Has anybody been successful at replacing a laptop video card with (potentially) a different card? I was going to just get a new laptop but then one of my dogs busted his ACL and now my extra cash that was going to a laptop is going to fix his leg...

Most laptop manufacturers build a white list into the bios or somewhere. It's a list that must agree with the hardware installed or the machine won't boot or will lose functionality. On my Lenovo there is a way to edit this list but it's way over my head in term of what I understand and feel conformable fiddling with. Others were easier. The newer the machine the harder to get past it.

-Upgrade RAM to 8GB. -Upgrade GPU to GTX 770 or R9 280X That should hold you over pretty well. I would spend/save the rest for a CPU/Motherboard upgrade. |

Your CPU is pretty decent. If anything, just add more memory. These days, most games are not CPU intensive. |

GTX 770 FTW!
I had the MSi R9-280x (before that I had an MSi 6950 which was awesome) but it developed coil whine/noise so I swapped it for the GTX 770. |

Hello everyone. I've been using my e8500 build for nearly 6 years now. I've been extremely happy with how my build has stood the test of time. I haven't had any equipment failures and it is capable of comfortably doing most of what I need to do. However, I am thinking it is near time to upgrade to something that can more comfortably run ArcGIS, which is a very memory intensive program.
I've built a total of two computers (both years ago), and I am therefore largely uneducated on what parts are out there and what the hierarchies are for different components. Let me first emphasize that I don't need to run [insert current popular game here] at maxed settings with eleventybillion FPS. While I may play some games and do some graphics work, graphics processing is secondary for me. My budget is basically whatever it needs to be to get the job done. I built my e8500 PC using mostly mid-grade parts that I figured offered the best bang for the buck and would still be adequate for years. I believe I succeeded; I'd like to do the same with this build. I have decided to upgrade to dual monitors, which I believe will greatly increase my productivity. I plan on using an SSD for all primary programs, and two 1 TB hard drives in RAID 1 so that I don't lose all my HD pr0n. Please, tear me apart... http://pcpartpicker.com/user/tibug/saved/xgkj4D |

Looks good to me, you could shop around brands here an there and maybe save a few bucks. I would go with a 750w PSU just to future proof a little bit and give some room to add another video card down the road if you choose. And the thermal paste is unneeded. The fractal R4 is an awesome case. Perhaps put in a Hyper 212 CPU cooler to help reduce some noise and cool the cpu better, should offer better cooling at slower fan speeds.

Are the monitors the same brand/model? Else the difference in style/bezle/screen might drive you nuts Is raid1 even useful these days for regular rigs? Ive never used AsRock, but most people here will recommend Asus. Id recommend MSI for the motherboard. If it were me, I would order everything from NewEgg, just because its free shipping and no tax. That kills Amazon for me(tax in MA). |

If he doesn't game much why would he "future proof" with a bigger power supply for running two cards down the line? . 650w is plenty.
Why wouldn't Raid1 be useful? - It's a mirror. |

I've done 3 ASRock builds personally in the last few years and friends are also using ASRock stuff; absolutely no issues.

I plan on giving/selling my old computer to my brother, and I don't really want to reuse my old Apevia POS case. In fact, I'm thinking about putting everything in a new case for him, because I'm so ashamed of the Apevia case. edit: Also, it's a mATX case.
The monitors will be different. I'm going to keep using my old Acer. I think I'll be fine with it as I've used dual monitors of different models before. If I can't handle it, I'll buy a matching one. I have an ASRock motherboard right now, and I've been pretty happy with it. I've never run any drives in RAID before, but I figure it's time to stop leaving my storage security to chance. I've been lucky enough to never have a hard drive fail on my desktop, but I don't want to count on luck. |

There's a write performance hit for RAID 1. You might be better off with an external for backup.

I revised my tentative parts list. I also changed my video card to an EVGA, which is cheaper and got fantastic reviews. Also, it's small. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/tibug/...dbuild_1216243 |

This is basically my final parts list unless you guys have anything to add. The only thing I am unsure about is the case. I decided I don't really need the silence that the Define series adds. The Core series seems to be a better option for me, but I was also considering Rosewill, Cougar, and SilverStone.
edit: IN WIN Dragon Slayer also looks like a good case, and has cable management to speak of. Last edited by tibug; 06-27-2014 at 12:52 PM. |
