Default Attention: Tri-Staters who frequent this forum- aftermarket security is A MUST!!!

It's very dissappointing having to read through the many 'Stolen car threads' here in the Tri-State forum, only to find out that the owner did not take preventative measures against theft. If you own a WRX or STi, please do yourselves and the rest of the insurance-premium-paying public a favor and PURCHASE an aftermarket alarm with warn-away, kill switch, etc. Instead of buying aftermarket bull#$%t to make your car 0.2 secs faster in the quarter mile, buy yourself some peace of mind first.

As the old adage goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

Apparently, here in S. NJ, DE, and SE PA, we are not having the stolen WRX problems you guys are having. Everything I read happens in Central or Northern NJ. Must be something in the water up there. Though, I agree, definitely spend the $$$ to upgrade the anti-theft system.

layered protection, yea its annoying but the more stuff you have the more likely a theif is to walk away.

I use a clutch lock, the club and a fuel cut, and I dont even have a wrx.

I tell every new owner I meet to go and invest in some security, and I'm always surprised when I get the "Are you serious?" response.

The thing is, We have to remind ourselves that not everybody who posts here is a regular, and if they're not around too much, they have no idea how many WRXs are getting stolen. Also, if they joined NASIOC back in the winter months (when thefts slow down because punk-a$$ed thiefs don't come out to play in the snow), they'd have no idea.

Personally, I'm paranoid as hell. I heard a loud exhaust at 3 a.m. last night and I was up and looking out the window in about 2 seconds.

for those that have an AP use the anti-theft maps!!!

Yes you can set the Anti-Theft map as a base map, then change between a realtime staged map and the realtime anti-theft map. You WON'T loose any knock correction or fuel learning and it will make it impossible, other than swapping ECUs or towing, to move your car.

The warn-away feature couldn't be a more helpful option of an aftermarket security system. At least it will announce that your car is going to be a pain-in-the-hiny to steal and might sway 'them' to prey on something else.

I hate to say it but if they want your car they will more than likely get it. I just got done reading NirtoDon's thread. It sucks that there are people out there like that but hey, its life. Gotta deal with it. And the police, if they had the time and money to deal with stolen vehicles I am sure they would deal with it. Here in the real world though there are limitations and not every single car that is stolen can be tracked down before they are crashed or stripped. That is what insurance companies are for. Your only defense is to slap every single gadget and gizmo on your car like the clutch club, club, aftermarket alarm, and ignition or fuel cut switchs like mentioned above. If that does not deter them than you are S.O.L. Throwing thousands of dollars in mods at your ride will not make it invincible, only more attractive to those interested in these types of cars. Everyone is victimized in one way or another at least once in their lives, that is a garantee. What a great world we live in today

That's the kind of ignorance that contributes to the reason why we pay thousands to acquire a 1 year policy instead of hundreds. The basic theft deterrent measures would help more than nothing at all. That is the main reason I started this thread. The [people] involved with the majority of these thefts aren't doing it for profit- they are doing it for joy.

I believe you misunderstood me. You left out my sentence before that, therefore making your ignorance opinion of me almost believable!! The sentence you put in bold print is the "solution" to my previous sentence about the "lack" of police productivity on stolen vehicles. Please don't say things you may not truely believe are true if that is the case. I did not ad to this thread to step on anyone's toes! Just to put my $.02 in just like everyone else. I know plenty of people who have had "aftermarket" alarms and have had their cars stolen. It does not matter, period!! Like I said, the more anti-theft devices you put on your car, the less likely you are going to have problems. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Just as an aside, I'd like to cast my vote for a separate "Yet Another New Jersey WRX theft" sub-forum in the Tri-State forum. Though 90% of the Tri-State posts would probably end up in there

It is true that an aftermarket security system cannot provide 100% protection. But assumptions should never be made based on incomplete information!!! What if those systems were installed poorly or the owners were not properly instructed on their use?

The #1 cause of security system failure is due to a poor installation!

Someone I know purchased a "security system" for their '04 RS from the dealership...and the alarm brain was located directly behind the driver's lower dash panel! I found it in about 5 seconds and I'm sure it would have taken a trained thief even less time. It doesn't matter who you are dealing with, make sure you ask to see proof of certification and/or previous work history!

Nearly all alarm sensors are "multiplexed"...basically meaning that they have two different sensitivity levels. The first is called "warn away" because all it does is tell the alarm brain to sound a short beep of the siren. The second level (which is caused by a more serious disturbance) tells the alarm brain to trigger a full siren. For example, if you stand too close to a car with a field disturbance (a.k.a. "proximity") sensor, it will beep at you. If you try to reach your hand inside the open window, then it will trigger the alarm.

P.S. In case it isn't obvious, I totally agree with Evil. A ounce of protection is worth a lot more than a check from the insurance company (take it from someone who's already been through that).

Um, I'm not arguing for being complacent about anti theft measures, but looking at the breakdowns for coverages/premiums on my policy, comphresensive (which covers theft) is nothing compared to collision/liability premiums (which have nothing to do with theft). Unless I'm missing something, the overwhelming reason we're paying thousands is because people can't seem to stop crashing Imprezas. I'm sure if theft rates are on the rise though, comprehensive premiums will certainly see a hit depending on zip code.

Just an aside, we will shortly be offering a stage 4 to our security systems tailored for the imprezas. Look for it due out in the next few months....

Take into mind that this part of the premium also includes the cost of repairs if you are hit, not just when you hit someone. Seems our cars are costly to repair by insurance standards.

fixed it for you

And these peoples these days, spending $500 on this alarm thing, that has a little digital keychain thing with the pic of your car, and if someone touches your car then it vibrates and shows you where they touched it, bull****, theres no way in hell, i mean i play paintball and travel all around the United States, its not like i can have my car in my garage, and then go to Tampa this weekend for a tournament (which i am) and be 1,000 miles away and have it show where someone is touching my car, its impossible, not to be rude or ignerent but ive never seen so many people, see one thing and think its the greatest, and buy it and waste there money, im more then happy with my stock Subaru Factory Alarm.

these work well, but when set too sensitive they are very annoying. Before I got mine calibrated it would be going off when it rained.

I'll throw another little factor into the mix for those trying to pick apart my useless opinion.....ever think of all of the Jerk Of_s out there in NJ who drive without insurance and get into accidents? NJ is one of the most heavily populated states in this country therefore there is a higher risk for stuff to happen to personal vehicles. That is one of the major causes for "higher premiums". Insurance companies would rather not deal with the hassle so what do they do? Well if they want to stay in NJ they raise the rates b/c they know it is the law to have some form of insurance so what do we have left to do as citizens, nothing but pay what they demand. It is simple. Theft is only one minor part of the whole "high insurance debate" in NJ. We can go on all day about this but the bottm line is, it will never be comletely discussed on an open public forum. There are tons of variables, like an alarm being installed incorrectly for example, but that does not change my first post at all. I am now considering this topic to be one that should not be discussed, along with religion and politics (trying to make light of this thread so don't get your panties in a bunch!---sorry, had to spell it out for some people)
