attempt at providing an intermediate threat detection to their software, and is by means to be considered a reliable tool for threat removal.

Get Malwarebytes. They have a free version you can try first, and more importantly, it has a "chameleon" mode for installation/detection/removal that bypasses malware anti-removal protections.

* This sounds like Defender is getting "turned off" by one of the infection's security layers. Once a threat has been allowed to write files to the HD, it can continue to write non-executable files ( eg- .dll files) that provide "instructions" for common cleaning programs to do things like;
  • Ignore certain files
  • Terminate the cleaning/removal with an error
  • Replicate certain files after reboot

Speaking of SSDs, I ended up with this little guy for free:

(chapstick added for scale)

Apparently it's a 240GB SSD with an mSATA interface? So first of all, I can't believe how small it is. Second, is there any reason NOT to buy an adapter (they seem to be available) to make this into a SATA drive and somehow install it in my gaming PC?

Newegg has some (refurbished) Logitech stuff on sale, the G930 wireless headset is $54 (with promo code EMCPBHW37)

I didn't buy refurbished but I like my G930.

Well, I'm pretty sure my mobo doesn't have a mini-PCIe slot, so I'd need an adapter anyway. Just don't know if this is something "enterprise" or whatever that would make it unsuitable for a consumer PC.

tempted to buy these even though my G35 hasn't been sold yet. i am a bit worried about them being refurb since i know that the g930 tend to develop some issues over time and these do not have the same warranty.

Thanks for the response I'll give this a try tonight. I thought Security Essentials was all you needed (well Windows Defender now?) but I guess not. But I generally don't have issues with adaware and viruses anyways

As much as I dislike Samsung, I'm really tempted to get one of these, 1TB 840 Evo for $380, for $365 even though I really just want a 500GB. Add coupon CSAVENOW for 10% off or CPMXNM15 for $15 off (targetted codes, won't work for everyone)

Why don't you like the Samsung SSDs? I have had really good luck with them. Better than the Crucial.

I have an OCZ SSD (3 years old or so) and a Samsung 840 EVO. Both have been great. Granted the Samsung I've only had for a few months
