Differential seal replacement with engine removed?
Long time reader, first time poster. I recently pulled the engine from my ‘08 2.5i NA and couldn’t have done it without forum communities like NASIOC.
In the process I pulled the driver side axel from the diff to get to bellhousing bolt and nut easier, and I noticed the outer seal is leaking and torn. I know I have to be really careful making sure I turn the housing back in exactly back to where it was, but can I do this with the engine out? Sorry if this should be obvious. Really don’t want to risk detonating the diff or trans.

It's only obvious if you have done a few seals on different years/models over the years...
The differential seals in 2008 install from from outside - no need to remove the bearing retainer. Be observant as to how deep the old seal sits in the retainer - there is no lip or stop and you can drive the seal all the way through the retainer. Also there are left and right side seals - different part numbers - look at the direction of the swirled grooves on the face of the old/new seal for proper direction. Ideally you will want to use Subaru special tool 18675AA000 as the seal is not that easy to seat due to the design of the retainer. Last edited by Elbert Bass; 04-01-2022 at 08:40 AM. |

Thank you! I had seen some people install from the outside but wasn’t sure. I’ll be checking that tool out for sure.

I also forgot - when you reinstall the axle make sure the gap in the circlip on the end of the spline is facing up. This will make pushing the axle back in much easier.
