please answer these questions

#1.) what tire are you offering for review
225/50 16 Yokahama AVS 100
VS. 215/55 16 Kumho Ecsta 712

#2.) what is your geographic location
FL and MA

#3.) what types of driving events if any (i.e. track, AutoX, RallyX)
AutoX

#4.) percent of highway vs. city driving
25% hwy, 5% city, 70% country road

#5.) your review and personal comments
The Yoks are MUCH quieter and have better turn in, and are overall better for daily driving. They do not grab at every groove in road, and perfor. Only O.K. in rain. They took very little to balance and appear to be higher n quality. There appears to be a soft section in sidewall, and a stiffer section = very quiet.

The Kumho are a bit noisy. They are nearly identical in size to the Yoks when mounted on 7" rim. Both tires are taller than stock, but .375 shorter than 205/60 snow tires. They are very sticky, noisy, and grab at nearly every inperfection in road. Very good in Rain. G-tech a little more grip than Yoks, but not even close to an R compound BFG G-force. Wear just as well as Yoks, but don't look as cool. Took too much weigh to balance on stock and aftermarket rim, noticable seam in construction.

The Yoks are my #1 choice for road and fast street on a budget, and are only a couple bucks more than Kumho. My wife doesn't mind driving the WRX now! Much easier to live with = performance.

Both tires = a big improvement than stock. Both require a bit more pressure and neg camber to get even temps/wear. Sidewalls are not at the level of max perf tires or r-compound rubber.

Excellent grip. Greasy when hot. Not enough miles in the wet to offer informed opinion. Very noisy. Not uncomfortable. Set lasts about 12,000 miles.

Excellent grip - at least as good as the Azenis Sport. Quieter the the Azenis. Not uncomfortable. Set lasts about 12,000 miles. Marginally more expensive than the Azenis.

Default Tire Review - Sumitomo HTR

I just finished a day at Buttonwillow race track. It was the Subaru club event set up by Alex.

I have a mostly stock 01 2.5RS, running stock wheels and tire size.

At the moment, I'm running Sumitomo HTR tires. I've had them for a while. Prior to the track time, I had noticed these tires tend to "dance" a little on local roads (socal). The car responds to grooves and such a lot more than my previous tires.

To be fair, I picked them because of price.

At the track, I suppose they performed ok, but when they are hot and at the limit, they don't really grip. I never got the feeling that I was "sticking" to the track. They slide instead, squealing like crazy, and feeling as if you are sliding just a bit. However, the slide is VERY predictable. So, if you don't mind a little slipping, they're ok.

I last had BF Goodrich GeForce T/A KDWS's. I drove those at Seattle International Raceway. Those tires handled much much better, but were $25 a tire more or so.

Just my impressions, it could be that they handled better for someone else, but I won't buy them again.

You're comparing an All-season tire meant for various conditions to a dedicated high performance summer tire? It's not surprising that the high performance summer tire out grips an all-season that is suitable for snow

They kick arse in the snow. I had my 17's on all winter with the sumi's and with the tons of snow we had this year I have yet to find a better deal that the htr's.

Dry grip = good.
Wet grip = mediocre. Quite skatey.
Noise = Just OK: they "roar" on coarse-chip bitumin.
Comfort = Acceptible, but a little hard for my liking.
Responsiveness = Poor steering response (too light and indirect, not enough feedback); OK initial turn-in; quite responsive mid-corner; Directional stability = truly awful, they tramline all over the place after the initial wear-in and it gets worse as they wear. I wouldn't buy these again in a fit.

Below 65mph, these tires are fine and handle the wet well. I've only autox'd once on them, but I'm a newb so I have nothing to compare it too. The hold well enough for an all-season tire.

At highway speeds of 70mph+ they start to vibrate a bit. This seems to be a common problem. I've had them balanced 2 times after the intial balance and it hasn't helped. It's a very slight vibration, but it's there. Also, at highway speeds, the front end feels much too light and there is zero steering effort and no feedback.

Going to use these for winter if I get summer only tread on new wheels. As it is, I wouldn't buy these again, but time will tell.

*******************[UPDATE]***********************

A few days after making this post, the tires stopped vibrating and the floaty feeling at higher speeds went away. Maybe they needed a bit more breakin? I also added a few more psi, which could have helped.

I did 2 autox's on them. One was on a cold, rainy day and they worked really well as I finished 5th overall (my 1st autox). This past Sunday they didn't perform as well in the dry, but that's to be expected of an all-season tire. I finished in the top half this time.

Overall I'm much more happy with them, and would buy them again!

1. Kuhmo Ecsta MX - 225/45/17

2. Chicago IL

3. Many track events

4. 70% highway, 30% city

5. Great tire for the price. Purchased in April 03 and put many miles on them. They held up very well on both high speed and low speed tracks, as well as daily driving. My front 2 tires are really worn down and I will probably replace them with 2 fresh MX's. Two thumbs up.

Default Tire Review: Firestone Firehawk SZ50EP

Hey guys here is are my thoughts on the Firestone Firehawk SZ50EP tire. The size is 225-40-18. Well I did my research months before i made my purchase. Oh also, I am coming from Yokohama AVS ES100, which I thought are good tires. Much bettter than the stock re92s of course. As of today I have racked in about 330 miles so far. Still need to break them in more. But from what I can notice and feel, these are the best tires I have had. Considering this is my second set of high performance tires. I will be comparing these to the Yokohama AVS ES100 (225-40-18).

These tires simply kick the #### out of the AVS ES100. Dont get me wrong tho, the es100s are good tires, but these firehawks are hands down a night and day difference. Steering response in compared to the yokes is much much responsive. The car turns so much better than before. These tires simply stick to the road. No review in the rain, but from what i hear they are good in the rain as well. Driving my car just puts more of a smile on my face than before. Its just amazing how sticky these tires are! Oh and lastly, the treadwear is 340!!! AA wet traction and A for temperature. These tires are sleeper tires that not too many people know about or are scared to try out, these are the tires you should be running if you cant afford s03s, they are cheaper than s03s by 20 or 30 bux. All I have to say is these tires are much much better than the es100s. If you think the yokes are good, you definitely need to try these firestones out!!

#1.) what tire are you offering for review (please include size)

Toyo T1S, 225/50/16 on stock rims, wagon with sedan rear swaybar and solid links (installed prior to tires) Switched from SOA tires. I plan on getting dedicated cold weather tires. I understand from my search that these tires do not perform well in the cold (under 40F).

#2.) what is your geographic location

Midwest

80% highway 20% city

I want a car that is stable and safe at 55-95 mph on long journeys. A lot less understeer on the ramps and curves under WOT. The wider tires really make the car more stable at "excessive" highway speeds, especially around trucks. Much better ability to use the throttle to corner. The car is a little more eager to "thump" over concrete joints and a bit noisier, but not much. I drove some gravel and they responded well. The gravel really helped the new tires bit better. The wider tires give the car a different look..car visually looks "fatter'.The only thing I wished I'd considered is that the wider tires will throw more of the road up on the quarter panels. I will need wider flaps or ? as the mud guards are not wide enough to protect the paint. I went to my local dealer found by using the search engine at Toyo..$131 each balanced and mounted. I ned to play with the tire pressure a bit to see how they respond.

I used these to replace Bridgestone S-03's, so my review is a comparison to those. First, MUCH quieter! I can hear my exhaust again. Much less tramlining - the Eagles are great on groved roads. The ride is also notably softer than S-03's. On Detroit roads, this is a huge deal.

The DS-G3's still have that 'Brain bleeding out through ear' grip. I think I have found my permanent summer tire, depending on wear/treadlife - I am very happy with these.

edit: two summers on these (with ~10 auto-x's total), and they still have tread, enough that I'll run them next summer as well. Still love the ride, noise & grip.

When you see the tread it's hard to believe that they grip as well as they do since it looks like there's about 30% less tread than other performance tires, but these tires grip really well. I'm coming from Falken Azenis (225/45/17 also) and the PS2s don't grip as much, but they are pretty close! However the PSs are quiet and smooth. I also had to drive them through torrential rain the other day and they lose almost nothing in performance even in shallow standing water. On the autocross, I found pumping the pressure up did nothing, they seemed to run best at normal tire pressures. The only complaint I have is that the sidewall has a touch of give (remember I'm coming from Azenis which have practically solid sidewalls!). So the initial transition from straight to turn has a whisper of a delay, however any midturn correction after the tires set is instantaneous and amazing. Comparing these to Azenis is a little unfair, but I'm certain that this is the best tire out there right now that can handle dry, wet, has a life more than 10k miles, and is quiet and smooth.

These tires are nice. i rode on stock before, so they were a HUGE improvement over the RE92's. Quiet, excellent turn in and reduced roll, predictable performance and sick looking tread pattern! So far on highway on-ramps, i have gunned it all the way and it just feels like i have a much much better car. They stick like glue. On a wet surface they work just as well, IMO. From what i hear they last a long time and wear even when applied on a car that has negative camber. Great choice, i am happy my package came with these things!

Thanks for your participation

you're quite welcome.

I had a set of these tires on my previous car (a Camaro Z28) and was very impressed with them. Good road manners, limited road noise and solid grip. They also have excellent wet weather traction and an usual looking tread pattern. On my '04 WRX, going from the stock 16" wheels/tires to 17" 225/45 has greatly improved cornering and steering response.

#5) was in a bind because I had a blowout on one of my RE070, and couldnt afford to wait a week to order and shave a new one (plus the rediculous price) so with much aprehension gave the Nittos a try (I know how bad previous nitto's have done, but the price was right). So far about 500mi I can not believe how good these tires perform, I personally loved the RE070 and rate them close to SO3's, and in comparison find the Neogens as good or better in every catogory I also cant understand how they are an allseason (of course I dont think I'd go near snow with them), they perform exactly like a summer only max perf. Now its only been @ 500 mi so I'll post back how they hold up, but as of now I give them my highest recomendation, for the price they cant be beat, dont be scared off by the Nitto name.

Inexpensive R compound tires that unlike other DOT R comppunds you can actually run on the street with out worrying about them. They are noisy. You sound like a truck with mud terrain tires rolling down the street. Very good grip on the track and the Auto-X course. THey are not the best tires for being competitive in your Class but if you dedicate these tires for only Auto-X you could use them for probably 4 summers worth of Auto-Xing. On the track they are very durable as well, though it is wise to rotate the tires once during the day.

Initially they perform very well in the rain. After teh secondary grooves wear away and you are left with only the "V" shape you need to slow down. THey still handle wet pavement well, but any ammout of standing water is potential for hydroplaning.

I will be buying another set when these are done at the end of this summer.

Choosing a tire for life in Denver and the Front Range is difficult, as one encounters dry pavement, wet pavement, slush, snow, ice, gravel, and mud, sometimes all in the same day. It's like selecting a tire for the Col du Turini. On my 02 WRX (Stage 3, STI suspension, RA gearbox, quick rack, etc.) I have the following "quiver" of tires:

Bridgestone S-03s: good on dry and wet pavement. Fairly scary on even light snow or ice. Understeer is prominent on gravel-- too wide and too little tread to bite. They tramline badly along the troughed pavement of 6th Ave west. The tramlining can scoot you half a lane in an eyeblink if you don't pay attention. Since I commute 40 miles on 6th Ave a day, the tramlining is annoying and I have to admit that my commute is more comfortable when I run the other two tire choices. I haven't tried the S03s on the track. I know there are stickier street/track tires out there. Mileage: I get about 20K miles per set.

Pirelli Winter 210s: these performance snows are actually a pretty good all-around tire for Colorado, if you can live with the lower ultimate dry pavement grip and turn-in than the S03s. Bear in mind, mine are tall and skinny-- 195/65-15-- so a wider, lower profile size would be a better allround tire. They really bite in the snow, yet they are quiet on the highway getting to the snow. I can't justify true snows such as Nokians here because usually the drive to skiing involves 60 miles of dry pavement and then 10 miles of snow over the passes. The Pirellis are good on gravel. Probably would do well in rallycross. Oh, and no tramlining at all on troughed pavement. Mileage: hard to tell. I have three winters on them and I'd guess they are at 50%.

Silverstones: I have always wondered how much gravel grip the rally cars have, so on a lark I ordered a set of Silverstones this summer instead of replacing my worn S03s (at $120/tire instead of $170.) First off, on pavement these tires are very noisy, reminiscent of the retread snows of my youth. The singing on pavement is very obvious 20-50 mph but fortunately the frequency rises and it totally blends with the highway noise at 60 mph+. The good news is no tramlining on 6th Ave. In spite of their very tall profile and open tread, they are actually quite sticky on pavement. Tossing them into hairpin corners and sweepers up Lookout Mountain Road, they are less prone to understeer and squeal than the Pirellis. I don't yet have a sense of their breakawya characteristics on pavement. At first they were slightly disconcerting on the highway in quick lane changes-- the tall sidewalls and tread squirm make for more roll and suspension movement in lane changes than either the SO3s or the Pirellis. This has improved as the tread blocks have worn in a bit. Now for their real strength: on gravel they are quite unbelievable. They feel like they turn in like the SO3s do on tarmac. There is minimal understeer and the car is much easier to rotate. Once in a drift, they are very controllable and very fun. By the way, its too soon to tell how these hard compound tires will wear on pavement, as I only have a couple thousand miles on them. The Silverstones on OZ Gravel rally wheels are near invincible on rough roads and potholes.

Call me nuts, but I'm going to try running the Silverstones this summer, obviously giving up some pavement fun for killer grip on the gravel roads. I am getting used to the low speed tire noise. Kind of like having a dogbox!

The Continentals totally suck. They squeal like a pig on both wet/dry and it is so easy to break loose due to the lack of grip.
Previous tire was Bridgestone Potenza SO1(summer tires) which did really well and no squealing.
The Continentals do not give me any confidence.
They also have a "floaty" feeling and disconnects me from the road.
I cannot recommend these tires at all.

Going to try the Michelin Pilot Sports AS and PS2.

I know comparing a +1 summer tire to an All Season tire is considered tabo, but the Pilot Sport A&S are considered to be very close in terms of overall performance to the Pilot Sport per Tire Rack (comparison).

The Pilot Sport A&S had a rough ride due to the stiff sidewall. Acceptable, but rough. They handled well and were relatively quite. They were extremely responsive to turning and quick lane change, but felt a little unstable at higher speeds and twitchy on the highway.

The ES100s obviously have better grip with the +1 configuration, but also have a much better ride! This was sort of a surprise considering the tire height. The ES100s feel MUCH more stable, though the Pilot Sports are a little quieter. Turn-in/quick turning is not quite as good as the Pilot Sports, though still very acceptable. Have not tried the ES100s in wet yet. Love these tires and glad I upsized. The car feels much more stout with the upsizing and look much better too. Highly recommend them!

Amazing tire, feels the road with incredible cornering ability.
Not able to break and slide the tires as they have a huge amount of traction.
Able to take my fav. corners much faster than the old Bridgestone potenzas.
Have not yet driven in the wet.

Downside is probably short thread life.

The Tauranzas are vastly superior to the stock RE92s in terms of grip, cornering, and wet traction. In the RE92s I had numerous encounters with "the brake problem" in the wet where the brake pedal would go to the floor as the ABS kick in. I have not encountered this with these tires, after 12,000 miles. The stiffer sidewalls mean much quicker cornering without skidding. In light snow (we send the serious stuff to Cleveland) the car handles well, though these are not winter tires. If you can believe the reviews in TireRack these are up there with the Pilot Sport and Pirelli Zero Nero in terms of all around traction and performance.
