Post 2001 2.5 RS Sedan Mileage Problem

Hi, everyone. I bought my 2001 2.5 RS Sedan about three weeks now. The mileage seemed to be pretty bad. I had 13MPG for the 1st tank of gas, while I had 14.8 for the second tank. So, is it true that I should give it some time to opearte to get to the usual 23MPG for city?

Yeah, your gas mileage should go up as you break the car in. Mine definitely got a lot better once I passed 5000 miles.

However, driving habits have a lot to do with your city gas mileage. There's a compromise between loafing and lugging the engine all around town (bad for gas mileage) and drag racing from stoplight to stoplight (bad for gas mileage). Try to hit that and you'll come close to your theoretical low 20s mpg.

I believe I calculated it correctly.
For the 1st tank,
From 8 to 215 mile, and 2.5 RS's gas tank is like 15.9 gallon. So, 207/15.9 = 13
For the 2nd tank,
From 215 to 450 -> 235/15.9 = 14.8

This is how I calculated it, did I make a mistake? Please let me know coz this is my first car and I don't know much about cars...

Divide the mileage on your trip odometer by the amount of gallons you pumped in.

RidinLow, thanks for pointing that out... stupid me.

But uh, it's still kinda low...
1st tank,
207/13.737 = 15
2nd tank,
235/13.981 = 16.8

So, I guess the problem is probably just because I haven't driven the car long enough...?

Dude, you're dividing by 15.9, but is that how much gas you pumped in?

Next time you fill up, reset your trip odo...drive til it's down around a 1/4 tank or so, and fill up again. Then divide the mileage on your trip odo by the number of gallons you pumped in.

I keep getting around 20mpg around town, thats with lots of stop and go, and with lots of "fun" miles out in the country . I can't really remember what my car got when new, but a full tank of gas lasts me around 300 miles in town.

Yep. I know the feeling. My RS is a week old and has 1400 miles on it. Around town, I just watch the fuel tank empty. On the highway, I'm getting 400+ per tank which is pretty good. Anyway, let the car get some run in miles and you'll see it improve.
